The Impact Of Covid-19 On Women And Work: Career Advancement Challenges, Sara Mcphee Lafkas, Marin Christensen, Susan R. Madsen

The COVID-19 pandemic upended countless lives all over the world. Considerable research has shown that women’s career progression has been more negatively impacted by the pandemic than men’s, especially in the wake of school closures and increased childcare responsibilities. In order to understand more deeply the impact of the pandemic on women’s careers, a large mixed-method survey was conducted in Idaho, a western state in the United States. This article reports on the responses of 2564 respondents to one of three open-ended questions taken from the overall survey, namely: “How has the pandemic impacted your career advancement experiences and opportunities …

What did your day look like on rotation?
A typical day on a psychiatry rotation with Dr. Melton involves looking up new and existing patients before their appointment in the internal medicine clinic or the infectious disease clinic. Once the patient arrives, the pharmacy team conducts an interview that involves a medication reconciliation, medication assessment, monitoring, and therapeutic adjustments if needed. We get …

Civil Society And Sense Of Community In Ukraine: From Dormancy To Action, Eric C. Martin, Kateryna Zarembo
Civil Society And Sense Of Community In Ukraine: From Dormancy To Action, Eric C. Martin, Kateryna Zarembo
Faculty Journal Articles
The academic literature offers different views on the strength of Ukraine’s civil society, but Ukraine’s massive civic engagement and collective action, most recently in defense against Russian aggression, offers a startling picture of grass-root activism. Based on interviews, surveys and archival research, we highlight changes and nuances to Ukrainian civil society, civic engagement and motivations over time, from Euromaidan, through the hybrid Russian aggression in the East, to the recent full-scale Russian invasion. In doing so, we explore a more inclusive understanding of civil society complemented by sense of community and community responsibility.

The Status Of Women In Utah Politics: A 2023 Update, April Townsend, Susan R. Madsen
Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications
Although Utah has a rich heritage of women’s involvement in voting, advocacy, and various types of political participation, for decades Utah has lagged behind most states in terms of women running for and serving in elected political roles. To track progress, the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) began reporting on the status of women in Utah politics in 2014, with updates in 2017, 2021, 2022, and now 2023. Although strides have been made in increasing the number of women serving in political roles in recent years, there is still work to be done. Research continues to confirm that when …

Workforce Trends To Watch In 2023, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel
Cornhusker Economics
The rise of quiet quitters, digital nomads, and shaky employee trust are some of the major workforce trends that need watching in 2023, according to a recent article published by the Harvard Business School. Coupled with an uncertain economy and a tight labor market, business owners can view these potential trends as either challenges that pull their business down or opportunities that offer a competitive advantage. To leverage these toward business growth and increased productivity, it takes an understanding of how these trends emerged and how they could be an asset in an ever-changing business environment.

The Information In Industry-Neutral Self-Financed Trades, Yashar H. Barardehi, Zhi Da, Mitch Warachka
Business Faculty Articles and Research
We identify Industry-Neutral Self-Financed Informed Trading (INSFIT) as stock trades financed by offsetting, equivalent dollar-denominated stock trades in the same industry. Approximately 37% of short-term mutual fund trading profits can be attributed to these trade pairs. Consistent with informed trading, INSFIT precedes unusually high media coverage for the underlying stocks. The trades underlying INSFIT are also larger as the release of stock-level news becomes more imminent. Both relative valuation and the hedging of industry exposure motivate INSFIT’s industry neutrality. While INSFIT positively impacts fund performance, active fund managers who execute INSFIT more aggressively obtain smaller trading profits per execution.

A Configurational Theory Of Generalized Exchange In Stakeholder-Oriented Firms, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Violet Ho, Douglas A. Bosse, Donal Crilly
Management Faculty Publications
Recent developments in stakeholder theory have refined our understanding of value creation via bilateral reciprocity. Generalized exchange is another important microfoundational mechanism in value creation, but because of the potential for free-riding it is surprising that some stakeholders contribute more resources to a firm’s value-creating nexus than would be expected based on contractual obligations, and even beyond what bilateral reciprocity would predict. This paper aims to identify the minimum conditions that promote generalized exchange in a firm’s value-creating nexus. Because generalized exchange is causally complex—it can occur in multiple contexts and through various combinations of explanatory factors—a configurational theorizing approach …

The Impact Of Business-To-Business Salespeople’S Social Media Use On Value Co-Creation And Cross/Up-Selling: The Role Of Social Capital, Omar S. Itani, Vishag Badrinarayanan, Deva Rangarajan
Marketing Faculty Publications
Purpose
This study aims to develop and test a process model of the effect of social media use by business-to-business (B2B) salespeople on their value cocreation and cross/upselling performance. Adopting a research acquisition perspective, the authors claim that salesperson’s social media use is critical for generating social capital – an operant resource characterized by superior market knowledge, reputation and networking – which, in turn, directly and synergistically enhances value cocreation and cross/upselling outcomes.
Design/methodology/approach
A model is developed based on extant sales research on salesperson’s social media use and social capital theory. Data from B2B salespeople is analyzed using structural …

“Let’S Have A Chat:” Applying Chatgpt And Other Large Language Models To The Practice Of Forensic Accounting, Daniel Street, Joseph Wilck

ChatGPT has captured the popular imagination because of its conversational voice, its wide scope of ‘knowledge’, and far-ranging abilities. In this paper, we use an innovative interview method to introduce CPAs to ChatGPT, its development, and the current state of its capabilities. We then draw upon our own expertise to discuss the evolution of large language models, suggest applications of large language models (LLMs) in the field of accounting, critically evaluate LLMs’ current strengths and weaknesses, and propose five principles to effectively and safely leverage LLMs in the accounting domain.
