Evaporative Cooling Availability In Water Based Sensible Cooling Systems, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn Sep 2001

Evaporative Cooling Availability In Water Based Sensible Cooling Systems, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn

Conference Papers

Recent developments have prompted a review of evaporative cooling technology as an effective means of cooling modern deep plan buildings. Prominent among these developments is the success of high temperature sensible cooling systems, such as chilled ceilings, which require a supply of cooling water at 14 to 18°C. Crucial to the success of evaporative cooling technology, as a significant means of cooling in modern applications, is the ability to generate cooling water, in an indirect circuit, at a temperature which closely approaches the ambient adiabatic saturation temperature or wet bulb temperature. Recent research in this area has shown that it …

Local Development And The Creation Of The Enterprise Culture, Corrina Smart

Masters

This thesis sets out to explore how cultural values of enterprise are negotiated between state sponsored bodies and their agents of limited economic, social and cultural capital, within a localised framework. More specifically, this qualitative research study centres the attention on one such government agency, namely the Northside Partnership, and investigates how this agency promotes and creates entrepreneurial activity within its catchment area; an area of high unemployment, social exclusion and marginalisation. A topical area of research, with limited knowledge and previous research opens up various avenues for this research study to explore. Data collection involves the administration of various …

Working Up A Tan, Gerry Mortimer Jan 2001

Working Up A Tan, Gerry Mortimer

Case studies

Ann McLean looked down again at the brochure on her desk. The blue-eyed, white toothed blond, complete with her glowing tan, stared back at her. She opened the small A4 sized brochure and quickly scanned its contents. It was typical ‘Americanese’ and was obviously targeted at the beauty saloons and beauticians. It extolled the virtues of a tanning system called ‘Sunkissed’. She had promised her friend, Susan, that she would at least give her an indication later that week, of whether she was prepared to invest in a project to launch the tanning system in Ireland, and possibly the UK.

The Competence Trap: Exploring Issues In Winning And Sustaining Core Competence, Aidan O'Driscoll, David Carson, Audrey Gilmore

Articles

The organisational struggle to maintain and refine, yet also necessarily to renew and replace core capabilities, is a complex, and at times paradoxical, challenge. This paper reflects on this managerial task and on the difficulties and tensions inhering in its possible resolution. In sum, it asks how can the need to leverage competence for today be balanced with the requirement to build competence for tomorrow?

Facilitators And Inhibitors Of Supply Chain Innovation-Prospects For Supply Chain Managment In The Irish Grocery Sector, Joan Keegan, Edmund O'Callaghan, Mary Wilcox Jan 2001

Facilitators And Inhibitors Of Supply Chain Innovation-Prospects For Supply Chain Managment In The Irish Grocery Sector, Joan Keegan, Edmund O'Callaghan, Mary Wilcox

Articles

Supply chain management is one of the most significant strategic challenges currently facing the Irish grocery sector. The UK grocery market with its emphasis on composite deliveries via regional distribution centres is extremely sophisticated; the Irish grocery sector, however, is in the embryonic stage of implementing central distribution. The potential to develop innovative supply chain systems is mediated by both national logistic-related variables and company characteristics. In addition to competitor activity and market forces, drivers and inhibitors such as economic growth, consumer preferences, the regulatory environment and physical and technological infrastructure influence the evolution of supply chain systems. This paper …

The Strategic Response Of Dublin's Traditional Department Stores To Intensifying Competition, Edmund O'Callaghan, Mary Wilcox

Articles

In Dublin city competition within the retail sector is intensifying and city-centre department stores, in common with other traders, face many challenges. Indigenous retailers must contend not only with each other, but also with an on-going invasion of international retailers who have been attracted by Ireland’s booming economy. UK multiples have made major in-roads into Dublin's retail scene and the city centre's latest shopping mall, The Jervis Centre, is so dominated by UK retailers that it has been christened 'Little Britain' In the past fifty years, many of Dublin's once dominant department stores have succumbed to the vagaries of retailing. …

A System Design Framework For Project Cost Control In The Irish Construction Industry, Tomás Kelly

Masters

The construction industry is a major contributor to the Irish economy. The common denominator of the of the industry’s business is the “construction project”. Construction projects by their very nature are unique being influenced by many variables such as weather, location, design and personnel. This situation demands strong management to fulfil the cost control function. The primary aim of this project has been the illustration of a system design framework for project cost control in the Irish construction industry. This system design should be based upon a general principle identified for the design of an overall project management system. Whilst …
