A Strategic Planning Model For Bank Retail Outlet Development, Sedrak Chitariance, Arnold Reisman Jan 1983

A Strategic Planning Model For Bank Retail Outlet Development, Sedrak Chitariance, Arnold Reisman

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This paper presents a strategic planning model designed to help commercial banks and financial institutions optimize their retail outlet networks, including full-service branches and ATMs. The model incorporates market share equations based on the distribution of retail outlets across geographical areas, referred to as markets, and integrates these equations into a mathematical optimization framework. The primary objective is to maximize overall retail profit by determining the optimal number of branches and ATMs to open or close during a defined planning horizon. Budget constraints and other optional features influence the model's structure, providing flexibility in variable selection and constraint application. This …

Quality Control And Servicing : A Decision Framework, Charles S. Tapiero, Hau L. Lee Jan 1983

Quality Control And Servicing : A Decision Framework, Charles S. Tapiero, Hau L. Lee

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

It has been widely recognized that quality control and the repair services provided by a firm are important strategic tools for the sales of the firm's product. This paper considers the relationship between these two important decision variables of the firm: quality control and service capacities. For both the cases of degenerate and non-degenerate probability distributions of defective items, analytical results for the determination of optimal quality control inspection policy and optimum service capacities are obtained. The sufficient conditions derived provide a powerful means to determine the optimal strategies under different scenarios. For the non-degenerate case, bounds for the optimal …

A Finite Improvement Algorithm For The Linear Complementarity Problem, Konstantinos Paparrizos Jan 1983

A Finite Improvement Algorithm For The Linear Complementarity Problem, Konstantinos Paparrizos

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This research is concerned with the development of a computationally efficient improvement algorithm for the linear complementarity problem (LCP). Our approach to finding a solution to the LCP is to solve the equivalent constrained optimization problem (COP) of maximizing the sum of the minimum of each complementary pair of variables subject to the constraints that each such minimum is nonpositive. An optimal solution with objective function value of zero yields a solution of the LCP. The algorithm, descent in nature, is similar to the simplex method in the sense that it moves between basic points of an associated system of …

Can The Free Enterprise System Survive In An Ethically Schizophrenic Culture?, Richard C. Chewning Jan 1983

Can The Free Enterprise System Survive In An Ethically Schizophrenic Culture?, Richard C. Chewning

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

The stock market remained on a virtual plateau from 1968 until 1983—hardly a sign of vigorous national health. Our long-term decline in productivity indicates economic anemia. The national debt continues to soar even when a President espouses fiscal conservatism and Congress passes the largest single tax increase in its history. There are also many social and political problems: decay in our inner cities; rising crime; environmental concerns; and many international crises. Under these pressures the culture is beginning to manifest some neurotic characteristics as it develops many negative attitudes. There is a growing sense of nonspecific guilt. We seem uneasy. …

The Influence Of Representation In Intrastate Grant Disbursement, Robert W. Cook Jr., Robert C. Dolan Jan 1983

The Influence Of Representation In Intrastate Grant Disbursement, Robert W. Cook Jr., Robert C. Dolan

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

A common rationale in allocating government grants and aid is income redistribution. Consider receipts by individuals for example. Under a host of programs, economic hardship is a necessary and often sufficient condition for receiving benefits. A second major beneficiary category for federal and state aid is municipalities and localities. There again equity considerations frequently affect grant receipts, although purely demographic factors such as population can also influence the level of assistance. Considered together, one would expect disbursements across these two broad aid categories to be explained by varying economic and demographic factors consistent with the intended equity rationale. Recently, however, …

Price Behavior In Tight Oligopoly, Robert C. Dolan Jan 1983

Price Behavior In Tight Oligopoly, Robert C. Dolan

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

The study examines price behavior in tight oligopoly. The investigation proceeds from the premise that tacit collusion is the only rational response of firms comprising tight oligopoly. The study's thesis is that collusive conduct in tight oligopoly will reflect one of two general pricing patterns: (1) shared monopoly pricing, or (2) mark-up pricing. A unique empirical test of this dual price hypotheses is developed. The test focuses on the nature of price responses to cost and demand changes as reflected in a price equation that is estimated for each of forty-two four-digit SIC industries. The study's results indicate infrequent, but …

Social Desirability Response Effects: Three Alternative Models, Daniel C. Ganster, Harry W. Hennessey, Fred Luthans Jan 1983

Social Desirability Response Effects: Three Alternative Models, Daniel C. Ganster, Harry W. Hennessey, Fred Luthans

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Three models are developed for the effects of social desirability (SD) on organizational behavior research results. SD can act as (a) an unmeasured variable that produces spurious correlations between study variables, (b) a suppressor variable that hides relationships, or (c) a moderator variable that conditions the relationship between two other variable.

A Test Of The International Term Structure Of Interest Rates: The United States-Canadian Experience, 1973-80, John B. Guerard Jr., Robert Berry Jan 1983

A Test Of The International Term Structure Of Interest Rates: The United States-Canadian Experience, 1973-80, John B. Guerard Jr., Robert Berry

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

A new theory of the term structure of interest rates for small open economies has been developed in which a small country with internationally integrated capital markets will have its domestic financial markets dominated by international influences. the international theory of the term structure of interest rates demonstrates how a foreign financial disturbance will directly affect domestic real and nominal interest rates and exchange rates which then affect the price and output channels. We employ univariate and multivariate time series analysis to Canada and the United States to test the imported term structure of interest rates hypothesis. We do not …

Central Bank Of Nigeria Annual Report And Statement Of Account For The Year Ended 31st December, 1982, Central Bank Of Nigeria

CBN Annual Report

The economic slowdown in 1981-1982 led to a decline in mineral and export crop production, with crude oil production falling from 1.440 million barrels in 1981 to 1.29 million barrels in 1982. The Central Bank of Nigeria business survey showed increased manufacturing sales and inventories of finished goods. Inflation decelerated to its lowest level since 1973, mainly due to reduced monetary expansion and increased production of staple food, livestock products, and fish. The money supply rose by 5.6% in 1980 and 3.1% in 1982, but the government sector's share in bank credit increased. The Gross National Product of all industrialized …

Acquiring Small And Medium-Sized Companies: A Study Of Corporate Decision Behavior, Daniel Joseph Power

Faculty Work

This field research study investigated corporate acquisition decisions made by managers in U.S. manufacturing and conglomerate firms. The introductory chapters review organizational decision theories and empirical research on organizational and acquisition decision making. The thesis presents and investigates hypotheses for two descriptive models: a prediction model and a decision-process model. Through mail questionnaires, data were gathered about 28 acquisitions completed between October 1, 1979 and March 31, 1980. Managers were asked for retrospective information about decision activities and for a current assessment of the acquired company's performance . Twenty-six companies made the acquisitions: nine very large companies with 1979 sales …

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a precedent oriented computer assisted method of designing, analyzing and evaluating systems of internal controls. The ..!..nternal Control _!iodel, TICOM III, is fundamentally a design and analysis tool useful in the context of Automated Office Information Systems (AOIS's). Traditional analysis and evaluation tools, such as flowcharting, written narratives and questionnaires, are inefficient, if not insufficient, to support the design and control analysis of these new systems. The advantages of TICOM III over traditional methods such as narrative description, questionnaires and flowcharts are: (1) the evaluation can be more rigorous and exhaustive because of the speed, accuracy and …

Workforce Scheduling With Cyclic Requirements And Constraints On Days Off, Weekends Off And Workstretch, Hamilton Emmons Nov 1982

Workforce Scheduling With Cyclic Requirements And Constraints On Days Off, Weekends Off And Workstretch, Hamilton Emmons

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

For a seven-day workweek with cyclic demand requiring D workers on weekdays and E workers on weekend days, we provide a formula to calculate the minimal workforce necessary to meet these requirements while ensuring each worker receives two off-days per week. This includes the flexibility for workers to have A out of B weekends off, for any A and B (A is equal to or lesser than B). Additionally, we present an algorithm to generate a feasible schedule that ensures all work stretches are between two and four days, except when a worker receives two consecutive weekends off, in which …
