The Evolution Of Distribution Channels, Russell Abratt, M. H. Lindenburg Mar 1984

The Evolution Of Distribution Channels, Russell Abratt, M. H. Lindenburg

HCBE Faculty Articles

This article deals with the evolution of the theory concerning channels of distribution. Although distribution strategy is an important element of the marketing mix, one can argue that it is the element least thought or written about. The reasons for this are not clear. Perhaps distribution channel is the least glamorous part of marketing theory and yet the most problematic. The authors deal with the evolution of distribution channels in this article as well as co-operation and conflict in the channel of distribution. It is hoped that some research will be stimulated as a result of some of the issues …

A Customer-Oriented Approach For Determining Market Structures, Rajendra K. Srivastava, Mark I. Alpert, Allan D. Shocker Mar 1984

A Customer-Oriented Approach For Determining Market Structures, Rajendra K. Srivastava, Mark I. Alpert, Allan D. Shocker

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

A framework for market analysis based on customer perceptions of substitutability-in-use is presented. An empirical application in the financial/banking services market is used to illustrate that when product preferences are dependent on the use/consumption context (especially relevant when products have multiple uses), situational variables can help predictive ability, and hierarchical clusters (requiring exclusive group membership) may be misleading. Additionally, it is shown that interactions among situation, product, and person factors may be more managerially meaningful than the main effects.

Scheduling And Sequencing Algorithms, Hamilton Emmons Mar 1984

Scheduling And Sequencing Algorithms, Hamilton Emmons

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

Scheduling involves the allocation of resources over time to perform tasks and is a crucial aspect of managerial decision-making. While heuristic scheduling rules are commonly used, their effectiveness and potential alternatives are often not well understood. This memorandum explores job shop scheduling, a critical component of short-term decision-making in industrial production, and its broader applicability to sectors such as healthcare, education, and logistics. Job shop scheduling addresses detailed operations following aggregate planning, employing practical dispatching heuristics to manage dynamic, complex environments. The Shortest Processing Time (SPT) rule is highly effective for minimizing work-in-progress but may delay some orders significantly. For …

Book Review: The Development Of The U.S. Urban System, Vol. 1.: Concepts, Structures, Regional Shifts; Vol. 2: Industrial Shifts, Implications By Edgar S. Dunn, Jr., Roger F. Riefler

College of Business: Faculty Publications

At least since the North-Tiebout debate of the 1950s there has been a tradition of cross-fertilization between regional science and economic history to the benefit of both fields. Although numerous landmark studies mark this symbiosis, one specific study deserves particular mention: Regions, Resources and Economic Growth by Harvey S. Perloff, Edgar S. Dunn, Jr., Eric E. Lampard, and Richard F. Muth (The Johns Hopkins Press, 1960). That book, by combining a massive data collection and refinement effort with the then emerging shift/share technique of regional science, provided a comprehensive picture and causal examination of variations in U.S. regional growth patterns …

Charrette Summary Conceptual Program For Redevelopment Of 1982 Fair Site, Harrison Price Company

Harrison "Buzz" Price Papers

The Harrison Price Company was contracted by the City of Knoxville, Tennessee to aid the City in determining how best to deal with the problems and opportunities of redeveloping the 1982 Knoxville World's Fair site for the benefit of the community at large and evaluate new concept alternatives for the site, with special consideration for its touristic development potential. It was reasoned that recreational and tourist use of the property could yield opportunities and potentials for generating new money and activity for the City. Further employment of this extraordinary parcel of land in conventional uses seemed quite inappropriate. In the …

The Hsus Petitions U.S. Government To Protect Fur Seals Feb 1984

The Hsus Petitions U.S. Government To Protect Fur Seals

Close Up Reports

Since the 1960s, The Humane Society of the United States has vigorously protested this brutal clubbing of the North Pacific fur seals. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, HSUS investigator Frank McMahon repeatedly documented this slaughter and worked with government officials and others to stop it. In 1980, HSUS chief investigator Frantz Dantzler returned to continue the work. Unhappily, these constant efforts, though successful in calling this brutal activity to the attention of the American public, failed to achieve our goal of bringing the Pribilof "harvest" to an end.

Now, we have undertaken a different strategy: on Thursday, January …

Social Efficiency Of The Bankruptcy Reform Act Of 1978 With Regard To Personal Bankruptcy, A Charlene Sullivan, Debra Worden Jan 1984

Social Efficiency Of The Bankruptcy Reform Act Of 1978 With Regard To Personal Bankruptcy, A Charlene Sullivan, Debra Worden

Faculty Publications - College of Business

A socially efficient bankruptcy law is one that would have the effect or minimizing the present value of social costs stemming from bankruptcy while permitting debtors to make a "fresh start." Analysis of a sample or petitions for personal nonbusiness bankruptcy filed under the Bankruptcy Reform Act or 1978 shows that about 30 percent or petitions for Chapter 7 and about 25 percent of petitions for Chapter 13 were cases where social costs were not minimized as would be required under socially efficient bankruptcy legislation. The social costs of Chapter 7 may be reduced under proposed reform (S.445 and H.R. …

Receipt Of Child Support By Single-Parent Families, Philip K. Robins, Katherine P. Dickinson Jan 1984

Receipt Of Child Support By Single-Parent Families, Philip K. Robins, Katherine P. Dickinson

Economics Articles and Papers

Recent attempts to reduce welfare dependency have centered on collecting child support from absent parents. In this paper, data from a supplement to the April 1979 Current Population Survey are used to examine several issues related to child support. One important finding concerns the lack of a formal child-support obligation for a large number of single-parent families. Establishing such an obligation, maintaining stable, secure incomes for absent fathers, and liberalizing custody arrangements appear to be the major policies required to increase child-support collections for single-parent families.

Participative Management: Selective Means Effective, J. Kenneth Matejka, D. Neil Ashworth Jan 1984

Participative Management: Selective Means Effective, J. Kenneth Matejka, D. Neil Ashworth

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

Participative management has been a hot topic of debate for decades. intuitively, if workers are allowed to take part in decision that affect their work lives they should be happier and, therefore, more productive. While this hypothesis is attractive, especially to caring managers and writers, the effective use of PM has proven to be much more complicated than originally anticipated. What is PM? What costs are associated with PM? What benefits does PM produce? When can PM be used most effectively?

To date, management experts and practitioners have agreed to disagree regarding PM. Conflicting and ambiguous studies and experiences abound. …

Evaluating Educational Inputs In Undergraduate Education, Robert C. Dolan, Clarence R. Jung Jr., Robert M. Schmidt Jan 1984

Evaluating Educational Inputs In Undergraduate Education, Robert C. Dolan, Clarence R. Jung Jr., Robert M. Schmidt

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

This paper examines the input-output relationship for private undergraduate education. The motivation for such a study stems from a long-standing concern within academe for a better understanding of the relationships between student quality, faculty effort, campus environment, and the end result of an "educated" person. Though precise and objective measures of educational output are difficult to formulate, we would argue that alumni achievement is an important and measurable output. Specifically, we focus on the number of baccalaureate alumni who went on to earn a Ph.D. But even with an acceptable output measure, research assessments of the educational process are not …

The Theoretical Rationale For A Common European Currency Revisited, J. Patrick Raines Jan 1984

The Theoretical Rationale For A Common European Currency Revisited, J. Patrick Raines

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

At the outset of a discussion of monetary integration, the characteristics that are essential for a monetary union as well as those necessary for the continued and successful existence of the monetary union must be considered.

These three requirements—effectively a single currency, a single union monetary policy, union control of international reserves and the external exchange rate—are regarded here as essential for an arrangement to qualify as a monetary union. It is necessary to realize from the beginning that the political commitment to achieve the goals of a European monetary system must be present. In other words, the national sovereignty …
