Bought But Never Used: How And When Unused Utility Reduces Subsequent Spending, Shruti Koley, Brandon J. Reich Aug 2023

Bought But Never Used: How And When Unused Utility Reduces Subsequent Spending, Shruti Koley, Brandon J. Reich

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Consumers often buy products that they later do not use. How does failing to use purchased products affect subsequent spending? Six experiments demonstrate that when consumers do not use their purchased products, it decreases their subsequent discretionary spending across product categories due to an aversion to wasted money. We find that this effect is driven primarily by perceived money waste and not product waste. Consequently, the effect persists even when consumers avoid product waste, such as by donating their unused products, but is mitigated when they avoid money waste, such as when their unused products are freely acquired. We also …

A Desire For Success: Exploring The Roles Of Personal And Job Resources In Determining The Outcomes Of Salesperson Social Media Use, Ashish Kalra, Nawar N. Chaker, Rakesh Singh, Omar S. Itani, Raj Agnihotri Aug 2023

A Desire For Success: Exploring The Roles Of Personal And Job Resources In Determining The Outcomes Of Salesperson Social Media Use, Ashish Kalra, Nawar N. Chaker, Rakesh Singh, Omar S. Itani, Raj Agnihotri

Marketing Faculty Publications

Sales researchers have recognized the importance of salesperson social media use in enhancing job outcomes. However, research that considers the influence of salesperson personal factors and the individual's work environment on the impact of social media use on such outcomes (i.e., job satisfaction and salesperson performance) remains neglected in the literature. Leveraging Job-Demand Resource (JD-R) theory, we develop a model that introduces linkages between salesperson social media use, task adaptivity, technology self-efficacy, manager trust, job autonomy, job satisfaction, and salesperson performance. Utilizing a sample of 214 business-to-business salespeople, we find that salesperson social media use positively influences job satisfaction, which …

On Or Off: The Triggering Effect Of Underperformance Duration On Cooperative Innovation, Taoyong Su, Yuzhu Yu, Yongheng Chen, Wanrong Hou Aug 2023

On Or Off: The Triggering Effect Of Underperformance Duration On Cooperative Innovation, Taoyong Su, Yuzhu Yu, Yongheng Chen, Wanrong Hou

Management Faculty Publications

By complementing performance feedback theory with organizational pressure, we argue that underperformance duration breaks the balance between growth pressure and survival pressure and triggers the shift from “on” to “off” of cooperative innovation, which shows an inverted U-shaped relationship between the duration of underperformance and cooperative innovation. Moreover, compared with firms with historical underperformance, firms with peer underperformance will reach the inflection point of the inverted U-shaped relationship after a longer duration. In addition, we find that managerial overconfidence weakens the above relationship. Our hypotheses receive general support by testing the sample of 70 public biopharmaceutical manufacturing companies between 2007 …

What Should I Say? Testing Ways To Reduce Fear And Increase Disclosure Of Incivility In Reference Checks, Benjamin M. Walsh, Brittany Heighton, Chloe Dingens

Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles

We utilize signaling theory as a foundation for testing ways to decrease reference providers’ fear of adverse consequences and increase disclosure of workplace incivility in reference checks. We focus on three reminders–commonly recommended by practitioners–that may be sent to reference providers in the instructions prior to the reference check: reminders of applicant consent, qualified privilege, and confidentiality. 420 supervisors were recruited via Prolific.co to complete a hypothetical reference check for the employee with whom they least like to work. Participants were randomly assigned to one of eight conditions in a two (applicant consent reminder: yes/no) X two (qualified privilege reminder: …

Exploring The Presence Of Nonlinear Deterministic Dynamics In Commodity Prices, Sagar Dahal Aug 2023

Exploring The Presence Of Nonlinear Deterministic Dynamics In Commodity Prices, Sagar Dahal

Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Determining whether commodity prices (and volatility) are driven by linear stochastic processes or low-dimensional nonlinear deterministic dynamics (“chaos”) is crucial for policymaking, forecasting, production, storage, investment, risk management, and hedging decisions. Previous studies that used Lyapunov exponents and correlation dimensions to identify chaotic structures in price series may be unreliable in practical applications because these methods rely on asymptotic properties that require large, noiseless data which is often not available. We applied nonlinear time series analysis approaches to empirically detect the underlying market dynamics using the daily futures prices of ten agricultural commodities. We used phase space reconstruction to reconstruct …

The Mediating Role Of Security Anxiety In Internet Threat Avoidance Behavior, Xuan Wang, Yaojie Li, Hanieh Javadi Khasraghi, Cherie Trumbach Aug 2023

The Mediating Role Of Security Anxiety In Internet Threat Avoidance Behavior, Xuan Wang, Yaojie Li, Hanieh Javadi Khasraghi, Cherie Trumbach

Information Systems Faculty Publications

In the prior technology threat avoidance literature, inconsistent results are found in examining the relationships between individuals’ perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, and perceived threat, as well as the intention to avoid security threats. One possible explanation for this paradox is lacking consideration of the role of individuals’ negative emotions while facing threats, which is rarely studied before. Therefore, the current study aims to extend the landscape of technology threat avoidance theory by exploring the role of security anxiety in individuals’ responses to security threats from the Internet. Our results demonstrate that Internet users’ risk aversion is strongly influenced by their …

Corporate Trade War Uncertainty And Patent Bubble, Xu Yang, Nan Hu, Peng Liang Aug 2023

Corporate Trade War Uncertainty And Patent Bubble, Xu Yang, Nan Hu, Peng Liang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper draws upon resource dependence theory and investigates how trade policy uncertainty affects firm strategic innovation management in China. Adopting a machine learning approach called Word2Vec from computational linguistics, we construct and validate a measure of firm-level managers’ perceived trade war uncertainty (TWU). We find that TWU has a positive effect on the number of total patent applications, but this positive effect is totally driven by low-quality patents instead of high-quality patents. Moreover, we document that firms have stronger incentives for such strategic innovation behavior when the underlying firms are more financially constrained, and/or when the management is more …

Exploring The Future Of Market Driving: A Dialogue With Marketing Thought Leaders, Fiona Schweitzer, Stacey L. Malek, Shikhar Sarin Aug 2023

Exploring The Future Of Market Driving: A Dialogue With Marketing Thought Leaders, Fiona Schweitzer, Stacey L. Malek, Shikhar Sarin

Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although theory points to the relevance of dynamic capabilities in firms that seek to drive new markets, we lack a clear understanding of how firms can develop and apply such capabilities. In this paper, we draw on a seven-step quasi-Delphi study to discuss how market-driving companies should conduct market-sensing, −seizing, and -transforming activities. We identify important research gaps related to determining needs in market sensing, making “big bets” versus taking small, incremental steps in market seizing, and individual versus collective market-driving activities in transforming markets, and on the role of agility and resources in market-driving activities. We propose an integrated …

Communication Quality And Relational Self-Expansion: The Path To Leadership Coaching Effectiveness, Angela M. Passarelli, Mai P. Trinh, Ellen B. Van Oosten, Amanda Varley Aug 2023

Communication Quality And Relational Self-Expansion: The Path To Leadership Coaching Effectiveness, Angela M. Passarelli, Mai P. Trinh, Ellen B. Van Oosten, Amanda Varley

Management Faculty Publications

Leadership coaching—a relational process by which a professional coach works with a leader to support their development—is a common component of learning and development portfolios in organizations. Despite broad agreement about the importance of the coaching relationship, relational processes remain undertheorized, failing to account for the growth and intertwining of coach-leader self-concepts as they engage in a generative and co-creative coaching process. To address these shortcomings, we reconceptualize the relational process within coaching as one of relational self-expansion and theorize that the communication channel and communication quality impact relational self-expansion which, in turn, influences coaching effectiveness. Our hypotheses are tested …

Predicting Dynamic Fragmentation Characteristics From High-Impact Energy Events Utilizing Terrestrial Static Arena Test Data And Machine Learning, Katharine Larsen, Riccardo Bevilacqua, Omkar S. Mulekar, Elisabetta L. Jerome, Thomas J. Hatch-Aguilar Aug 2023

Predicting Dynamic Fragmentation Characteristics From High-Impact Energy Events Utilizing Terrestrial Static Arena Test Data And Machine Learning, Katharine Larsen, Riccardo Bevilacqua, Omkar S. Mulekar, Elisabetta L. Jerome, Thomas J. Hatch-Aguilar

Student Works

To continue space operations with the increasing space debris, accurate characterization of fragment fly-out properties from hypervelocity impacts is essential. However, with limited realistic experimentation and the need for data, available static arena test data, collected utilizing a novel stereoscopic imaging technique, is the primary dataset for this paper. This research leverages machine learning methodologies to predict fragmentation characteristics using combined data from this imaging technique and simulations, produced considering dynamic impact conditions. Gaussian mixture models (GMMs), fit via expectation maximization (EM), are used to model fragment track intersections on a defined surface of intersection. After modeling the fragment distributions, …

Correcting For Range Restriction In Meta-Analysis: A Reply To Oh Et Al. (2023), Paul R. Sackett, Christopher M. Berry, Filip Lievens, Charlene Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Oh et al. (2023) question a number of choices made in our article (Sackett et al., 2022); here we respond. They interpret our article as recommending against correcting for range restriction in general in concurrent validation studies; yet, we emphasize that we endorse correction when one has access to the information needed to do so. Our focus was on making range restriction corrections when conducting meta-analyses, where it is common for primary studies to be silent as to the prior basis for selection of the employees later participating in the concurrent validation study. As such, the applicant pool information needed …

Effects Of A Mindfulness-Based Leadership Training On Leadership Behaviors And Effectiveness, Nina Tan, Eva Katharina Peters, Jochen Reb

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Objectives: Organizations increasingly integrate mindfulness elements into their leadership development. However, there is limited evidence supporting the efficacy of mindfulness-based leadership training (MBLT) due to a scarcity of intervention studies. Theoretically, little is known about mediating mechanisms through which MBLT might affect leadership effectiveness. Thus, this research examined whether MBLT can improve leadership effectiveness and whether leadership behaviors mediated this effect.MethodsWe conducted a quasi-experimental study conducted in a real-world setting with an active control condition. Sixty leaders from various industries participated in either a 2-day intensive MBLT workshop followed by three individual coaching sessions over 3 months, or a presentation …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper investigates the systematic differences between online and offline grocery shopping baskets using data from approximately two million brick-and-mortar and Instacart trips. We apply unsupervised machine learning algorithms agnostic to the shopping channel to identify what constitutes a typical food shopping trip for each household. We find that food shopping basket variety is significantly lower for online shopping trips as measured by the number of unique food categories and items purchased. Within a given household, the Instacart baskets are more similar to each other as compared with offline baskets with twice as many overlapping items between successive trips to …

Overcoming Procrastination: Time Pressure And Positive Affect As Compensatory Routes To Action, Jana Kuhnel, Ronald Bledow, Angela Kuonath Aug 2023

Overcoming Procrastination: Time Pressure And Positive Affect As Compensatory Routes To Action, Jana Kuhnel, Ronald Bledow, Angela Kuonath

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The current work seeks to identify factors that support action initiation from the theoretical lens of self-regulation. Specifically, we focus on factors that reduce procrastination, the delay of the initiation or completion of activities. We draw from action control theory and propose that positive affect operates as a personal and time pressure as a situational factor that unblock routes to action. High positive affect makes people less prone to procrastination because positive affect reduces behavioral inhibition and facilitates the enactment of intentions. By contrast, when positive affect is low, people depend on time pressure as an action facilitating stimulus. We …

Gender Bias In Cultural Tightness Across The 50 U.S. States And Its Links To Gender Inequality In Leadership And Innovation, Xin Qin, Roy Y. J. Chua, Ling Tan, Wanlu Li, Chen Chen Aug 2023

Gender Bias In Cultural Tightness Across The 50 U.S. States And Its Links To Gender Inequality In Leadership And Innovation, Xin Qin, Roy Y. J. Chua, Ling Tan, Wanlu Li, Chen Chen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Cultural tightness theory, which holds that “tight” cultures have rigid norms and sanctions, provides unique insights into cultural variations. However, current theorizing has not analyzed gender differences in cultural tightness. Addressing this gap, this research shows that women are more constrained than men by norms within the same society. By recruiting 15,425 respondents, we mapped state-level gender bias in cultural tightness across the United States. Variability in gender bias in cultural tightness was associated with state-level socio-political factors (religion and political ideology) and gender-related threats. Gender bias in cultural tightness was positively associated with state-level gender inequality in (business and …

Bayesian Optimization With Switching Cost: Regret Analysis And Lookahead Variants, Peng Liu, Haowei Wang, Wei Qiyu Aug 2023

Bayesian Optimization With Switching Cost: Regret Analysis And Lookahead Variants, Peng Liu, Haowei Wang, Wei Qiyu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Bayesian Optimization (BO) has recently received increasing attention due to its efficiency in optimizing expensive-to-evaluate functions. For some practical problems, it is essential to consider the path-dependent switching cost between consecutive sampling locations given a total traveling budget. For example, when using a drone to locate cracks in a building wall or search for lost survivors in the wild, the search path needs to be efficiently planned given the limited battery power of the drone. Tackling such problems requires a careful cost-benefit analysis of candidate locations and balancing exploration and exploitation. In this work, we formulate such a problem as …
