Leaders' Virtual & In-Person Communication: The Impact Of Employee Preference On Job Satisfaction, Adalin Mcdaniel

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Communication between supervisors and subordinates has consistently been viewed as a primary element of leadership, and a factor that is important in the leader-subordinate relationship via Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) theory. Recently, with the massive shift to virtual working, leadership communication has gained greater prominence in research and practical settings. Therefore, examining the role that virtual leadership communication plays in employee job satisfaction is an important first step in beginning to understand the shift to predominant work settings from home. I examined the influence of employee perceptions and preferences of leadership communication on job satisfaction via a panel design in which …

Bi-Weekly Facilitated Peer Group Sessions Propel Accountability, Carol Wittmeyer

Business Faculty/Staff Publications

Most business plans fail. The research and evidence are overwhelming. Try a Google search on business execution or implementation and you will find hundreds of thousands or more results describing this doom. There are many reasons for this, and they include factors such as inappropriate or overly ambitious plans, and not providing a laundry list of needed resources such as experts and funding. So, what can NSRA business owners do to lessen the chance they become a statistic? Consider joining a facilitated peer group.

2023-May-01-Discovering His Place In Politics, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU News

JOHNSON CITY (May 2023) – Aiden Graybeal felt drawn to politics from an early age.

“I’ve always been a weird political kid,” he said, “and there aren’t a lot of opportunities to explore that in high school and elementary school. My parents don’t know anything about politics – they don’t care to – so I had to do this all on my own. When I came to college, a friend said, ‘Hey, I’m going to do this TISL thing. Have you heard of this?’ I discovered there’s this whole world I was missing out on – all these things I’d …

Development & Validation Of A Scale Of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Alexander Davy May 2023

Development & Validation Of A Scale Of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Alexander Davy

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are important to organizations and their employees. However, confusion in conceptualization and operationalization hinders the development of DEI research and application. The purpose of this study was twofold. First, I conceptualized DEI as a composite construct of three interrelated but differentiated components, that is, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Possible relationships among the three constructs were discussed. Second, I developed a three-dimensional scale to measure diversity, equity, and inclusion as separate constructs. The scale showed acceptable reliability, with Cronbach’s alpha levels for the overall scale and subscales range from .81 to .94. Convergent and divergent validity …

Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Research on animal ethics in tourism has gained traction but posthumanist approaches to wildlife (eco)tourism remain sparse. There has never been a more urgent need to redress this paucity in theory and practice. More than 60% of the world’s wildlife has died-off in the last 50 years, 100 million-plus nonhuman animals are used for entertainment in wildlife tourist attractions (WTAs), more than one billion “wildlife” live in captivity, and some scholars argue that earth has entered its sixth mass extinction event known as the Anthropocene. This paper presents a posthumanist multispecies livelihoods framework (MLF) based on an applied ethnographic study …

The Effects Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Mergers And Acquisitions, Goodwill, And Goodwill Impairment In The Technology Industry, Dee Webster

Honors Scholar Theses

I explore associations between COVID-19 and changes in mergers and acquisitions (M&As), goodwill valuation, and goodwill impairments in the technology industry. Prior literature explores the pandemic’s effects on the dynamics of M&As, goodwill, and goodwill impairment, but are not specific to the pandemic’s impact on the technology industry. This study references prior literature to provide conceptual support as well as research findings to examine the overall changes in technology companies of interest in this study. First, I find that M&A activity before COVID-19 and during COVID-19 was not substantially different when averaged. Second, I find that there was a significant …

Measuring Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion In The Child Welfare Workforce, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development

QIC-Tips

Some child welfare professionals have stated that there is a critical need for systemic changes to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion, but where do child welfare agencies begin? Although change is never easy, the starting place on the journey to have a diverse, equitable, and inclusive (DEI) workforce is relatively simple. It starts with you—a child welfare supervisor, manager, or administrator. Start by considering what you think you know. Is your knowledge based on perception or data? What experiences shape your perceptions? What tools do you have to measure your workforce? Administrative data sets and surveys that gather both qualitative …

Realizing The Good Despite Customer Mistreatment, Carissa Kim May 2023

Realizing The Good Despite Customer Mistreatment, Carissa Kim

College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Unruly and rude customer behavior is on the rise. Estimates indicate that frontline employees experience ten episodes of customer mistreatment daily. Not only is customer mistreatment detrimental for the frontline employee (e.g., higher turnover, lower job satisfaction, lower well-being, and more), but also for customers that witness (e.g., emotional contagion) or engage (e.g., loss of morals) in these deviant interpersonal behaviors. Extending the body of research on customer mistreatment, my dissertation seeks to investigate silver linings or possible functional consequences of customer mistreatment. My dissertation draws from Emotions as Social Information (EASI) theory to investigate the outcomes of mistreatment in …
