The Future Of Destination Marketing Organizations In The Insight Era, Arthur Huang, Efren De La Mora Velasco, Adam Haney, Sergio Alvarez
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
There has been a growing interest in examining the implementation of insight-era technologies (e.g., AI, social media) and big data for sustainable tourism development. However, actionable guidelines to promote a holistic adaptation and the effective functioning of destination marketing/management organizations (DMOs) in the increasingly data-infused world are still needed. This perspective paper posits a research-based framework that DMOs can use to become more responsive and efficient in their marketing and planning efforts in the current AI-infused world. Four propositions are presented to support DMOs' transition to the insight-era: (a) DMOs' organizational adaptations and workforce development and training, (b) active engagement …

Institutions are vital for solving collective action problems and enabling functioning markets. Based on this notion, the institutional voids literature has offered a dynamic research agenda for international business scholarship. In this perspective article, we leverage work from political science, development economics, legal studies, and anthropology to: (a) expose hidden assumptions about institutional voids in the management literature; (b) propose new directions for research based on our revised assumptions; and (c) provide direction-specific theoretical constructs from other social sciences to stimulate theory-building and empirical inquiry into institutional voids. We develop a framework that identifies four revised assumptions about institutional voids …

This paper questions the effectiveness of shareholders’ protection from managers who may make choices contrary to the shareholders’ interests. We focus on “silent shareholders” who rarely vote because their goal is purely financial return with no intention or ability to participate in corporate strategies. Since they have virtually no influence on company policies, we argue that they should not be viewed as firm owners, but as consumers of managerial services. Therefore, we suggest the creation of a new class of “capital contract” stock that would grant silent shareholders an explicit legal contract that clearly specifies their rights and compensations in …

The Role Of Interdependencies In Blockchain Adoption: The Case Of Maritime Trade, Melissa M. Appleyard, Kristi Yuthas
Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
Despite its many potential economic and organisational benefits, enterprise blockchain (distributed ledger) technology has still not been widely adopted. From the viewpoint of the participants, the deployment of a blockchain that links collaborating enterprises requires value creation that will exceed investment, including investment in operational and strategic change. The theory behind and practice of cross-enterprise open innovation can inform blockchain adoption. Blockchain implementation requires and creates interdependencies across collaborators, both among enterprise consortium partners and with stakeholders in the broader ecosystem. Distinguished from arm’s-length forms of collaboration, interdependencies occur when organisations intentionally collaborate to become reliant upon one another. In …

In recent years, tourism gentrification has made great progress in rural areas and has had significant impacts on these areas' development, specifically in the domains of the economy, living standards, community, culture, and environment. Tourists play a key role in developing tourism gentrification in rural areas, but research investigating tourism gentrification in rural areas from the tourist perspective is scarce. To fill this gap, we focus on tourism gentrification and develop a measurement scale from the tourist perspective through multiple qualitative and quantitative steps. Our findings confirm that tourism gentrification in rural areas from the tourist perspective comprises eight dimensions: …

Supply Chain Management (SCM) systems provide a digital platform for the supply chain organizations to communicate and exchange information. In the food industry, SCMs provide the essential software components for monitoring food transportation and product handling. However, contemporary SCM systems suffer from non-traceability, non-interoperability and poor resiliency. Global food supply chains are at risks from cyber threats, which will lead to food shortages and poor quality control. In this paper, we present ChainSCAN, a three-layer design of a fully decentralized and blockchain-based SCM system that protects data security, privacy, and remove single point of failures of traditional SCMs. In addition, …

Managing risk effectively is essential for business success, and thus understanding risk is vital for business executives. Effective risk management increases firm value, whereas poor risk management will damage shareholder wealth. In this article, we examine the risk literacy of business executives and find significant variation among the leaders we sample. Our findings suggest that business executives would be well served to evaluate their own risk literacy, and remediate, if necessary; to work to increase risk literacy in the company’s employees; and to include risk literacy as an important and routine part of the firm’s overall culture. Because the importance …

This paper studies the integration of the crowd workforce into a generic last-mile delivery setting in which a set of known delivery requests should be fulfilled at a minimum cost. In this setting, the crowd drivers are able to choose to perform a parcel delivery among the available and displayed requests. In contrast to past approaches, where drivers are either (a) given the choice of a single task chosen so as to optimize the platform’s profit, or (b) …
