A Methodology For Forecasting Patient Load For A Dental Practice, Arnold Reisman, Hamilton Emmons, Edward J. Green, Ronald Occhionero, Keki R. Dadachanji, Susumu Morito Mar 1976

A Methodology For Forecasting Patient Load For A Dental Practice, Arnold Reisman, Hamilton Emmons, Edward J. Green, Ronald Occhionero, Keki R. Dadachanji, Susumu Morito

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This paper describes a methodology to forecast the patient load in a dental practice. Three different situations are treated individually: Forecasting in a new practice, forecasting in an established practice, and forecasting during merger. The paper presents both the mathematical models used in forecasting and a set of forms (similar in format to the Internal Revenue Service 1040 forms) which can be used to systematically compute the forecast value. Scheduling of patients and operatories [4,12] and economic analysis of a dental practice [6] require a dependable forecast of the patient load. This paper is intended to help the dentist make …

Nonlinear Programming And An Optimization Problem On Infinitely Differentiable Functions, Vasant A. Ubhaya Mar 1976

Nonlinear Programming And An Optimization Problem On Infinitely Differentiable Functions, Vasant A. Ubhaya

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This paper was originally titled "Extremum Problems on the Space of Infinitely Differentiable Functions, I”. A nonnegative, infinitely differentiable function φ defined on the real line is called a Friedrichs mollifier function if it has support in [0,1] and ∫₀¹ φ(t)dt = 1. In this article and a sequel [18], the following problem is considered: Determine Ak = inf ∫₀¹ φ(k)(t)dt, k=1,2,..., where φ(k) denotes the kth derivative of φ and the infimum is taken over the set of all mollifier functions, which is a convex set. This problem has applications to monotone polynomial approximation as shown by this author …

The Solution Of Nonlinear Programs Using The Generalized Reduced Gradient Method, Arvind Jain Mar 1976

The Solution Of Nonlinear Programs Using The Generalized Reduced Gradient Method, Arvind Jain

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The Generalized Reduced Gradient Method for nonlinear programming is discussed with emphasis on a fast, reliable computer implementation of the algorithm. The problems studied relate to basis selection, degeneracy, the acceleration of the solution of nonlinear equations, and the design of a mathematical programming system for sparse large-scale nonlinear programs.

Simulation Models Applied To Dental Practice Management: A Survey, Susumu Morito, Arnold Reisman, Hamilton Emmons, Edward J. Green, Ronald Occhionero Mar 1976

Simulation Models Applied To Dental Practice Management: A Survey, Susumu Morito, Arnold Reisman, Hamilton Emmons, Edward J. Green, Ronald Occhionero

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The purpose of this paper is to review recently completed and ongoing work in the field of simulation applied to dental practice management in general and problems of scheduling patients, workers and operatories in particular. In dentistry, as in many other areas of health care delivery, rapid changes are coming about. Practices are moving toward an increasing prevalence of group practices and to the introduction of new categories of allied professionals. These factors, plus the increased demand for dental care that may be anticipated in the coming years, are making it ever harder, and ever more important, to find solutions …

Computer Simulation Of Pre-Scheduling In A Dental Practice Involving Expanded Function Dental Auxiliaries, Arnold Reisman, Hamilton Emmons, Edward J. Green, Ronald Occhionero, Shailesh J. Mehta, Susumu Morito, Keki R. Dadachanji Mar 1976

Computer Simulation Of Pre-Scheduling In A Dental Practice Involving Expanded Function Dental Auxiliaries, Arnold Reisman, Hamilton Emmons, Edward J. Green, Ronald Occhionero, Shailesh J. Mehta, Susumu Morito, Keki R. Dadachanji

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This paper discusses computer-aided comparisons of performance of alternative policies for patient and worker scheduling in a practice involving expanded function dental auxiliaries. The comparisons are made in terms of net earnings, total number of patients served, worker utilization, etc., using computer based simulation. Predetermined scheduling is proved to be an efficient method under a wide range of conditions.

Sequencing Jobs For A Single Worker To Process And Deliver, R. Chandrasekaran, Hamilton Emmons Feb 1976

Sequencing Jobs For A Single Worker To Process And Deliver, R. Chandrasekaran, Hamilton Emmons

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The problem of sequencing n jobs on one processor is considered, under the additional assumption that jobs are not completed until delivered. A single worker does both the processing and delivery, and deliveries can take place in batches following the completion of any job. Several special cases of this general class of problems are motivated, formulated, and solved.

Survey Of The Alumni Of The Department Of Operations Research Case Western Reserve University 1951-1975, John J. Rasmussen, Thomas George

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The Department of Operations Research at Case Western Reserve University conducted a survey of alumni to assess the educational background, curriculum effectiveness, career paths, and utility of their degrees over its 25-year history. The findings reveal a strong preference among graduates for incorporating applied and implementation-focused content into the curriculum. Most alumni pursue careers in non-academic settings, with many earning additional graduate degrees. Recent graduates frequently work in industries where the degree is not explicitly required. The results provide valuable insights for current students planning their educational and professional trajectories and inform departmental decisions on curriculum development. Additionally, the study …

Computer Graphics As An Aid To Teaching Geometric Transformations, Sister Joseph K. Mcadams, Arlan R. Dekock

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

During the past several years, there has been much discussion and controversy over what should be taught in high school mathematics, in general, and in high school geometry, in particular. Numerous mathematicians have encouraged the teaching of transformations as part of the standard high school mathematics curriculum[1-4,6-9]. The results of a recent survey of high school teachers of mathematics indicate that 19% have taught geometric transformations, 26% feel adequately prepared to teach such a topic, and 50% would like to teach the topic if materials were available for the average college prep student[5].

Fuels For Future Electric Power, Oliver S. Yu, A. Manne

Faculty Publications

OVER THE NEXT FORTY YEARS, THE U.S. WILL EXPERIENCE PROBLEMS BECAUSE OF DWINDLING SUPPLIES OF FOSSIL FUELS AND AN INCREASING DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL. SEVERAL ALTERNATIVES ARE AVAILABLE, SUCH AS MORE STRINGENT CONSERVATION MEASURES OR ALTERNATIVE SOURCES OF ENERGY. HOWEVER, NO SINGLE ALTERNATIVE WILL BE SUFFICIENT. A STUDY WAS CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE MOST EFFICIENT ALLOCATION POSSIBLE OF RESOURCES. THE ANALYSIS WAS CONDUCTED ON THE BASIS OF ASSUMED HAPPENINGS IN THE FUTURE RATHER THAN BY PROJECTING HISTORIC TRENDS INTO THE FUTURE. FOR EXAMPLE, AS ONE SOURCE OF ENERGY SUCH AS OIL BECOMES MORE SCARCE, THE COST WILL GO UP, INDUCING …
