Strategic Management For Wholesalers: An Environmental Management Perspective, William L. Cron, Valerie A. Zeithaml

Historical Working Papers

The purpose of this paper is to propose that environmental management, a conceptual framework from the organizational policy and strategy literature, can function as a useful paradigm for wholesalers who desire to adopt a long-range planning perspective. This perspective, often called strategic management, may be critical to the success and survival of firms in the 1980's as economic, political, competitive, regulatory, and societal forces exert increasing impact on their performance levels.

Modeling Earnings Behavior, Michael F. Van Breda

Historical Working Papers

The differences between the economic rate of return measure and the accounting rate of return measure are explored. The accounting system filters return data by averaging and other processes to create a slow rate of reversion.

The Dimensions Of Self-Management, David Goodman, Leland M. Wooton Jan 1981

The Dimensions Of Self-Management, David Goodman, Leland M. Wooton

Historical Working Papers

The concepts that differentiate self-management from authority-based management are explored. A survey, used to assess how executives view self- management, demonstrates relatively strong support for the notion. An overall analysis suggests that in the post WWII era, democracy in the work place and self-fulfillment elements in work design are gradually displacing classic American management and are now allied with the American value of individualism.

The Sensitivity Of Policy Elasticities To The Time Period Examined In The St. Louis Equation And Other Tests., Frank J. Bonello, William R. Reichenstein

Historical Working Papers

Using the reduced form equation of the St. Louis Fed's monetarist macroeconomic model, we examine the sensitivity of monetary and fiscal policy elasticity estimates to the empirical estimation technique, to the assumed lengths of policy lags, and. to the time period studied. The empirical results are not very sensitive to the first two factors, but the results are quite sensitive to the time period examined. Two plausible explanations for the divergent results are considered and examined and the implications of the divergent results for the usefulness of the St. Louis model is discussed •

A Flow Chart Approach To Consolidations, Francis A. Bird, Phillip A. Jones Sr.

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

Although the consolidation process is a series of interrelated adjustments and eliminations, it is rarely pictured as an integrated whole. The flow chart approach presented herein accomplishes this objective and can serve as a model for the solution of consolidation problems. Following this conceptual approach allows the user to see the place of each adjustment and elimination in the overall perspective of the consolidation process.

Women And Handicrafts: Myth And Reality, Jasleen Dhamija

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This issue of SEEDS reviews handicrafts as a means of providing income to women. In some instances, crafts are a solid source of income and can also provide women with a link to their own cultural heritage. In most instances, however, crafts production concentrates women in an area that is labor intensive and exploitative, providing a meager income for long hours of work. Handicrafts can be a means of increasing income for women in some settings, but only under the conditions outlined in this report, since crafts are specialized activities which have limited markets and offer limited potential as a …

This field study examined the effects of MBO on measures of quantity and quality of performance and satisfaction with the work and supervision among employees in a human services agency. Although not all the quantity measures improved significantly, the combined measure for quantity of performance and one of two quality measures showed significant improvement following implementation of MBO. Satisfaction with supervision also significantly improved but not satisfaction with work. The study lends support to the use of MBO in public sector organizations.

Designing A Budgeting System With Planned Confusion, John Joseph Williams Jan 1981

Designing A Budgeting System With Planned Confusion, John Joseph Williams

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

The article explores the potential virtues of dual budgeting processes coexisting within a single budgeting information system for organizations experiencing changing environments. The treatment of discretionary cost activity in the traditional budgeting process is discussed and a comparison of the effectiveness of the techniques of zero-based budgeting and traditional budgeting is presented. Using both approaches simultaneously is said to hold potential for combining the best of both methods, but the cost-effectiveness of such a dual budgeting process is noted as a limiting factor.
