What Machines Can't Do (Yet) In Real Work Settings, Thomas H. Davenport, Steven M. Miller Oct 2022

What Machines Can't Do (Yet) In Real Work Settings, Thomas H. Davenport, Steven M. Miller

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

AI systems may perform well in the research lab or under highly controlled application settings, but they still needed human help in the types of real world work settings we researched for a new book, Working With AI: Real Stories of Human-Machine Collaboration. Human workers were very much in evidence across our 30 case studies. In this article, we use those examples to illustrate our list of AI-enabled activities that still require human assistance. These are activities where organizations need to continue to invest in human capital, and where practitioners can expect job continuity for the immediate future

Investigating Accessibility Challenges And Opportunities For Users With Low Vision Disabilities In Customer-To-Customer (C2c) Marketplaces, Bektur Ryskeldiev, Kotaro Hara, Mariko Kobayashi, Koki Kusano Oct 2022

Investigating Accessibility Challenges And Opportunities For Users With Low Vision Disabilities In Customer-To-Customer (C2c) Marketplaces, Bektur Ryskeldiev, Kotaro Hara, Mariko Kobayashi, Koki Kusano

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Inaccessible e-commerce websites and mobile applications exclude people with visual impairments (PVI) from online shopping. Customer-to-customer (C2C) marketplaces, a form of e-commerce where trading happens not between businesses and customers but between customers, could pose a unique set of challenges in the interactions that the platform brings about. Through online questionnaire and remote interviews, we investigate problems experienced by people with low vision disabilities in common C2C scenarios. Our study with low vision participants (N = 12) reveal both previously known general accessibility issues (e.g., web and mobile interface accessibility) and C2C specific accessibility issues (e.g., inability to confirm item …

The Role Of Institutions In Job Teleworkability Before And After The Covid-19 Pandemic, Peter Norlander, Chris Erickson Sep 2022

The Role Of Institutions In Job Teleworkability Before And After The Covid-19 Pandemic, Peter Norlander, Chris Erickson

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The teleworkability of jobs – whether they can and will be performed remotely – has been increasingly contested in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. To explain which jobs are teleworkable and why, we emphasize the institutional context of a job, including differences among firms, union representation, professional licensing requirements, sector, and employment models. Using a novel dataset of job characteristics extracted from the text of a large sample of online job advertisements from 2010-2021, we examine various explanations for change in the availability of remote job opportunities. Prior to the pandemic, private sector, non-union, and unlicensed jobs lagged federal …

The Effects Of Perceived Destination Restorative Qualities On Tourists’ Self-Identity: A Tale Of Two Destinations, Xianyang Hu, Songshan (Sam) Huang, Ganghua Chen, Feifei Hua Sep 2022

The Effects Of Perceived Destination Restorative Qualities On Tourists’ Self-Identity: A Tale Of Two Destinations, Xianyang Hu, Songshan (Sam) Huang, Ganghua Chen, Feifei Hua

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Isolation and anomie caused by the modern life has created multiple identity threats. Tourists’ destination experience has long been considered as a unique way of identity construction. However, little research has investigated whether and how environmental restoration qualities in the tourism context can possibly reinforce self-identity and counteract the effect of identity confusion. Guided by the Attention Restoration Theory, this study aims to develop and test a model to examine the relationships between the dimensions of perceived destination restorative qualities (PDRQs) and tourist self-identity with two tourist samples in China collected in two distinctive destinations (Sample 1, n = 361; …

Attracting Accounting And Finance Graduate Talent – Beyond The Big Four, Denise Jackson, Julia Richardson, Grant Michelson, Rahat Munir Sep 2022

Attracting Accounting And Finance Graduate Talent – Beyond The Big Four, Denise Jackson, Julia Richardson, Grant Michelson, Rahat Munir

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This study responds to ongoing challenges with recruiting quality graduate talent in the accounting/finance industry, critical given transforming labour market requirements. Drawing on Person-Organisation Fit (POF) theory, we explore what attracts 475 Accounting/Finance students to graduate roles, their preferences for different organisation types, and influences on career decision-making. Supporting earlier work, we evidence dominating preferences for ‘Big Four’ firms yet discern several appealing features of other organisational types and important intrinsic and extrinsic factors in decision-making. Findings inform stakeholder strategies to support students for sustainable careers in different accounting/finance contexts and improve the recruitment outcomes of all organisation types in …

Work-Family Conflict, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul Sep 2022

Work-Family Conflict, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul

Umbrella Summaries

What is work-family conflict?

Work-family conflict is defined as “a form of interrole conflict in which the role pressures from the work and family domains are mutually incompatible in some respect” (Greenhaus & Beutell, 1985, p. 77). Work-family conflict is often contrasted with work-family enrichment, which represents the positive spillover that can occur between the work and family domains. The idea of work-family conflict is grounded in resource drain theory, which suggests that individuals have limited physical, psychological, and social resources to draw on while performing in different roles. When individuals devote large quantities of their resources to one domain …

Work-Family Enrichment, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul Sep 2022

Work-Family Enrichment, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul

Umbrella Summaries

What is work-family enrichment?

Work-family enrichment is used to describe the positive benefits derived from spillover between work and family. Specifically, work-family enrichment is formally defined as “the extent to which experiences in one role improve the quality of life in the other role” (Greenhaus & Powell, 2006, p. 73). This is often contrasted with the concept of work-family conflict, which represents the negative spillover between the work and family domains. Work-family enrichment is often distinguished by the direction of its effect; benefits from work that are applied to the family domain are termed work-to-family enrichment (WFE), and benefits from …

The Storm In World Fertilizer Markets Continues, John C. Beghin Sep 2022

The Storm In World Fertilizer Markets Continues, John C. Beghin

Cornhusker Economics

This article updates the recent article on world fertilizer markets by Beghin and Nogueira (2021), which noted the perfect storm affecting global fertilizer markets through high demand, droughts affecting fertilizer supply, high fossil energy prices, COVID 19-related supply-chain disruptions, and trade policies, all conspiring to elevate fertilizer nominal prices to levels not seen since 2008. In the last 10 months, the Ukraine-Russia war and associated trade sanctions have exacerbated the disruptions in fossil energy, grain, vegetable oil, and fertilizer markets already present in 2021. On the more hopeful side, some United States trade policy developments will help reduce US fertilizer …

Do Local And World Covid-19 Media Coverage Drive Stock Markets? Time-Frequency Analysis Of Brics, Ahmed Bossman, Tamara Teplova, Zaghum Umar Sep 2022

Do Local And World Covid-19 Media Coverage Drive Stock Markets? Time-Frequency Analysis Of Brics, Ahmed Bossman, Tamara Teplova, Zaghum Umar

All Works

The role of media coverage as a proxy for investor sentiments has led to the assessments of the impact of COVID-19 media coverage on financial markets. To determine how both local and global media coverage affect financial markets differently, we investigate this issue from the perspective of top emerging markets, BRICS (i.e., Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa). With datasets covering January 2020 to March 2022, we employ the wavelet coherence technique on two major subsamples, viz. initial outbreak year sample and the “new normal” era sample. Our findings demonstrate the leading role of BRICS equities in the initial …

Decentralizing Corporate Governance? A Praxeological Inquiry, Scott L. Mitchell, Mark D. Packard, Brent B. Clark Sep 2022

Decentralizing Corporate Governance? A Praxeological Inquiry, Scott L. Mitchell, Mark D. Packard, Brent B. Clark

Marketing & Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications

The theory and practice of corporate governance has been in something of an arms race with corporate malefactors—as corporate governance mechanisms have incrementally advance, so too have the strategies of malefactors who skirt those governance practices to engage in costly misconduct. Modern centralized governance approaches appear inapt to filling the gaps caused by agency and knowledge problems. Here, we start afresh using the atypical ‘praxeological’ method to reconstruct governance theory anew from basic foundations. The resultant theory is distinctive from prevailing corporate governance theorizing in several key ways. One of the more important conclusions from our reconstructed theory is that …

Iq-Pass: Access To Growth, Arjen Van Klink Dr, Helen De Hann Dr Sep 2022

Iq-Pass: Access To Growth, Arjen Van Klink Dr, Helen De Hann Dr

Case Studies

The market of (temporary) access control is one example of an industry that is impacted by digitization and internationalisation. New possibilities come up and ask for reaction from suppliers, but require the re-specification of needs from customers as well. It is also an illustration how new regulation, in this case especially related to privacy and migration, influences industrial dynamics. Related to new technological possibilities and legislative conditions, the industry is in a process of consolidation. This case focuses on a small but innovative company, IQ-Pass, developing its growth strategy in Europe within its constellation of being a subsidiary of the …

2022-September-23-Rotation Spotlight- Riana Roberts ('23), Bill Gatton College Of Pharmacy, East Tennessee State University, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU News

Meet Riana Roberts ('23) from Saint Louis, Missouri. She had a rotation experience at Adams Pharmacy in Mountain City. Her preceptor was alumna Dr. Holly Adams ('21).   What did your day look like on rotation?   During my time at Adams Pharmacy, the first thing I would do is help the pharmacy team fill prescriptions in the morning. During the afternoon, I was given the opportunity to verify prescriptions along with my preceptor to gain more experience as a future pharmacist. I learned so much from knowing how to handle drug utilization reviews to understanding insurance claim issues. While at my …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: September 21, 2022, Eric Thompson Sep 2022

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: September 21, 2022, Eric Thompson

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The LEI-N changed little in August 2022, falling by just 0.01%. The leading indicator is designed to predict economic growth six months in the future. As a result, the flat value for the indicator in August signals that economic growth in Nebraska will be slow at the beginning of 2023. Several components of the leading indicator worsened during August. First, there was a decrease in building permits for single-family homes, likely in response to rising interest rates. Second, initial claims for unemployment insurance rose during August, suggesting some softening of the state’s strong labor market. By contrast, positive business expectations …

2022-September-21-Etsu Establishes Center For Interprofessional Collaboration, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU News

JOHNSON CITY (Sept. 21, 2022) – East Tennessee State University’s commitment to interprofessional education is strengthening and expanding with the recent creation of the ETSU Center for Interprofessional Collaboration.

Interprofessional education (IPE) is rooted in students learning and practicing team-based, collaborative care in order to improve health outcomes for patients.

Ten years ago, ETSU began its formal approach to IPE by establishing programming and laying the groundwork for the renovation of a building on ETSU’s VA campus to be dedicated completely to interprofessional education. Bishop Hall (also known as Building 60) opened in 2018 and has served as a …

JOHNSON CITY – For Air Force veteran Sarah Royse, the prospect of going to college after serving her country was exciting – and challenging.

Royse’s mom knew a veteran who had received assistance from East Tennessee State University’s Veterans Upward Bound. Royse decided to reach out to the program herself.

“They helped me figure out all these different scholarships and grants that I could qualify for,” said Royse, now employed with the office as an educational advisor. “I didn’t know that there was so much help out there for veterans until this office started helping me.”

Setting The Stage For The Next Farm Bill Debate, Bradley D. Lubben Sep 2022

Setting The Stage For The Next Farm Bill Debate, Bradley D. Lubben

Cornhusker Economics

The 2018 Farm Bill is set to expire in September 2023. New farm bill legislation will be needed by then if authority is to be extended for a wide range of programs from farm support to conservation, nutrition assistance, credit, trade promotion, rural development, research and education, and more.

The agricultural committees in Congress have already held initial hearings and many agricultural and other interest groups have noted their policy priorities. However, formal debate on a new farm bill is not expected to begin in earnest until early 2023 when a new session of Congress convenes.

While the formal debate …

Busy Boards, Entrenched Directors And Corporate Innovation, Brian Bolton, Jing Zhao Sep 2022

Busy Boards, Entrenched Directors And Corporate Innovation, Brian Bolton, Jing Zhao

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

We provide a comprehensive study of how different corporate governance mechanisms influence corporate innovation. Using panel data regression analysis across a sample of more than 13,600 firm-years for firms based in the United States between 1996–2010, we find that entrenched boards, though commonly associated with lower firm value, actually generate substantial innovation. We find that busy boards hinder innovation unless they also have interlocking relationships. Conversely, interlocked directors enhance innovation, unless they are busy. Directors who are CEOs or Board Chairs at other companies hinder innovation. Interestingly, despite being significant determinants of firm value in other studies, director experience, independence …

Technology-Enabled Behavioral Health Integration Decreases Emergency Department Utilization, Adam Pardes, Rachelle Rene, Phansy Chun Chun, Mollie Cherson Sep 2022

Technology-Enabled Behavioral Health Integration Decreases Emergency Department Utilization, Adam Pardes, Rachelle Rene, Phansy Chun Chun, Mollie Cherson

Jefferson Hospital Staff Papers and Presentations

Background:

Behavioral health integration allows for patient-centered care, leads to higher levels of provider-patient engagement, and is key to improving patient outcomes. However, behavioral health integration is administratively burdensome and therefore is often not adopted. Technology presents opportunities to increase care team efficiency and improve patient outcomes. The goal of this study was to retrospectively compare clinical outcomes and emergency department utilization in patients using a technology platform compared to patients receiving treatment as usual.

Methods:

The technology platform, NeuroFlow, was deployed to deliver technology-enabled behavioral health integration in 30 clinics, and 598 electronic health records were analyzed.

Results:
