Price, Yield And Net Income Variability For Selected Field Crops And Counties In Nebraska, Boris E. Bravo-Ureta, Glenn A. Helmers

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The primary objective of this study was to establish an empirical estimate of the riskiness of various crops in different regions of Nebraska. For this purpose the variate difference method was used to estimate random variability indexes of prices, yields, and net returns for six Nebraska crops (wheat, soybeans, alfalfa, oats, grain sorghum, corn). The period of analysis included 1957-1976 and one county in each of the eight crop reporting districts was analyzed. Where relevant, both dryland and irrigated alternatives were examined. Most business decision-makers accept more risk only under the conditions that the probability of higher returns accompany risky …

Collective Bargaining And Public Education: A Public Choice Approach, Robert W. Cook Jr. Jan 1983

Collective Bargaining And Public Education: A Public Choice Approach, Robert W. Cook Jr.

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

This paper applies the theory of bureaucracy to a collective bargaining arrangement in the public education labor market. A cyclical voting model is used to explain homogeneous wage demands by education associations. The bilateral monopoly problem is explored under the assumption that educators bargain as "Niskanen-type" bureaus when local school boards lack the ability to quantity adjust between bargaining periods. Increased appropriations to educators are shown to accrue only to existing organization members with no new teachers hired to share in the gains. The results imply that arguments for lower student-teacher ratios are spurious, while the appropriation gains from collective …

Assessing The Competitive Effects Of Major League Baseball's Reentry Draft, Robert C. Dolan, Robert M. Schmidt Jan 1983

Assessing The Competitive Effects Of Major League Baseball's Reentry Draft, Robert C. Dolan, Robert M. Schmidt

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

Major League Baseball’s reentry draft was instituted under the Basic Agreement of 1976. This contract marked the end of a rough ten-year period of increasing dispute between baseball owners and players, and the beginning of a significant modification in the labor market arrangements that governed the sport. Prior to the 1977 season, the reserve clause left players' mobility, and thus bargaining strength, entirely to the discretion of the team with which they had signed as rookies. Revision of the reserve clause under the 1976 Agreement created a competitive auction market for the services of veteran players. To the public eye, …

Economic Foundations For The Competition Policy Implemented By The Eec, J. Patrick Raines Jan 1983

Economic Foundations For The Competition Policy Implemented By The Eec, J. Patrick Raines

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

The purpose of this study is to provide a theoretical economic framework for the analysis of the competition policy implemented by the European Economic Community (EEC). The fundamental objective is to demonstrate that the EEC's actual approach to regulating restrictive business practices can be related to a concept of competition that is relevant and adequate for the analysis and explanation of competition policy in the EEC. The thesis is that a strong theoretical relationship can be shown to exist between EEC business regulation and the conceptual parallels in the theories on competition of J.A. Schumpeter and J.M. Clark.

Aquaculture--Now, Factory Fish Farming, Michael W. Fox Jan 1983

Aquaculture--Now, Factory Fish Farming, Michael W. Fox

Aquaculture Collection

"Aquaculture 1983" was the title of a 5-day symposium and industry exhibit held in Washington, D.C., on january 9- 13,1983, sponsored by World Mariculture Society, Catfish Farmers of America, Fish Culture Section of the American Fisheries Society, U.S. Trout Farmers Association, Shellfish Institute of North America, and National Shellfisheries Association. While ecologists, economists, futurologists, and others have touted the virtues and potentials of intensive fish and shellfish farm- · ing, this growing industry in the U.S. may become blighted by the same problems that have come to afflict agribusiness' "factory farming" of crops, livestock, and poultry.

The 27 students were surveyed on attitudes containing items toward slaughtering animals and toward different uses of animals. Nineteen were later interviewed. Some aspects of slaughtering were reported to be more bothersome than others. The Behavior Of Confined Calves Raised For Veal: Are These Animals Distressed?, M. Kiley-Worthington

Ethology Collection

The behavior of 12 calves confined in crates was recorded at 1-minute intervals for 12-hour periods. These recordings were made at fortnightly intervals from approximately 2 to 16 weeks of age. In all, 864 hours of observations were recorded.

The activities that were performed and the amount of time spent doing each are outlined. Circadian rhythms were controlled largely by feeding time, although there was a difference between diurnal and nocturnal behavior. Individual calves vaned tn how they adapted to the restricted environment. Individual personality profiles and data on the ontogeny of behavior under these conditions are presented.

Ethologic And Economic Examination Of Aviary Housing For Commercial Laying Flocks, D. W. Fölsch, Chr. Dolf, H. Ehrbar, T. Bleuler, H. Teijgeler Jan 1983

Ethologic And Economic Examination Of Aviary Housing For Commercial Laying Flocks, D. W. Fölsch, Chr. Dolf, H. Ehrbar, T. Bleuler, H. Teijgeler

Agribusiness Collection

The result of our work shows that appropriate housing is necessary for intensively kept hens and that the housing has to correspond to the vital needs and the nature of the animals.

This is important for two reasons: a) the innate needs of the birds must be satisfied; b) for the proper development of the animal and successful egg production.

The housing facilities should allow the following functional cycles without restrictions:

Social organization: the structuring of a group or unit of animals.

Locomotion: walking, running, fluttering, flying.

Feeding behavior: search for food and water, food and water pecking, ground scratching, …

The Canadian Harp Seal Hunt: A Moral Assessment, L. W. Sumner Jan 1983

The Canadian Harp Seal Hunt: A Moral Assessment, L. W. Sumner

Hunting Collection

The population of the harp seal, Pagophilus groenlandicus, is divided into three distinct breeding groups, which are centered on the White Sea, the Greenland Sea, and the northwest Atlantic. The last of these three populations, by far the largest, summers in the Arctic waters of Canada and west Greenland. In the autumn the animals in this group begin to migrate southward ahead of the advancing ice pack. By late February or early March, the females reach the breeding grounds off the coast of Newfoundland-Labrador (the Front) and near the Magdalen Islands (the Gulf). They then haul themselves out onto the …
