Effects Of Firm Life Cycle On Matching And Accrual Quality, Ana Mariella Bandeira, José Elias Feres De Almeida Jan 2024

Effects Of Firm Life Cycle On Matching And Accrual Quality, Ana Mariella Bandeira, José Elias Feres De Almeida

School of Accountancy Faculty Publications

This study examines the effects of life cycle stages on the quality of revenue-expense matching and accruals of Brazilian public listed companies, and how matching affects accrual quality. Studies on the effects of firm life cycle stages on revenue-expense matching are still incipient. Furthermore, there is no prior study interconnecting the two conceptual and empirical models in a joint perspective. The study brings evidence that firm life cycle is a relevant factor in the analysis of the association between revenues and expenses and accruals with operating cash flows. This association, if properly carried out by firms, can benefit investors, analysts, …

Patience Is Key: The Time It Takes To See Benefits From Continuous Auditing, Marc Eulerich, Benjamin Fligge, Vanessa Lopez Kasper, David A. Wood Jan 2024

Patience Is Key: The Time It Takes To See Benefits From Continuous Auditing, Marc Eulerich, Benjamin Fligge, Vanessa Lopez Kasper, David A. Wood

Faculty Publications

Despite research showing numerous benefits to continuous auditing, uptake by internal audit functions has been quite slow. Using field data from a multinational company, we study two possible reasons for the slow uptake of continuous auditing—the time it takes for continuous auditing to result in measurable reductions in audit risks and that not every type of risk is equally likely to improve from continuous auditing. Results suggest it takes three years before observing significant risk reductions from implementing continuous auditing. We also find that the benefits of implementing continuous auditing vary by risk factor, ranging in improvement from 0 percent …

A Demonstration Of How Chatgpt Can Be Used In The Internal Auditing Process, Marc Eulerich, David A. Wood Jan 2024

A Demonstration Of How Chatgpt Can Be Used In The Internal Auditing Process, Marc Eulerich, David A. Wood

Faculty Publications

For the past several years, internal audit functions (IAFs) have been significantly increasing their digitization efforts to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the IAF. The introduction of ChatGPT has increased the potential for IAFs to have a more significant impact; however, there is little guidance on how ChatGPT can influence the day-to-day work of internal auditors. This paper demonstrates with specific examples how ChatGPT can be used to enhance all aspects of the audit process. While not comprehensive in nature, the detailed, illustrative examples should help internal auditors see actionable steps they can take to be more efficient and …

Tax Sentiment And Compliance: Evidence From Social Media, Andrew Belnap, Jacob Thornock, Kevin Standridge, Braden Williams Jan 2024

Tax Sentiment And Compliance: Evidence From Social Media, Andrew Belnap, Jacob Thornock, Kevin Standridge, Braden Williams

Faculty Publications

Motivations for voluntary tax compliance that fall outside of a standard, rational model can be intrinsic or extrinsic. We use social media rhetoric about taxes to create a measure of tax sentiment that reflects taxpayers’ extrinsic, behavioral motivations for voluntary compliance, and then examine the association between public tax sentiment and tax compliance. Our machinelearning based approach for measuring sentiment uses millions of tax-related tweets, which vary by time and geography. We find that tax sentiment is negatively associated with tax compliance. Our main findings and cross-sectional tests are consistent with the notion that paying one’s taxes is a way …

The Effect Of Economic Nexus On Sales Tax Avoidance And Retail Purchases, Zackery D. Fox, John R. Robinson, Stephen A. Stewart Jan 2024

The Effect Of Economic Nexus On Sales Tax Avoidance And Retail Purchases, Zackery D. Fox, John R. Robinson, Stephen A. Stewart

Faculty Publications

We investigate the impact of adopting economic nexus laws on local consumer consumption patterns. To do so, we focus on a natural experiment involving Washington State, which enacted economic nexus in October of 2018, and its neighboring state Oregon, which has no sales tax. Utilizing data from the Nielsen Consumer Panel survey, we estimate a difference-in-differences regression to test whether the imposition of sales tax on internet purchases in Washington led to an increase in brick and mortar (B&M) retail purchases relative to those in Oregon. We report evidence that consumers in Washington increased purchases at B&M retailers relative to …

The Intellectual Structure Of Audit Committee Research: A Bibliometric Analysis (1969 – 2020), Joel Behrend, Marc Eulerich, David A. Wood Jan 2024

The Intellectual Structure Of Audit Committee Research: A Bibliometric Analysis (1969 – 2020), Joel Behrend, Marc Eulerich, David A. Wood

Faculty Publications

The audit committee is a widely recognized mechanism of effective corporate governance. We advance prior literature reviews by using bibliometric analysis techniques that comprehensively process large bodies of bibliometric information. We base inferences on citation patterns of 1,173 articles to identify concepts that “shine through” within the scientific understanding of audit committees. Using content analysis, we then analyze these concepts and explore existing interrelationships. We document a declining influence of audit committee research, as well as a widening gap between the quantitative and qualitative research camps. While the former is mostly derivative in nature, the latter produces innovative insights on …

The Visible Hand Of Lawyers: Attorneys’ Selection, White-Collar Fraud, And Criminal Sentences, Jesus R. Jimenez-Andrade Jan 2024

The Visible Hand Of Lawyers: Attorneys’ Selection, White-Collar Fraud, And Criminal Sentences, Jesus R. Jimenez-Andrade

All Faculty Scholarship (Archived)

In the American white-collar fraud prosecution system, attorneys stand between fraudsters and criminal justice. Based on the theory of access literature, this manuscript explores whether attorneys’ selection moderates the relationship between severity of crime and criminal sentence. Collected data from 1,872 white-collar crimes between 2002 and 2020 prosecuted in San Antonio, Texas, test this hypothesis. Findings evidence that attorneys’ selection influences up to 10 percent of the criminal sentence (+,- 64 days). Socioeconomic control variables result in statistical significance, while demographics lack this condition. These findings suggest that fraudsters have incentives to maximize the defrauded amount to gain higher-quality legal …

The Economic Value Of Blockchain Applications: Early Evidence From Asset-Backed Securities, Xia Chen, Qiang Cheng, Ting Luo Jan 2024

The Economic Value Of Blockchain Applications: Early Evidence From Asset-Backed Securities, Xia Chen, Qiang Cheng, Ting Luo

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

In this paper, we evaluate the economic value of a blockchain application. In the context of asset-backed securities (ABS) issuance in China, where some ABS are issued with blockchain technology and others are not, we find that the use of blockchain significantly reduces the coupon yield at issuance. Compared with other ABS, those issued using blockchain technology experience a decrease of 31.4 basis points in the yield spread, which corresponds to a relative decrease of 13%. We further document that the effect of blockchain is more pronounced for ABS deals rated by less reputable credit rating agencies and agencies that …

Investor Reaction To Spacs' Voluntary Disclosures, Vincent Castellani, Karl A. Muller, K.J. Park Jan 2024

Investor Reaction To Spacs' Voluntary Disclosures, Vincent Castellani, Karl A. Muller, K.J. Park

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

SPACs are formed to combine with and provide a private firm public trading status and a capital infusion. Firms that enter the public market through a SPAC combination are believed to possess greater voluntary disclosure discretion than traditional IPOs as they obtain their public trading status through a merger. Consistent with regulators’ concerns, recent research finds that SPACs use this discretion opportunistically by issuing optimistic guidance. This study examines how investors respond to these disclosures. We find that optimistic projections increase retail purchasing, which is higher than that of institutional purchasing. Additionally, we find that investors partially see through the …

Common Ownership And Analyst Forecasts, Qiang Cheng, Shuqing Luo, Jinping Zhang Jan 2024

Common Ownership And Analyst Forecasts, Qiang Cheng, Shuqing Luo, Jinping Zhang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We examine the effect of the common ownership relation between brokerage houses and the firms covered by their analysts (referred to as co-owned brokerage houses, co-owned firms, and connected analysts, respectively) on analyst forecast performance. Common ownership can help the connected analysts have better access to co-owned firms, leading to higher-quality analyst research. However, common owners have incentives for higher valuation of the co-owned firms and thus can exert pressure on the connected analysts to issue optimistically biased research reports for these firms. We find that common ownership improves analyst forecast accuracy. This result is robust to a difference-in-differences design …

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

BackgroundIn December 2015, 195 countries around the world signed the Paris Agreement and pledged to work towards limiting global greenhouse gas emissions in order to limit the average global temperature increase to 1.5 °C above preindustrial levels. From a scientific perspective, the stabilisation of global warming under any target requires the achievement of a net-zero emissions economy (Matthews & Caldeira, 2008). In support of global investors looking to provide capital towards green solutions andSustainability disclosures – a means to what end?A significant body of literature has suggested that many of the voluntary sustainability disclosures of companies come from the need …

Monetary Policy, Macroprudential Policy, And Bank Risk-Taking Behaviour In The Indonesian Banking Industry, Cep J. Anwar, Nicholas Okot, Indra Suhendra, Dwi Indriyani, Ferry Jie Jan 2024

Monetary Policy, Macroprudential Policy, And Bank Risk-Taking Behaviour In The Indonesian Banking Industry, Cep J. Anwar, Nicholas Okot, Indra Suhendra, Dwi Indriyani, Ferry Jie

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

There is a growing consensus on the translation of monetary policy actions into changes in credit demand on account of changes in interest rates. The study investigates monetary policy, macroprudential policy, bank-specific and macroeconomic determinants of bank risk-taking from 2010–2022 in Indonesia. The study aims to address a gap in the literature because most previous studies have focused on advanced markets. First, three POLS and fixed effect models are estimated. However, the Durbin Wu-Hausman test indicated endogeneity issues with the estimated models. The second stage uses a system GMM estimation to investigate the impact of central bank rates and macroprudential …

You Fooled Me, So I'Ll Tell You About Myself! Personnel-Related Brand Betrayal Experiences And Disclosure Of Personal Information, Teck M. Tan, Jari Salo, Jaakko Aspara

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Past research has extensively studied the negative effects of brand betrayals on consumer attitudes, but largely ignored their potential positive consequences. Also, while previous research has focused on betrayals made by the brand itself, it has paid less attention to betrayals by the brand's personnel. This paper focuses on one potentially important positive consequence of brand personnel betrayal experiences (a consumer's feeling of being betrayed by the brand staff members): the increased willingness of consumers to share personal insights and information with the brand after experiencing a brand personnel betrayal. A field data set and two online experiments show that …

When Corporate Culture Matters: The Case Of Stakeholder Violations, Rashid Zaman Jan 2024

When Corporate Culture Matters: The Case Of Stakeholder Violations, Rashid Zaman

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This study examines whether and how a strong corporate culture influences stakeholder violations. Using a longitudinal sample of monetary penalties imposed on US-listed firms for stakeholder violations, I find evidence that a strong corporate culture is significantly and negatively associated with such violations. This outcome remains robust to a series of robustness and endogeneity tests, including the application of the generalized method of moments (GMM), entropy balancing, and propensity score matching (PSM) estimation. The channel analysis evidence implies that information asymmetry is a possible mechanism through which a strong corporate culture is associated with stakeholder violations. A cross-sectional analysis demonstrates …

Board Demographic, Structural Diversity, And Eco-Innovation: International Evidence, Rashid Zaman, Kaveh Asiaei, Muhammad Nadeem, Ihtisham Malik, Muhammad Arif

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Research question/issue: We examine whether and how board diversity, measured by demographics (i.e., board gender, cultural diversity, tenure, social capital, expertise, and age) and structural diversity (i.e., board independence, size, board seat accumulation-chair, board compensation, and board meeting frequency), influence corporate eco-innovation. Research findings/insights: Utilizing a global sample of publicly listed companies for the period 2004–2019, we find that a one-standard deviation increase in demographic and structural diversity translates into 4.66% and 7.11% higher corporate eco-innovation, respectively. Furthermore, we discover that demographic and structural diversity promotes eco-innovation by offsetting the negative effects of political risk. In an additional analysis, we …

Exploring The Social Impact Of The Short-Stay Market (Ssm) In Regional Areas: An Empirical Study, Emeka Ndaguba, Kerry Brown, Dora Marinova, Uma Jogulu Jan 2024

Exploring The Social Impact Of The Short-Stay Market (Ssm) In Regional Areas: An Empirical Study, Emeka Ndaguba, Kerry Brown, Dora Marinova, Uma Jogulu

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The discourse on microentrepreneurs and their involvement in the short stay market (SSM) was non-existent until 2008. While several concepts and constructs have been developed and empirically tested since 2009, many of them relate to economics, leaving the social, cultural, and environmental factors underdeveloped. Thus, this study aimed to fill the gap and identify and assess the social impact of the short-stay market (SSM) in a regional area. The study included 16 face-to-face interview sessions conducted with 18 participants, and the Leximancer software was employed to analyse the data. The study revealed that the social impact on SSM is not …

Accounting-Based Variables As An Early Warning Indicator Of Financial Distress In Crisis And Non-Crisis Periods, Robert J. Powell, Dung V. Dinh, Nam T. Vu, Duc H. Vo

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Financial integration in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region is a key focus of the ASEAN Economic Community. Whereas many studies focus on modelling corporate default, this paper identifies early warning indicators of financial distress before a default, using multiple discriminant analysis (MDA) models with a sample of listed and delisted companies in the ASEAN region. The analysis examines 720 companies in 10 different industries across six ASEAN countries from 1997 to 2016. The study constructs individual models for each country as well as an overall model for the entire region, using both in-sample and out-of-sample approaches. This …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Global competition has forced companies, including small and medium enterprises (SMEs), to improve their competitive advantage. Supply chain management practices are the ways to improve the competitive advantage, particularly in the global competition context. However, there is still doubt SMEs can compete globally, considering they face limited resources, skilled workforce, and business networks. Therefore, this study aims to examine the influence of supply chain management practices, covering cross-functional integration, partnership, responsiveness, and resilience. Moreover, this study has examined which practices dominate in improving competitive advantage. The quantitative study involved 445 SMEs located in East Java, Indonesia. The respondents are supervisors …
