Use Of A Decision Box/Pert Network For Predicting Probabilities And Time Durations, Edward M. Norin Jan 1972

Use Of A Decision Box/Pert Network For Predicting Probabilities And Time Durations, Edward M. Norin

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

It was desired to estimate the time required and probability of success in the development of a new biocide, DS. Since many alternate paths would be considered but not developed, the normal deterministic activity networks—such as CPM or PERT—could not handle this problem. Instead, an extended decision box network coupled with PERT was used to create an algorithm with two degrees of freedom: probability of success and time distribution. The results of the algorithm indicate a 96% probability that at least one path to commercial DS will be developed. The expected time for development is 111 workdays, with a 90% …

A Multi-Library System Distribution Network Design, M.G. Fancher Beeler, J.P. Herling, Arnold Reisman, Burton V. Dean

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

At the time of this study, the chief burden for physical transportation of library materials in the Greater Cleveland (Ohio) area rested with the independently operating and overlapping services of the Cleveland Public Library (CPL) and Cuyahoga County Public Library (CCPL). Library materials, however, are shipped to and from the various branches of several independent suburban library systems; school libraries of over thirty Boards of Education; several universities and numerous "special" public and private libraries. In all, the network includes over 700 nodes. The direct cost of the two major transportation systems, e.g., CPL and CCPL, exceeds $150,000 a year. …

Inventory Cost Parameters, Muhittin Oral Jan 1972

Inventory Cost Parameters, Muhittin Oral

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The work in this research falls in the area of operations research known as inventory theory, concentrating on inventory cost parameters (or functions) in general and on the development of a model to evaluate shortage cost in particular. The inventory policy (Q,S,R) with constant lead time L is introduced, where Q is the constant size of orders, S the reorder level and R is the upper limit for the backlogged demand. Associated with the (Q,S,R) policy a (R+S+2)-state semi-Markov process is defined the states corresponding to no-stockout durations starting initially with various levels of physical inventory and to stockout duration …

Evaluation Of Shortage Costs - Part I An Objective Function And Queueing Theoretic Approach, Muhittin Oral, S. Subba Rao Jan 1972

Evaluation Of Shortage Costs - Part I An Objective Function And Queueing Theoretic Approach, Muhittin Oral, S. Subba Rao

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

Most of the objective functions of inventory control models have cost parameters, namely, set-up or order cost, inventory carrying cost, and shortage cost. Successful implementation of inventory models requires an accurate evaluation of these cost parameters. Of these costs, shortage costs are the hardest to handle. This paper investigates and derives a model to evaluate shortage cost parameters utilizing a queueing-theoretic approach. The basic idea is to identify the measurable factors of shortage cost for which the associated costs are much simpler to obtain. The shortage cost can then be expressed in terms of these component costs. When inventory level …

A Social Service Measurement Model, Samuel J. Mantel, Jr., Allan L. Service, Arnold Reisman, Raymond A. Koleski, Arthur Blum, Robert Reich, Burton V. Dean, Miriam Jaffee, Howard Reiger, Richard Ronis, Judah Rubenstein Jan 1972

A Social Service Measurement Model, Samuel J. Mantel, Jr., Allan L. Service, Arnold Reisman, Raymond A. Koleski, Arthur Blum, Robert Reich, Burton V. Dean, Miriam Jaffee, Howard Reiger, Richard Ronis, Judah Rubenstein

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The development and implementation of a measurement model for a system of social service agenci.es is discussed. The system, the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, is a voluntary association of a full range of human service agencies. Design and workings of the project team, analysis and structuring of the organizational system, and overall goals of the research are first presented. The measurement model itself is then delineated. Essentially, the model is a device for assembling and synthesizing information on system throughput, priorities, and indicators of "quality" of service. Finally, the information system which supports the model is examined and other …

Note On Finite Convergence Of Exterior Penalty Functions, Klaus Truemper Jan 1972

Note On Finite Convergence Of Exterior Penalty Functions, Klaus Truemper

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

It is shown that existence of a saddlepoint of the Lagrangian function in an optimization problem is sufficient to assure finite convergence of a special exterior penalty function. Also, an estimate of the penalty weight is given that yields finite e-convergence for the quadratic exterior penalty function. [Likely published circa 1972.]

In The Matter Of Robert Trivison, 8148 Forest Court, North Royalton, Ohio, Rules Of Practice - Rule 2(E): Order Accepting Resignation From Commission Practice, United States. Securities And Exchange Commission

Federal Publications

Robert Trivison, an accountant, has submitted an offer to resign from practice before the Commission. Having been advised by the Commission that it was contemplating the institution of administrative proceedings pursuant to Rule 2(e) of its Rules of Practice, based on the allegations in a pending injunctive action, to determine whether he should be temporarily or permanently denied the privilege of appearing or practicing before it, Trivison agreed to resign on condition that no administrative action be brought against him, and that, if his offer of resignation were accepted, he would, without admitting or denying the allegations in the injunctive …

Pooling-Of-Interests Accounting, United States. Securities And Exchange Commission Jan 1972

Pooling-Of-Interests Accounting, United States. Securities And Exchange Commission

Federal Publications

In recent months, the Commission has noted an increasing number of business combinations which appear to meet the individual requirements for pooling-of-interests accounting set forth in Accounting Principles Board Opinion No. 16 but which do not conform with the overriding thrust of that Opinion which requires that a combination represent a sharing of rights and risks among constituent stockholder groups if it is to be a pooling of interests. Paragraphs 28, 45 and 47 of that Opinion clearly provide that such a sharing of risk is an essential element in poolings, and the specific requirements set forth in paragraphs 46, …

A Simple Method For The Construction Of Empirical Confidence Limits For Economic Forecasts, William (Bill) H. Williams, M. L. Goodman Dec 1971

A Simple Method For The Construction Of Empirical Confidence Limits For Economic Forecasts, William (Bill) H. Williams, M. L. Goodman

Publications and Research

A simple method for the construction of empirical confidence intervals for time series forecasts is described. The procedure is to go through the series making a forecast from each point in time. The comparison of these forecasts with the known actual observations will yield an empirical distribution of forecasting errors. This distribution can then be used to set confidence intervals for subsequent forecasts. The technique appears to be particularly useful when the mechanism generating the series cannot be fully identified from the available data or when limits based on more standard considerations are difficult to obtain.

Analysis And Prediction Of Telephone Demand In Local Geographic Areas, Douglas M. Dunn, William (Bill) H. Williams, W. Allen Spivey Oct 1971

Analysis And Prediction Of Telephone Demand In Local Geographic Areas, Douglas M. Dunn, William (Bill) H. Williams, W. Allen Spivey

Publications and Research

An approach to forecasting the demand or local area telephone service is presented in this paper. The specific problem discussed is the fore casting of main stations in three Michigan metropolitan areas. Several different statistical models are used. The first class of models introduced uses adaptive exponential smoothing and is based solely on the past history of the time series involved. Although appropriate data at the local area level are very difficult to obtain, two exogenous time series related to household formations are used to construct more elaborate models for one of the areas. The various models are evaluated by …

Stockage And Transfer Rules For Multilocation Inventory Control, Chandrasekhar Das Sep 1971

Stockage And Transfer Rules For Multilocation Inventory Control, Chandrasekhar Das

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

A multilocation stochastic inventory problem is dealt with in this dissertation. It is assumed that stock is supplied from a central source and there exists a provision for transfer of stock over the locations. The stockage and transfer decisions are assumed to be centralized. The redistribution is made on the basis of stock review at predetermined points in time between every two consecutive procurement opportunities. Under certain regularity conditions, the optimality of a simple class of transfer rules is established for the two-location system. The optimal stockage rule is also characterized for this system on the supposition that interim transfers …

Optimal Scheduling Of One-Shot Projects, Thomas L. Morin Sep 1971

Optimal Scheduling Of One-Shot Projects, Thomas L. Morin

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This study addresses itself to the scheduling and sequencing aspects of some major capital expenditure planning problems. Specifically, several models for the scheduling and sequencing of systems of durable, high-cost ("one-shot") projects, which in the aggregate are subject to a number of continuous-time demand requirements, are formulated and analyzed. Project selection, sequencing and timing decisions which constitute minimum-cost strategies are determined for various identifiable cases via mathematical programming. In particular, the special structure of this class of continuous time combinatorial decision problems is exploited, leading to the development of several efficient dynamic programming algorithms for the solution of deterministic multi-dimensional …

A Statistical Grouping Of Corporations By Their Financial Characteristics., William (Bill) H. Williams, Michael L. Goodman Sep 1971

A Statistical Grouping Of Corporations By Their Financial Characteristics., William (Bill) H. Williams, Michael L. Goodman

Publications and Research

It appears to a widely held view that corporations with similar operational characteristics ought to have similar financial characteristics. For example, one might expect that the financial characteristics of two drug companies would be similar. This seems entirely reasonable. Unfortunately however, there does not appear to be any quantitative analysis of this point in the literature. Furthermore, discussions with our financial colleagues lead to the conclusion that, if such financial differentiation of corporations were possible, it is by no means obvious what the variables of differentiation would be. Consequently, such an analysis was undertaken and is described in this paper. …

A Preliminary Report: Economic Effects Of Female Discrimination, Burton V. Dean, Burton V. Dean, David E. Sands Aug 1971

A Preliminary Report: Economic Effects Of Female Discrimination, Burton V. Dean, Burton V. Dean, David E. Sands

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

1964 was the year of passage of the Civil Rights Act Title VII of which addressed itself to the question of discrimination in employment because of sex. Since then, however, many companies have taken advantage of the lack of federal prosecution under this law. In the past few years, a few cases have been tried under this law but no appreciable headway was made in the fight against discrimination. This paper is a discussion of one of the methods by which the practice and effect of discrimination against women in hiring, firing, layoff rehiring and unequal pay can be proved. …

Application Of Pert In Plant Construction Scheduling In The Ohio Brass Company, Burton V. Dean, Samuel Jackson Mathis, Vaughn E. Huckfeldt

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The use of PERT on the Ohio Brass Project was successful in establishing a controlled review of all of the important tasks in the project and resulted in new awareness by the ITA project managers of the benefits obtained from good project control. This is illustrated by the desire to expand similar project control efforts on all future ITA projects. The objectives established by UAI iii assisting ITA in the use of modern project management techniques and in the use of existing time- sharing computer services will have been highly educational to ITA, and very satisfactorily completed: This project will …

Algorithms For Discounted Stochastic Games: A Comparison Of Efficiency, Vijaykumar V. Aggarwal Aug 1971

Algorithms For Discounted Stochastic Games: A Comparison Of Efficiency, Vijaykumar V. Aggarwal

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

There are two algorithms for the solution of two person zero sum stochastic games with a finite number of states or positions and where future payoffs are discounted. The first algorithm is on somewhat similar lines as that of Hoffman and Karp for the undiscounted case, and the second one is recently developed by Rao, Chandrasekaran and Nair. This paper presents computer programs for the two algorithms and computational experiments for comparing the efficiency of the algorithms. The results show that the second algorithm requires fewer iterations and moreover, the computation time for each iteration in this is significantly lower. …
