This technical memorandum is intended for companion use with "A Management Control System for Estimating Research and Development Manpower Requirements", Case Institute of …

The Multi-Dimensional Assignment And Quadratic Assignment Problems, William P. Pierskalla Sep 1967

The Multi-Dimensional Assignment And Quadratic Assignment Problems, William P. Pierskalla

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The multi-dimensional assignment problem is a higher dimensional version of the standard (two-dimensional) assignment problem in the literature. The higher dimensions can be though of as time or space dimensions or both. An algorithm is proposed for the solution of the multi-index assignment problem. The algorithm is based on a tree search technique of the branch and bound variety. It uses dual subproblems to provide easily computed bounds for the primal assignment problem. The same algorithm with appropriate modifications is used to find an optimal solution to the multi-dimensional quadratic assignment problem.

Cleveland Heights And The Lee Freeway : A Study Of Collective Opinion And Knowledge In Relation To Characteristics Of The Populace, J. Brunelle, V. D'Alessandro Jr., J. Dido, R. Drees, M. Kaplan

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This study is based on a survey conducted in Cleveland Heights, an eastern suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, in which 255 residents and fifty professionals were interviewed regarding their knowledge and opinions of the proposed Lee Freeway. Knowledge and opinion of those interviewed were determined and compared with distance from the proposed freeway route, length of residence, and number of children living at home. A list of advantages and disadvantages was also compiled from each interview. On the basis of this data, opposition to the Lee Freeway was found to be inversely related to the distance from the freeway. Strength of …

Ladder Variables In Queueing Theory, N.U. Prabhu Aug 1967

Ladder Variables In Queueing Theory, N.U. Prabhu

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

In the present survey, we follow the treatment given by Feller (1966). In Sections 2 and 3, we develop the basic results concerning the ladder processes arising from a general one-dimensional random walk. In Section 4, we apply these results to the waiting time in a single-server queue, with details worked out for the two cases where (i) the arrivals are Poisson, and (ii) service times are exponentially distributed. In Section 5, these two systems are again considered, and the concepts of Sections 2 and 3 are used to investigate the number of customers present in each system at certain …

The purpose of this study is to bring forth relevant information needed to determine the feasibility of an investment project for a married student housing complex on the campus of Western Kentucky University. Only the demand side of the market is analyzed; a potential investor will have the construction and land costs for such an enterprise at his disposal. With the information presented in this study it is hoped that a decision to construct a housing complex will be forthcoming. The study group attempted to present information that will allow a potential investor to make an intelligent decision as to …

Long Range Corporate Planning Model For Major Capital Investments, William G. Lesso Jun 1967

Long Range Corporate Planning Model For Major Capital Investments, William G. Lesso

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

A model of major capital investments is developed for a firm with several existing production facilities and a number of alternatives for investment in new facilities. The model extends previous capital investment models by using discounted after tax earnings as the objective function, by determining the benefits of an alternative through optimum allocation of demand among facilities for each period and by permitting the use of retained earnings and borrowings (which are limited by past investments and earnings). The algorithm provides an optimal solution for much larger problems than could be handled with present day computer equipment using non-linear integer …

Piecewise Linear Concave Ordering Cost Functions In Inventory Theory, Evan L. Porteus Jun 1967

Piecewise Linear Concave Ordering Cost Functions In Inventory Theory, Evan L. Porteus

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The analysis of single product, periodic review, dynamic inventory models has constituted an important part of the Operations Research literature since 1951, when Arrow, Harris, and Marshak introduced them. Periodically, the level of inventory of a single item is examined and a decision made as to whether to order or not, and if to order, how much to order. This decision is made with the intention of minimizing the expectation of the relevant costs to be incurred over a given planning horizon consisting of more than one period. The relevant costs usually consist of the costs attributable to ordering, holding, …

On A Basic Research Cost Effectiveness - Resource Allocation Model, Burton V. Dean, Samuel J. Mantel Jr. May 1967

On A Basic Research Cost Effectiveness - Resource Allocation Model, Burton V. Dean, Samuel J. Mantel Jr.

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This paper develops a preliminary model for use in allocating funds for mission oriented basic research in a government agency. Three submodels are developed - (1) a cost model for estimating the costs of basic research tasks, (2) a linkage model for relating the performance of basic research and subsequent utilization of basic research results in systems and component development, and (3) a value model for estimating the effectiveness of basic research tasks. A cost-effectiveness relationship is developed for use in relating the cost and benefits of basic research programs and tasks. Research allocation models are developed for use under …

A Management Control System For Estimating Research And Development Manpower Requirements, Burton V. Dean, Stuart H. Mann, Burton D. Corwin May 1967

A Management Control System For Estimating Research And Development Manpower Requirements, Burton V. Dean, Stuart H. Mann, Burton D. Corwin

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The problem of estimating research manpower requirements is viewed as a flow of funds model. The transitional flow of funds from the operating divisions to the research cost centers is modelled using transfer coefficients that are determined from a statistical analysis of historical data. Transfer coefficients are multiplied by estimated predictions in planned divisional research budgets to yield estimated expenditures in specific research areas. The transfer coefficient model is tested and implementation procedures are presented.

An Introductory Survey Of Integer Linear Programming, Milton E.F. Schoeman Apr 1967

An Introductory Survey Of Integer Linear Programming, Milton E.F. Schoeman

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

Researchers have concentrated great effort in recent years in the area of integer linear programming. This survey paper is intended as an introduction to some of this work with emphasis on its application to the project selection problem. The techniques outlined may be classified into three groups: (1) cutting plane methods; (2) partial enumerative or combinatoric methods; (3) efficient (suboptimal) heuristic methods. General descriptions of methods in each of these classifications are given along with an indication of their relative computational efficiency. Finally, some insight is given towards the future direction of efforts in this area, which would also provide …

Project Selection Under Cost And Payoff Value Uncertainties, Burton V. Dean, T.S. Chidambaram, R.R. Palanki Apr 1967

Project Selection Under Cost And Payoff Value Uncertainties, Burton V. Dean, T.S. Chidambaram, R.R. Palanki

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This paper considers a stochastic version of the project selection model (Model T in Dean and Hauser, "Advanced Material Systems Planning", IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, March 1967), where $C has to be allocated among n technical approaches so that the probability of at least one approach being successfully completed is maximized. The cost of the ith approach, ci, is a random variable with distribution function, while the probability of success is, in general, a function P^(ct) of the cost. A dynamic programming formulation has been given to solve this problem assuming that the budget allocated to one approach cannot …
