Organizational Commitment, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul Nov 2023

Organizational Commitment, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul

Umbrella Summaries

What is organizational commitment?

Organizational commitment, along with job satisfaction, is one of the most commonly studied job attitudes within the psychological sciences and is often used to gauge how employees feel about their job. Research on organizational commitment has largely been a fragmented endeavor, with no clear consensus on what organizational commitment actually is or how it should be conceptualized. To date, there is not one definition that is regarded as the best, but there are some common themes that can be seen throughout the many definitions in existence. For example, most definitions refer to organizational commitment in terms …

De-Influencers And Social Media Trends, Misha Harneja, Emma Han Nov 2023

De-Influencers And Social Media Trends, Misha Harneja, Emma Han

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Influencers are content creators who collaborate with brands to promote a brand image or specific products to their followers.

In a new social media trend, influencers have also become “deinfluencers” who advocate against certain behaviors or products. Throughout this project, we aim to understand the new “trend” of “deinfluencers”.

The diversity of opinions and motivations for deinfluencers makes it challenging to uncover their motivations for creating this type of content. Our project combines secondary data research on popular press articles and primary data collection on Instagram and TikTok.

Job Satisfaction, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul Nov 2023

Job Satisfaction, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul

Umbrella Summaries

What is job satisfaction?

Job satisfaction is generally thought of as the degree to which an individual likes or dislikes their job (Spector, 1997). Along with organizational commitment, it is one of the most commonly studied job attitudes and is used as a way to gauge how employees feel about their jobs and as a reflection of how well the organization is functioning. Job satisfaction is commonly considered as either “a global feeling about the job or as a related constellation of attitudes about various aspects or facets of the job” (Spector, 1997, p. 2). Thus, job satisfaction is …

Covenant Violation And Operational Efficiency, Hui Liang James, Hongxia Wang, Zhimin Wang Nov 2023

Covenant Violation And Operational Efficiency, Hui Liang James, Hongxia Wang, Zhimin Wang

Finance and Economics

We examine the impact of covenant violation on corporate operational efficiency. Using an aggregate measure of operational efficiency developed by Demerjian et al. (Management Science, 58, 2012, 1229–1248), we provide strong empirical evidence that covenant violations hinder firms from achieving operational efficiency. Our finding is robust to alternative definitions of operational efficiency and various model specifications to address potential endogeneity issues. Further analyses show that lower operational efficiency is attributable to covenant-violating firms' under-investments in capital and labour. In addition, the negative effect of covenant violation on operational efficiency is not universally the same, and is less evident in violating …

East Tennessee State University is playing an important role on this front.

Earlier this month, the state of Tennessee announced that the 2023 Tennessee State Hazard Mitigation Plan had earned formal approval from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

“This report provides the most current understanding of risk …

Disentangling Trend Risk And Basis Risk With Functional Time Series, Yanxin Liu, Johnny Siu-Hang Li

Department of Finance: Faculty Publications

In recent multi-population stochastic mortality models, one critical scientific issue is the vague distinction between trend risk and population basis risk. In particular, the cross- and auto-correlations between the innovations of the latent factors representing the common trend and the population-specific trends are often assumed to be non-existent, although they are possibly statistically significant. While it is theoretically possible to capture such correlations by treating the latent factors as a vector time series, the resulting model would contain a large number of parameters, which may in turn lead to robustness problems. In this paper, we address these issues by the …

No Sex for Me: Female Influence and Power Through the Lens of Hrotsvitha

Madison Patoto

Male playwrights dominated the theatre world until Hrotsvitha, a German nun and playwright, broke the silence of The Dark Ages. She adapted the works of the ancient Roman playwright, Terence, with a more favorable depiction of faith and women. In the midst of a patriarchal world, Hrotsvitha explored the theme of sexuality through strong female characters who gained power and influence in a world that degraded them and considered them impotent. This essay dives into the main differences between Terence’s Roman secular views and Hrotsvitha’s …

Local Competition, Multimarket Contact, And Product Quality: Evidence From Internet Service Provision, Kyle Wilson Nov 2023

Local Competition, Multimarket Contact, And Product Quality: Evidence From Internet Service Provision, Kyle Wilson

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

I investigate the effect of competition on quality in the internet service provision industry: I examine both local competition within markets and multimarket contact among firms across markets. This industry offers an ideal setting, as quality is both objective and measurable. I use data from speedtest.net from 2008 to 2014 to estimate a reduced-form model of the effects of local competition and multimarket contact on realized consumer download speeds. I find that increased multimarket contact leads to decreased download speeds, which is consistent with the mutual forbearance hypothesis. I also find that duopolies lead to faster download speeds than do …
