Beneficial Owner Reporting: Our Role As Trusted Advisor, Shelby Follis, Michelle Freeman

ETSU Faculty Works

Article Excerpt: The Anti-Money Laundering Act of 2020, enacted on Jan. 1, 2021, contained the first-ever federal requirement for certain legal entities to identify and report their beneficial owners, also known as the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA). The CTA was designed to “prevent wrongdoers from exploiting United States corporations and limited liability companies for criminal gain, to assist law enforcement in detecting, preventing, and punishing terrorism, money laundering, and other misconduct.” As trusted advisors, CPAs should consider informing clients of the new reporting requirements and advise them on the best option to pursue, even if they do not file the …

Intrafirm Knowledge Sharing In The Investment Research Industry, Artur Hugon, An-Ping Lin, Stanimir Markov Apr 2024

Intrafirm Knowledge Sharing In The Investment Research Industry, Artur Hugon, An-Ping Lin, Stanimir Markov

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We study interdepartment knowledge sharing in an investment research setting where the benefits are potentially significant for the brokerage and the capital market, but so are the frictions impeding it. Using hand-collected data on equity analyst access to in-house debt research expertise, we find significant benefits to equity analysts in the form of improved ability to forecast cash flows and to anticipate credit rating downgrades. Moreover, we find evidence that access to management and research expertise underlie in-house debt analysts' capacity to generate information beneficial to equity analysts. Finally, these benefits exist only in the presence of a collaborative brokerage …

Impact Of Government Outsourcing Contracts On High-Tech Vendors: An Empirical Study, Yi Dong, Nan Hu, Yonghua Ji, Chenkai Ni, Jing Xie Apr 2024

Impact Of Government Outsourcing Contracts On High-Tech Vendors: An Empirical Study, Yi Dong, Nan Hu, Yonghua Ji, Chenkai Ni, Jing Xie

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Outsourcing is an important strategic decision of high-tech firms. However, while the research has extensively studied the implications of outsourcing to high-tech clients, its impact on high-tech vendors remains underexplored. This study empirically estimates the impact of government outsourcing contracts on high-tech vendors. Employing the earnings-return analyses framework, we find that, for high-tech vendors engaged in government outsourcing contracts, the stock market places a higher value on each unit of unexpected earnings compared to other firms. Additionally, this impact becomes stronger for contracts with longer terms, for contracts outsourced by the U.S. government or by countries with better political and …

Fringe Lending: The Case For A National Minimum Standard, Don Loos Apr 2024

Fringe Lending: The Case For A National Minimum Standard, Don Loos

Senior Honors Theses

In the American financial sector, the liberalization of usury laws and legal complexity has allowed for controversial fringe financial products to become widely available. Payday loans, car title loans, and short-term, high-interest installment loans, also referred to as fringe loans, have often been classified as “predatory” and unconscionable. The central question in this controversy is whether increased regulation of fringe loans, or their complete prohibition, is effective to protect consumers from a harmful cycle of debt, or whether regulation will cause more harm than good. Since state legislation is ineffective to limit the negative externalities associated with fringe loans, a …

Humanitarian Aid Worker Retention: Is General Motivation Theory Enough?, Gabriella Lee Apr 2024

Humanitarian Aid Worker Retention: Is General Motivation Theory Enough?, Gabriella Lee

Senior Honors Theses

In the socially impactful realm of humanitarian business, job dissatisfaction has led to high turnover and low retention, causing many organizations to struggle and sometimes fail. To increase motivation and satisfaction, the differences between general motivation theories and common humanitarian motivations should be analyzed. These analyses can then be applied to increase retention. While most general motivation theories like Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs point to internal or personal needs being met, humanitarian employees are mainly motivated altruistically. Therefore, this research will demonstrate that altruistic motivations have a greater role in humanitarian retention than traditional motivation theories. Existing human resource policies …

Money Laundering In The United States: A Review Of Current Regulations And Threats, Grace Hutchinson Apr 2024

Money Laundering In The United States: A Review Of Current Regulations And Threats, Grace Hutchinson

Senior Honors Theses

Money laundering is the act of hiding illegally obtained money in the financial system. There are three stages of money laundering: placing, layering, and integration. In the United States, the Bank Secrecy Act, monitored by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), requires companies to establish an anti-money laundering (AML) compliance program and to exercise customer due diligence as preventative measures. The US government can detect money laundering through Suspicious Activity Reports, Currency Transaction Reports, and whistleblower tips. However, AML threats and vulnerabilities such as Professional Money Launderers, cryptocurrency, and the global art market allow criminals to continue to launder money …

Information Systems Faculty Publications

Enterprises leverage emerging ITs like big data analytics, the Internet of Things, and blockchain to enhance the resilience of their supply chains in volatile environments. Nevertheless, the precise mechanisms through which these technologies mitigate supply chain vulnerability remain elusive. This study identifies nine emerging ITs and fourteen mitigating factors that contribute to reducing supply chain vulnerability, drawing from both literature and interviews. Employing a novel DEMATEL-ISM approach, it unveils multi-stage impact pathways through which these technologies decrease supply chain vulnerability based on the degrees of their interactions. Utilizing grounded theory methodology, the study delves into the significance of individual factors …

Networking Fast And Slow: The Role Of Speed In Tie Formation, Julia Brennecke, Gokhan Ertug, Tom Elfring Apr 2024

Networking Fast And Slow: The Role Of Speed In Tie Formation, Julia Brennecke, Gokhan Ertug, Tom Elfring

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Growing interest in network dynamics has led to insights about patterns of network change, drivers of tie formation, and the temporal unfolding of the consequences of networks. To this area of inquiry, we introduce networking speed – the time it takes for individuals to form a network tie – as an important but so far largely overlooked aspect. We develop a theory of networking speed that explains how different catalysts enable professionals to introduce variation into the speed with which they form interpersonal network ties. We discuss how such variation in the speed with which ties have been formed influences …

"Just Beat It" Do Firms Reclassify Costs To Avoid The Base Erosion And Anti-Abuse Tax (Beat) Of The Tcja?, Stacie O. Laplante, Christina M. Lewellen, Daniel P. Pynch, David M. P. Samuel Apr 2024

"Just Beat It" Do Firms Reclassify Costs To Avoid The Base Erosion And Anti-Abuse Tax (Beat) Of The Tcja?, Stacie O. Laplante, Christina M. Lewellen, Daniel P. Pynch, David M. P. Samuel

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This study examines whether multinational corporations (MNCs) reclassify related-party payments to avoid the new base erosion and anti-abuse tax (BEAT). The Tax Cuts & Jobs Act of 2017 included the BEAT to combat income shifting from the U.S. to foreign entities. An exclusion in the tax law provides MNCs an incentive to reclassify related-party payments as cost of goods sold. We use a triple-difference design that leverages the BEAT filing threshold of $500 million in revenue and the parent company’s location to document increases in the unconsolidated sales of foreign subsidiaries of MNCs subject to BEAT relative foreign subsidiaries of …

The Chemistry Between Us: Illuminating Complementarity Patterns In Interpersonal Role Play Assessment Via Moment-To-Moment Analyses, Christoph N. Herde, Filip Lievens Apr 2024

The Chemistry Between Us: Illuminating Complementarity Patterns In Interpersonal Role Play Assessment Via Moment-To-Moment Analyses, Christoph N. Herde, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In assessment and selection, organizations often include interpersonal interactions because they provide insights into candidates’ interpersonal skills. These skills are then typically assessed via one-shot, retrospective assessor ratings. Unfortunately, the assessment of interpersonal skills at such a trait-like level fails to capture the richness of how the interaction unfolds at the behavioral exchange level within a role-play assessment. This study uses the lens of interpersonal complementarity theory to advance our understanding of interpersonal dynamics in role-play assessment and their effects on assessor ratings. Ninety-six MBA students participated in four different flash role-plays as part of diagnosing their strengths and weaknesses. …

In June 2008, the U.S.-based website Glassdoor.com began posting anonymous company reviews and salary data from current and former employees of various organizations. Doing so not only brought to the world information that had hitherto been restricted to private circles, it spontaneously prompted some organizations to alter their workplace practices (Dineen & Allen, 2016; Dube & Zhu, 2021). At the same time, Glassdoor’s very activities gave rise to a completely new source of data for exploring a wealth of management and organizational phenomena (e.g., Bermiss & McDonald, 2018; Rhee, 2024). As this example illustrates, new data sources can not only …

Why Did Retail Liquidity Programs Fail?, Thomas Ernst, Chester Spatt, Jian Sun Apr 2024

Why Did Retail Liquidity Programs Fail?, Thomas Ernst, Chester Spatt, Jian Sun

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Five U.S. exchanges have Retail Liquidity Programs, which operate a limit order book only accessible to market orders from retail traders. In theory, this allows competition for segmented retail order flow. In practice, volumes executed in RLPs have been very low, and obtain prices inferior to those offered by off-exchange wholesalers. We trace this failure to three distinct issues: (1) cream-skimming by wholesalers, so that ``retail'' trades in RLPs carry high adverse selection risk, (2) an inability by RLPs to display quotes without pre-trade transparency of available prices, and (3) a lack of trade-through protection, with wholesalers executing trades at …

Sukuk Liquidity And Creditworthiness During Covid-19, Mariya Gubareva, Tatiana Sokolova, Zaghum Umar, Xuan Vinh Vo Apr 2024

Sukuk Liquidity And Creditworthiness During Covid-19, Mariya Gubareva, Tatiana Sokolova, Zaghum Umar, Xuan Vinh Vo

All Works

This paper presents the empirical liquidity study of Islamic fixed-income securities during 2020-2021. Using bid-ask and Z-spread metrics we demonstrate that the apogee of both, liquidity and credit stresses in international sukuk market is reached in early April 2020. Contrasting results for non-Islamic fixed-income instruments, we show that sukuk credit spreads recover to pre-Covid levels faster than their bid-ask spreads. However, we find that the share of liquidity component in the yield spread of sukuks always remains below 1%, revealing that Covid-19 does not worsen in relative terms the economic attractiveness of this financing channel for Shariah-concerned entities and investors.

Supply Chain Coordination In A Dual Sourcing System Under The Tailored Base-Surge Policy, Kilani Ghoudi, Younes Hamdouch, Youssef Boulaksil, Sadeque Hamdan Apr 2024

Supply Chain Coordination In A Dual Sourcing System Under The Tailored Base-Surge Policy, Kilani Ghoudi, Younes Hamdouch, Youssef Boulaksil, Sadeque Hamdan

All Works

In this paper, we study the coordination of a dual sourcing supply chain comprising a buyer and two suppliers: a regular and an expedited one. The suppliers differ in lead time and cost, with the expedited supplier offering a shorter lead time at a higher cost than the regular supplier. The buyer uses the Tailored Base-Surge inventory policy, ordering every period a fixed quantity from the regular supplier and using the expedited supplier to meet any excess demand. We employ a novel perspective by assuming that each of the three firms is an independent party optimizing its profit function. We …

Efficiency And Sustainability Of Bond Market: Evidence From Aftermarket Trading Of Us Corporate Bond Offerings, Lisa (Zongfei) Yang, Choo Yong, Jeremy Goh Apr 2024

Efficiency And Sustainability Of Bond Market: Evidence From Aftermarket Trading Of Us Corporate Bond Offerings, Lisa (Zongfei) Yang, Choo Yong, Jeremy Goh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We find that for bond offerings that are non-self-marketed, there is a significantly larger proportion of institutional-sized sell trades than buy. In stark contrast, for self-marketed offerings by underwriters, immediate post-offer trading is characterized by a larger proportion of institutional-sized buy trades than sell. We also find evidence suggesting that retail investors, who are initially shut out of the offering deals, buy bonds in the secondary market at a higher price. Our evidence suggests that certain institutional investors receiving allocations of non-self-marketed offerings flip them for a quick profit. The systematic disparity in aftermarket trading immediately following self-marketed versus non-self-marketed …

Designing Pareto-Optimal Selection Systems For Multiple Minority Subgroups And Multiple Criteria, Wilfried De Corte, Paul R. Sackett, Filip Lievens Apr 2024

Designing Pareto-Optimal Selection Systems For Multiple Minority Subgroups And Multiple Criteria, Wilfried De Corte, Paul R. Sackett, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Currently used Pareto-optimal (PO) approaches for balancing diversity and validity goals in selection can deal only with one minority group and one criterion. These are key limitations because the workplace and society at large are getting increasingly diverse and because selection system designers often have interest in multiple criteria. Therefore, the article extends existing methods for designing PO selection systems to situations involving multiple criteria and multiple minority groups (i.e., multiobjective PO selection systems). We first present a hybrid multiobjective PO approach for computing selection systems that are PO with respect to (a) a set of quality objectives (i.e., criteria) …

The More The Merrier: How Psychological Standing And Work Group Size Explain Managers' Willingness To Communicate About Unethical Conduct In Their Work Group, Burak Oc, Maryam Kouchaki Apr 2024

The More The Merrier: How Psychological Standing And Work Group Size Explain Managers' Willingness To Communicate About Unethical Conduct In Their Work Group, Burak Oc, Maryam Kouchaki

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Business ethics research has long examined the dichotomy between remaining silent or reporting ethical misconduct to a third party. Little is known, however, about ethical conversations within a work group after observing misconduct. Specifically, we do not know how many members of their work group individuals choose to communicate with. These conversations could have important implications for creating an ethical workplace. We propose that psychological standing is an important driver of individuals' decisions not to remain silent and to instead raise moral concerns with a greater number of others in their work group. In addition, integrating existing work on structural …

The Status Of Status Research: A Review Of The Types, Functions, Levels And Audiences, Matteo Prato, Gokhan Ertug, Fabrizio Castellucci, Tengjian Zou Apr 2024

The Status Of Status Research: A Review Of The Types, Functions, Levels And Audiences, Matteo Prato, Gokhan Ertug, Fabrizio Castellucci, Tengjian Zou

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Our review of 154 articles published over the last decade portrays an evolution of status research. This body of literature has transitioned from viewing status as a monolithic construct to appreciating its inherently multidimensional nature, characterized by diverse types, functions, levels, and audience structures. Although this shift has expanded our knowledge, it has also introduced increased complexity and fragmentation. To systematize this scattered work on a multifaceted view of status, we develop a comprehensive framework that integrates the diverse research findings. For each constituent part of this framework, we review key themes and insights in the literature and outline future …

Siphoned Apart: A Portfolio Perspective On Order Flow Segmentation, Markus Baldauf, Joshua Mollner, Bart Zhou Yueshen Apr 2024

Siphoned Apart: A Portfolio Perspective On Order Flow Segmentation, Markus Baldauf, Joshua Mollner, Bart Zhou Yueshen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We study liquidity supply in fragmented markets. Market makers intermediate heterogeneous order flows, trading off spread revenue against inventory costs. Applying our model to payment for order flow (PFOF), we demonstrate that portfolio-based considerations of inventory management incentivize market makers to segment retail orders by siphoning them off-exchange. Banning order flow segmentation reduces total welfare, can make trading more costly for all investors, and can resolve a prisoner's dilemma among market makers. These results differentiate our inventory-based model from the existing information-based theories of PFOF.

The Economic And Enviromental Benefits Of Railroad Electrification In The United States, Jeremiah Bishop Apr 2024

The Economic And Enviromental Benefits Of Railroad Electrification In The United States, Jeremiah Bishop

Sustainable Supply Chain Management

The United States, despite being a global leader in various sectors, lags in railroad electrification compared to other major countries. This paper explores the history, benefits, and obstacles associated with transitioning from diesel-electric to electrified railroads for Class I freight services. Historically, electrification in the U.S. was limited due to high capital costs and the economic advantages of diesel-electric locomotives. However, rising environmental concerns and stringent EPA emission regulations are pushing for a reevaluation of this stance. Electrified railroads offer significant economic benefits, including lower operating and maintenance costs, job creation, and long-term sustainability. Environmentally, electrification could drastically reduce greenhouse …

An Integrative Review Of Management Research On Caste: Broadening Our Horizons, Hari Bapuji, Snehanjali Chrispal, Pardeep Singh Attri, Gokhan Ertug, Vivek Soundararajan Apr 2024

An Integrative Review Of Management Research On Caste: Broadening Our Horizons, Hari Bapuji, Snehanjali Chrispal, Pardeep Singh Attri, Gokhan Ertug, Vivek Soundararajan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Even though management research on caste is growing, it is not yet on a clear trajectory to realize its vast potential due to varying terminology and framing of caste, the limited incorporation of directly relevant work from proximate disciplines, and the narrow and selective usage of the attributes of caste. To remove these obstacles, we review 259 scholarly works on caste (216 articles and 43 books and research reports) and develop an integrative framework to i) clarify the contemporary manifestations of caste as being a graded hierarchy, an inherited membership, and a set of socially enforced practices, and ii) summarize …

Covid-19 And Management Scholarship: Lessons For Conducting Impactful Research, Gerard George, Gokhan Ertug, Jonathan P. Doh, Johanna Mair, Ajnesh Prasad

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The COVID-19 pandemic provided an opportunity for management scholars to address large-scale and complex societal problems and strive for greater practical and policy impact. A brief overview of the most-cited work on COVID-19 reveals that, compared with their counterparts in other disciplines, leading management journals and professional associations lagged in providing a platform for high-impact research on COVID-19. To help management research play a more active role in responding to similar global challenges in the future, we propose an integrative framework that emphasizes a phenomenon’s impact, the conditions that the phenomenon creates at multiple levels, and the responses of actors …
