Optimization Methods In Hierarchical Holographic Modeling, Jacob Thadathil Aug 1983

Optimization Methods In Hierarchical Holographic Modeling, Jacob Thadathil

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

In this study the mathematical formulation of the hierarchical holographic modeling and solution methodology are explored. The hierarchical multiobjective optimization (HMO) methods that have been developed so far are useful mostly for the analysis of large scale systems which are controlled and managed by one planning group only. However, there does exist cases in the real world where the complex system is analyzed, planned and controlled by a multiple of constituencies, each with distinct and overlapping goals and perspectives. One decade ago, a modeling scheme termed as hierarchical overlapping coordination (HOC) scheme was introduced as a means of coordinating the …

Analysis Of Acquisition And Development Options At Beekse Bergen-Memorandum Report, Harrison Price Company Jul 1983

Analysis Of Acquisition And Development Options At Beekse Bergen-Memorandum Report, Harrison Price Company

Harrison "Buzz" Price Papers

Algemeen Burgerlijk Pensioenfonds (ABP) in Heerlen, The Netherlands retained the Harrison Price Company (HPC) to evaluate acquisition and development options at the Beekse Bergen park of Tilburg in Brabant. At the time Beekse Bergen was owned jointly by the cities of Tilburg (15/16th ownership), and was acquirable due to the cities’ apparent reluctance to fund operating losses, which the park had sustained in recent years. ABP had a continuing interest in the theme park industry, particularly with regard to the proposed Water Wonderland project, and in April 1983 retained HPC to assess the outlook for theme park development in the …

The Relative Importance Of Competencies Needed By Industrial Energy Managers From The Larger Manufacturers In Iowa, Timothy J. Eibes Jul 1983

The Relative Importance Of Competencies Needed By Industrial Energy Managers From The Larger Manufacturers In Iowa, Timothy J. Eibes

Graduate Research Papers

The importance of identifying the competencies needed by energy managers is reflected in the seriousness of the energy problem and the impact it has on the industrial setting. The newness and ambiguity of EM, coupled with the increasing importance of the concept, add to the need for identifying the necessary competencies required in managing energy.

Ideally, once these competencies are identified, they should be the focus of those educational curriculums designed to produce energy managers. Currently there are only 25 post-high school institutions in the U.S. that have energy management curriculums (The College Blue Book, 1981). Less than half of …

Information Processing In Social Services: A Review Of Project Iniss, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Project INISS is a research project seeking to establish the information processing practices of social workers in Great Britain. This article summarizes its most important findings for U.S. social workers and social administrators. Originally published in 1983, this article offers a snapshot of information practices in human services organizations a decade before the widespread adoption of the internet and just prior to the early beginnings of ubiquitous – nearly universal – use of computers for record keeping and information processing by social workers.

The four quarter ahead forecasts of out-of-state domestic visitor arrivals for the third quarter of 1983 through the second quarter of 1984 are presented in the graph below and also in the table on the following page. Although official first quarter air and auto arrivals, as well as second quarter air and auto arrivals are not yet available, preliminary figures generated by the BAROMETER suggest that total out-of-state arrivals for the first half of 1983 were approximately 10 percent ahead of 1982.

The Interrelationship Between Human Resource Management And Corporate Strategy, Russell Abratt Jun 1983

The Interrelationship Between Human Resource Management And Corporate Strategy, Russell Abratt

HCBE Faculty Articles

The involvement of personnel executives in the strategic planning of the enterprise is a controversial issue. Personnel has been considered a staff function which deals with day-to-day administration issues and as such has often been regarded with some contempt by the top management team. Concomitantly many firms are viewing the personnel function in an entirely different light; It now participates in the decision making of the company. The objectives of this paper are two fold: firstly to find a link between corporate strategy and human resource management and secondly, to find out whether personnel managers of quoted South African companies …

Interim Report On Orlando Visitors Reactions To Universal Studios Tour Florida, Mccollum/Spielman Associates, Inc.

Harrison "Buzz" Price Papers

In 1980, prior to the completion of EPCOT, a major study was conducted to measure potential interest in visiting both, Universal Studios Tour in Orlando and EPCOT, and how these parks would impact existing attractions. The 1980 study was conducted over several months amongst 1,021 overnight visitors to Orlando, and utilized verbal descriptions and audio tapes to describe both the Universal concept and that of EPCOT. The results of the 1980 study indicated extremely high interest in both Universal and EPCOT, and strong opportunity for both attractions. However, EPCOT has since opened, creating a condition that obviously must be addressed …

Integration Of Social Indicators Into Holistic Geobased Models, F. Gregory Hayden Jun 1983

Integration Of Social Indicators Into Holistic Geobased Models, F. Gregory Hayden

College of Business: Faculty Publications

The current need in social indicator modeling is a general framework for socio-environmental inquiry. This is consistent with John Dewey's advice on social measurement given more than forty years ago. This article will follow Marcus Felson's advice to develop socio-environmental accounts based on "map, clock, and calendar."' This can be accomplished by combining the social fabric matrix with temporal sequencing and geobased data systems.

Principles For Evaluating And Selection Of Alternative Systems, Chung-Ung Lee May 1983

Principles For Evaluating And Selection Of Alternative Systems, Chung-Ung Lee

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The Multi Attribute Decision Making (MADM) problem arises in the selection of the most appropriate alternative from a set of very complex alternatives, such as, plans, projects, actions, tactics, strategies, products, etc. MADM methods are based on the multi-dimensionality of decision attributes. The significant advantage of the MADM method is that they avoid the rather arbitrary transformation of decision attribute values into unique monetary units. Moreover, these methods are capable of taking into account intangible attributes. But MADM methods may suffer from the degree of uncertainty, both in decision attribute values and in the weighting vector. The existence of many …

Functional Approximation Approach To Multistate Control Problems, Prasert Shusang May 1983

Functional Approximation Approach To Multistate Control Problems, Prasert Shusang

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

An iterative method for solving multistate dynamic control problems is presented. The algorithm differs from most decomposition methods currently used in the deterministic optimization of control systems. The method is described as a functional approximation of the recursive equation in dynamic programming. The basic concept is directly dependent on the Sensitivity Theorem in nonlinear programming. The method, referred to as Functional Approximation approach to multistate Control Problem (FACP) is shown to be efficient in case study for operation of multireservoir system. It results in a marked reduction in computer storage and thus directly increases the power of multistate dynamic programming …

The Outlook For Theme Park Development In The Netherlands-Memorandum Report, Harrison Price Company

Harrison "Buzz" Price Papers

Algemeen Burgerlijk Pensioenfonds (ABP) in Heerlen, The Netherlands requested that the Harrison Price Company (HPC) evaluate the outlook for the development of one or major theme parks in Holland as of April, 1983. Specifically, HPC’s charge from ABP was to evaluate the feasibility of the development of one or more theme parks in The Netherlands. The report has the following sections: the market for themed commercial attractions in the Netherlands; the resident market; the tourist market; attendance potential; other considerations; the role of quality; cost of parks; controlling investment size by optimizing park size; required continuing reinvestment versus milking the …
