Motivators And Inhibitors For Business Analytics Adoption From The Cross-Cultural Perspectives: A Data Mining Approach, Hokey Min, Bih-Ru Lea

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the increasingly knowledge-based world economy, the multinational firm's success often hinges on its business intelligence capability nurtured by business analytics (BA). Despite the growing recognition of BA's role in enhancing the firm's intellectual capital and subsequent competitiveness, it is still unknown what truly motivates and inhibits BA adoption. This study aims to identify key influencing factors for BA adoption such as organizational characteristics, information security/privacy, and information technology maturity (knowledge level). In so doing, this study employed data mining and data visualization techniques to develop specific patterns of BA adoption practices based on a combined sample of 224 Korean …

Security Is Local: The Influence Of The Immediate Workgroup On Information Security, Dawei David Wang, Alexandra Durcikova, Alan R. Dennis Jan 2023

Security Is Local: The Influence Of The Immediate Workgroup On Information Security, Dawei David Wang, Alexandra Durcikova, Alan R. Dennis

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Information security is a multilevel phenomenon with employee security decisions being influenced by macrolevel factors (e.g., organizational policies), mesolevel factors (e.g., one's immediate workgroup—IW), and microlevel factors (e.g., individual personalities). We argue that an employee's local IW (i.e., immediate supervisor and coworkers) has a strong effect on security. This paper focuses on the effects of these mesolevel factors in the presence of macro-and microlevel factors. Drawing on the social structure and social learning framework as well as workgroup research, we hypothesize that the security behavior of an employee's IW supervisor and coworkers moderated by the nature of these relationships influences …

Pepper, Just Show Me The Way! How Robotic Shopping Assistants Should Look And Act, Nobuyuki Fukawa, Yu Shan Huang, Barry J. Babin

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Artificial intelligence enables modern robots to serve as service and sales assistants. Today's robotic shopping assistants (RSAs) can appear either humanoid or non-humanoid and possess utilitarian and/or hedonic attributes. However, many questions remain unexplored regarding an effective customer-centric RSA design. Do customers prefer a humanoid or non-humanoid RSA with hedonic or utilitarian attributes? To answer those questions, the research deploys a mixed-method approach involving a survey of customers who have interacted with the Pepper Robot, a humanoid robot (Study 1), and follow-up experiments examining customer responses to a humanoid/non-humanoid RSA with hedonic/utilitarian attributes (Studies 2 and 3). The research employs …

Over the past decade, the Vietnamese capital market has undergone a remarkable transformation, with a significant focus on its stock market that has displayed substantial expansion since 2012. This research delves into the impact of this market progression on the choices pertaining to capital structure made by companies listed in Vietnam. By analyzing a range of trade-off and pecking order models and amalgamating them into a unified regression framework, we gauge their capacity to elucidate these decisions. Our study outcomes unveil that the trade-off theory offers a more robust rationale for the capital structure determinations of Vietnamese companies, particularly during …

Public Procurement For Innovation Through Supplier Firms' Sustainability Lens: A Systematic Review And Research Agenda, Peter Adjei-Bamfo, Hadrian Geri Djajadikerta, Ferry Jie, Kerry Brown, Reza Kiani Mavi

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Public sector purchasing processes are gaining increasing prominence as a demand-side innovation tool for addressing national sustainability challenges. Accordingly, there has been growing research attention to this topic. Prior studies suggest three key rationales that underlie the use of public sector procurement to drive innovation: (i) the buyer–user rationale (for creating new needs); (ii) the market/system failure rationale (for improving suppliers' capacity to innovate); and (iii) the public services rationale (for improving public services). However, operational activities at the upstream supply chain affecting the sustainable innovation capacities of supplier firms appear to be under-researched in the public procurement for innovation …

Information Systems Faculty Publications

Crowdfunding projects depend on signalling to demonstrate authenticity. However, literature on signalling has focused on investment and reward crowdfunding with lesser emphasis on donation crowdfunding. This study adopts the signalling theory and bundling concepts to explore the impact of two validation mechanisms on donation crowdfunding outcomes. Drawing from the literature on bunding and signalling, we investigate the impact of a mixed product bundling strategy (community pot mechanism) and ideological bundling strategy (thirdparty signalling) on donation project success. Based on data from Mchanga.com, our findings indicate that the mixed product bundling strategy positively influences project amount of funds raised and backer …

Pre-Purchase And Post-Purchase Sales Promotions On E-Commerce Platforms: The Effects Of Promotional Benefits On Customer-Based Brand Equity, Ting Zhu, Yaobin Lu, Bin Wang, Lijuan Zhao

Information Systems Faculty Publications

This research examines the impacts of electronic commerce platforms' sales promotions' benefits on customer-based brand equity (platform brand awareness and platform brand association) and how these relationships are moderated by the promotion stage. Based on the two functions of sales promotions (stimulation vs. maintenance), we propose a five-benefit framework consisting of exploration, convenience, savings, social bonds and structural bonds. Our results reveal the two functions of sales promotions and the positive effects of the benefits on customer-based brand equity (CBBE). The differences between pre- and post-purchase sales promotions are also significant. We discuss the managerial and theoretical implications of these …

How Much Do Investors Care About Social Responsibility?, Scott Hirst, Kobi Kastiel, Tamar Kricheli-Katz

Faculty Scholarship

Perhaps the most important corporate law debate over the last several years concerns whether directors and executives should manage the corporation to maximize value for investors or also take into account the interests of other stakeholders and society. But, do investors themselves wish to maximize returns, or are they willing to forgo returns for social purposes? And more broadly, do market participants, such as investors and consumers, differ from donors in the ways in which they prioritize monetary gains and the promotion of social goals?

This project attempts to answer these questions with evidence from an experiment conducted with 279 …

Ethical lapses in major corporations continue to draw public attention to the specter of corporate misconduct. This paper presents a pedagogical approach that is designed to enhance student understanding and appreciation of the challenges that business leaders face when confronted with the conflict between the profit-maximizing demands of capitalism and the ethical expectations of society. This is an approach that fully acknowledges the seductive nature of unethical conduct in search of corporate rewards. This paper presents a method which can be applied both in undergraduate and graduate coursework, facilitates the examination of two corruption cases (Enron and WorldCom), and highlights …

Ethical Compatibility Of Socially Responsible Banking: Comparing The Japanese Main Bank System With The Usa, Kanji Kitamura Dec 2022

Ethical Compatibility Of Socially Responsible Banking: Comparing The Japanese Main Bank System With The Usa, Kanji Kitamura

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Although the broad idea of socially responsible banking is widely accepted, no precise definition of ethical banking is available because of various ethical preferences. This paper develops the concept of ethical compatibility as a theoretical description of ethical banking. It offers a multi-level framework to illustrate the compatibility between the regional ethics and preferred forms of ethical banking prevalent in Japan and the USA. This paper first revisits the two paradigms of financial systems and examines the two types of business purposes as ethics. Drawing on the literature concepts, this study posits a conceptual framework demonstrating the compatibility between the …

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Studies on sectoral incidence show that industry bears more than two-thirds of the tax, while the services sector bears about 21 per cent and agriculture 3.0 per cent. In the services sector, transportation and trade together account for one-third of GDP. The wholesale and retail trade sector contributes 18 per cent to GDP but pays only 2.9 per cent in income tax. The potential realizable gap in this sector is 0.5 per cent of GDP. Except for a few companies, the transport subsector is dominated by small- and medium-size operators. Only air and shipping companies yield some revenues. Similarly, out …

Another History Of Global Financial Markets: Local Stock Market Integration Since 1913 From A Network Perspective, Cécile Bastidon, Michael Bordo, Antoine Parent, Marc Weidenmier

Business Faculty Articles and Research

We examine local and global equity market integration since 1900 using network methods. The analysis uncovers a new stylized fact about equity market integration over the past 120 years. Local equity market integration generally increases over the entire sample period. This finding is at odds with much of the existing literature that describes long-run market integration as following a U-shape pattern. Global stock market integration peaks in 1913 followed by disintegration during the Great Depression and Bretton Woods periods. Then it rebounds and achieves the highest level of integration during the recent period of globalization that began in the early …

Fixing The Taxation System - Part I, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Very few people outside the economics profession realize that fiscal (government revenue and expenditure) and current accounts (inflows and outflows of foreign exchange) are closely interlinked. A current account is an accounting identity which shows the difference between a country’s national savings and domestic investments. China is a current account surplus country because its national savings are higher than its investment needs and is therefore a capital exporting nation that is financing the current account deficit of the US. Pakistan, except for three years – 2003, 2004 and 2005 – has been a current account deficit country. Since significant foreign …

While organisations are increasingly interested in artificial intelligence (AI), many AI projects encounter significant issues or even fail. To gain a deeper understanding of the issues that arise during these projects and the practices that contribute to addressing them, we study the case of Consult, a North American AI consulting firm that helps organisations leverage the power of AI by providing custom solutions. The management of AI projects at Consult is a multi-method approach that draws on elements from traditional project management, agile practices, and AI workflow practices. While the combination of these elements enables Consult to be effective in …

Creating Data From Unstructured Text With Context Rule Assisted Machine Learning (Craml), Stephen Meisenbacher, Peter Norlander

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Popular approaches to building data from unstructured text come with limitations, such as scalability, interpretability, replicability, and real-world applicability. These can be overcome with Context Rule Assisted Machine Learning (CRAML), a method and no-code suite of software tools that builds structured, labeled datasets which are accurate and reproducible. CRAML enables domain experts to access uncommon constructs within a document corpus in a low-resource, transparent, and flexible manner. CRAML produces document-level datasets for quantitative research and makes qualitative classification schemes scalable over large volumes of text. We demonstrate that the method is useful for bibliographic analysis, transparent analysis of proprietary data, …
