Umbrella Summaries
What is political skill?
Political skill refers to “the ability to effectively understand others at work, and to use such knowledge to influence others to act in ways that enhance one’s personal and/or organizational objectives” (Ahearn et al., 2004, p. 311). Unlike organizational politics, which involve selfserving and detrimental behavior, political skill involves positive, sincere, and effective influence (Ferris et al., 2005). The primary measure of political skill is the 18-item Political Skill Inventory, which assesses political skill through four factors: social astuteness, interpersonal influence, networking ability, and apparent sincerity. Example items from each factor, respectively, include “I always seem …

Profit Or Purpose: What Increases Medical Doctors’ Job Satisfaction?, Young Kyun Chang, Won-Yong Oh, Sanghee Han
Management, Entrepreneurship and Technology Faculty Research
This study integrates two competing views to examine whether medical doctors are satisfied with their jobs when they perceive their hospitals as being oriented toward profit (i.e., rational choice theory) or purpose (i.e., public service motivation). Using a sample of 127 doctors from 70 hospitals, this study tests these competing views. The results show that doctors who perceive their hospitals as purpose-driven are likely to experience job satisfaction, and this pattern still holds even if they also perceive their hospitals to be emphasizing profits. However, only the purpose-driven orientation results in job satisfaction via a sense of meaningfulness. Thus, this …

Construction, land and property surveyors are engaged throughout the built environment lifecycle and therefore, are uniquely positioned to lead and accelerate the transformational change required to ensure a sustainable built environment. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) provide a blueprint exhibiting social, economic and environmental goals to be considered as a system of interrelated objectives. This paper offers that organizational underachievement sourced to workplace expertise is a product of bounded perspective constructed by the agency of expertise. Embedded in any bounded perspective is limitations to what can be seen. Organizations that seek to leverage expertise solely on their agency risk organizational silofication. We conclude that recognizing organizational silofication is an opportunity for organizations to address organizational underachievement by addressing the perspectives that create the hidden impediments limiting their overall potential.

Purpose
Much research regarding social media posts and relevancy has resulted in mixed findings. Furthermore, the mediating role of relevancy has not previously been examined. This paper aims to examine the correlating relationship between types of posts made by hotels and the resulting occupancy rates. Then, the mediating role of relevancy is examined and ways that posts can increase/decrease relevancy of the post to potential hotel users.

The Match-Up Hypothesis Revisited: Matching Social Judgments And Advertising Messaging In Celebrity Endorsements, Brittney C. Bauer, Brad D. Carlson, Clark D. Johnson
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Purpose – Although endorsers are thought to be highly effective when they match-up with a product, our current understanding of endorser match-up offers little insight for distinctions between equally attractive and trustworthy endorsers who have equivalent expertise in the product category, yet still diverge in their performance. Therefore, the main purpose of this research is to understand how a match between social judgments (i.e., warmth vs. competence) of a celebrity endorser and specific advertising appeals (i.e., symbolic vs. utilitarian) can improve consumer responses to an endorsement.
Design/methodology/approach – A preliminary study empirically distinguishes perceptions of warmth and competence …

The Effects Of Carbon Emissions And Agency Costs On Firm Performance, Muhammad Nurul Houqe, Solomon Opare, Muhammad Kaleem Zahir-Ul-Hassan, Kamran Ahmed

Carbon emissions and agency costs can have an impact on firms' financial performance. However, limited attention has been paid to the combined and gradual effects of these two factors on firms' performance. We explore the separate and combined effects of carbon emissions and agency costs on firms' financial performance by utilizing data from 2323 US firms that disclosed their environmental information to CDP from 2007 to 2016. The results indicate that firms with higher carbon emissions experience lower performance as the market reacts negatively. Further, firms with both higher carbon emissions and higher agency costs have lower performance. We also …

How Apis Create Growth By Inverting The Firm, Seth G. Benzell, Jonathan Hersh, Marshall Van Alstyne
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
Traditional asset management strategy has emphasized building barriers to entry or closely guarding unique assets to maintain a firm’s comparative advantage. A new “Inverted Firm” paradigm, however, has emerged. Under this strategy, firms share data seeking to become platforms by opening digital services to third-parties and capturing part of their external surplus. This contrasts with a “pipeline” strategy where the firm itself creates value. This paper quantitatively estimates the effect of adopting an inverted firm strategy through the lens of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), a key enabling technology. Using both public data and that of a private API development firm, …

When Abby Lopp, a first-year pharmacy student at East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy, received the report back of how her body processes different pharmaceutical compounds, also called her pharmacogenomics (PGx) profile, it shined new light on her medical history.
“I used to take Zyrtec in high school and remember feeling tired and drowsy,” said Lopp, from Jefferson North Carolina. “After getting my PGx report back, I learned that I have increased adverse effects from Zyrtec, so now I take Allegra.”
Because all humans have slightly different genes, made up of DNA, people metabolize pharmaceutical drugs differently. …
