This study is concerned with technological choice under uncertain demand conditions. It begins with an overview of the California wild rice market. The wild rice product is described, the wild rice industry is review and wild rice market conditions are explored. The overview is followed by a discussion of wild rice processing. Technological choice and competitive strategy issues are reviewed and then a framework for choosing between two competing technologies is proposed. This paper examines the non-oil exports sector in Nigeria which had witnessed a lacklustre performance despite the several statements of government's interest in export-biased growth strategy and the establishment of several export facilitating institutions. The paper further observes that a major problem with Nigeria's non-oil export sector is that it is not predicated on the design and implementation of appropriate and coherent economic policies as there is no clear export promotion blue print in Nigeria. The most recent data available on the structure of the Nigerian ^ economy are those for year 2000, which reflect the current structure and the main features of the economy. Bank Lending Behaviour And Output Growth: An Empirical Analysis With Implication For Monetary Policy Formulation In Nigeria, Joseph O. Nnanna

Preliminary findings from the empirical analysis show that the banking sector has not supported real sector output growth in its lending policy. The combined effects of risk aversion and infrastructural problem in the real sector represent serious constraints on credit flow to the private sector and the sectors declining marginal product of capital. Overall, while the banking sector has indeed, succeeded in deposit mobilization, it has nevertheless, not done a good job in its intermediation functions. The analysis further reveals the presence of policy distortions in the system, and its negative influence on banks' lending behavior. The need to address …

This report indicates that the size of Nigeria s insurance industry shrank in 1999, according to a survey conducted by CBN. The development was sequel to the exit of some insurance companies that could not fulfil the recapitalisation requirement by the National Insurance Commission (NA/COM). However, paid-up capital in the industry increased by 7.1 per cent in 1999, owing to the additional equity capital injected into the joint-venture insurance companies. Aggregate income and expenditure in the industry increased, although expenditure grew faster during the year under review. Most new product adoption models have focused on single-generation products. Only recently have researchers begun to focus on the importance of analyzing consumers' purchase demands in multi-generation products. This paper proposes a model that incorporates both initial and repeat purchases and allows for leap-frogging behavior for multi-generation technological products. Whereas most new product adoption models are based on aggregate market sales, the proposed model is estimated and validated on individual consumer data. Within a logistical modeling framework, the model combines a purchase incidence (buy/not buy) component and generation choice components for each time period. In many high technology industries, strategic alliances have become important for improving a firm's financial performance by providing knowledge that can be used to develop the capabilities needed to introduce new products. This study investigates the construct validity of a Belgian assessment centre through a comprehensive set of confirmatory factor analysis models. In particular, the general confirmatory factor analysis approach as well as the correlated uniqueness approach are fitted to the same data. Results replicate Sagie and Magnezy's (1997) finding that the correlated uniqueness model is appropriate to represent exercise effects in assessment centres, as a good fit and no estimation problems are obtained. In this model the dimensions explain 36% of variance, revealing evidence of convergent validity. Possibly, this is due to the careful design of this assessment centre. Evidence of …

Microfinance institutions aim to reduce poverty. Some assess their impact through a cross-sectional impact methodology which compares veteran to new participants and then calls any difference between these two groups the "impact" of the program. Such studies have risen recently in popularity because they are cheap, easy to implement, and often encouraged by donors. USAID, through its AIMS project, encourages this methodology with its SEEP/AIMS practitioner-oriented tools. This paper intends to inform practitioners about the perils of using such a strategy, and suggests a couple of solutions to some of the larger problems with this approach.
