Chief Sustainability Officer’S Role Centrality And Corporate Sustainability Performance, Taiwo Abraham, Gabriel Owusu, Xuan Wang
Chief Sustainability Officer’S Role Centrality And Corporate Sustainability Performance, Taiwo Abraham, Gabriel Owusu, Xuan Wang
Management Faculty Publications
Corporate Sustainability Performance (CSP) has gained substantial attention as firms recognize its potential impact on competitive advantage. In response, there has been a significant increase in the appointment of Chief Sustainability Officers (CSOs) tasked with managing sustainability performance and integrating systemic sustainability initiatives for business growth. In this research, we draw upon upper echelon theory and social network theory to argue that merely having a CSO does not enhance CSP. However, the centrality of CSO within organizational networks significantly augments CSP. Further, leveraging literature from institutional theory and stakeholder theory, we provide a fresh perspective on how organizations should approach …

Beyond the 2007–2008 financial crisis, the collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank and the acquisition of Credit Suisse by the Swiss investment bank UBS Group AG in 2023 have brought fresh attention to the need for new regulatory capital, liquidity risk management, and leverage requirements. To meet tightened capital requirements, banks have to increase their capital ratios either by increasing equity or by decreasing risk-weighted assets. Both options lead to banks’ performance deterioration. One remedy for banks to recover is raising their lending spread. A critical question is how much the lending spread should be increased to offset the drop …

Bunching In Real-Estate Markets: Regulated Building Heights In New York City, Jan K. Brueckner, David Leather, Michael Zerecero
Business Faculty Articles and Research
This paper presents a real-estate application of the bunching methodology widely used in other areas of applied microeconomics. The focus is on regulated building heights in New York City, where developers can exceed a parcel’s regulated height by incurring additional costs. Using the bunching methodology, we estimate the magnitude of these extra costs, with the results showing a modest increase in the marginal cost of floor space beyond the regulated building height. We use these estimates to predict the additional floor space that would be created by complete removal of building-height regulation in NYC. While this last exercise is circumscribed …

Unpaid work, including childcare, eldercare, housework, and other tasks, is vitally important to the foundations of strong families, communities, and nations; in fact, such domestic work has been called “the work that makes all other work possible.”1 According to Oxfam, the monetary value of women’s unpaid work is estimated to be $10.8 trillion each year,2 and women worldwide spend a significantly larger portion of time than men performing this critical work.3 This happens for many reasons, including personal values and choices, cultural and social norms, unconscious biases, and specific economic and employment considerations. Researchers and thought leaders …

Social innovation and social enterprise are often supposed as methodological solutions to address multifaceted socio-economic problems, due to the sharing of ideas and their involvement of stakeholders from different sectors. This cooperative treatise (Ziegler in Innov Eur J Soc Sci Res 30:388–405, 2017) is striking to legislators across the political gamut. This research is therefore positioned within the broader literature on social innovation and its policy relevance; even though social innovation is not a novel thought, the application of social innovation as a policy idea and its part in relation to the restructuring of the prevailing welfare establishment has gained …

Barley Grass And Its Management In Crops, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Grains and other field crops factsheets
Barley grass is a common name for Hordeum glaucum and H. leporinum. Barley grass is a major crop weeds species because the seed is readily dispersed, it is renowned for rapidly germinating in autumn, and post-emergent herbicide control options are limited. It can also act as an alternate host for cereal diseases and can develop resistance to herbicides.
The rapid germination of the species after rainfall gives barley grass the potential to act as a green bridge for cereal root rot diseases

Mega-Influencers And Brand Dynamics: Shaping Attitudes Toward Leading And Challenger Brandsthrough Electronic Word Of Mouth, Riccardo Rialto, Lamberto Zollo, Kacy Kim, Sukki Yoon
Mathematics and Economics Faculty Journal Articles
The aim of this paper is to explore how mega‐influencers' electronic word of mouth (eWOM) messages on social media influence consumers' brand attitudes in duopolistic markets. Through three experimental studies, we observe that when mega‐ influencers send positive (vs. negative) eWOM messages about a leading brand, followers form positive (vs. negative) brand attitudes, but these effects fail to occur when influencers back challenger brands. The findings are consistent across three duopolistic market rivals (Apple vs. Samsung; UPS vs. FedEx; Nike vs. Adidas), three social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and X), and four mega‐influencers (Marques Brownlee, Gary Vaynerchuk, Kanye West, and …

This study investigates the role of free cash flows and (cross-sectional and time-series) price momentum in predicting future stock returns. Past returns and free cash flows each positively predict future stock returns after controlling for the other, suggesting that cash flows and momentum both contain valuable and distinctive information about future stock returns. A strategy of buying past winners with high free cash flows and shorting past losers with low free cash flows significantly outperforms the traditional momentum trading strategy. The enhanced performance is not sensitive to investor sentiment, time variations, or transaction costs. Further analysis shows that the incremental …

Voice-based artificial intelligence, or voice AI, is becoming more prevalent in consumers' daily transactions. Utilizing the perception-action model of empathy, this study aims to understand the holistic nature of empathetic responses in voice AI and how this technology, when rendered empathetic, can affect consumers' attention to auditory information (perceived attention) and auditory information exploration, by reaching expected outcomes of the interactive process, consumer satisfaction, and consumers' willingness to use voice AI. The results of two pretests and two experiments explain the effect of empathetic response in voice AI on consumers' perceived attention and its subsequent effect on consumers' auditory information …

Exploring Producers' Willingness To Pay For Ecosystem Services: Three Essays On Soil Health, Location Preferences, And Cover Crop Adoption, Kaouter Essakkat
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This dissertation comprises three essays: one assessing Midwest producers' willingness-to-pay (WTP) for soil health-enhancing ecosystem services (ES), another examining the impact of policy implementation locations on WTP, and a third identifying factors influencing producers' adoption of cover crops (CC).
The first essay pioneers the understanding of agricultural producers’ valuation of soil health-associated ES amid growing concerns of soil degradation due to agricultural intensification. Using a discrete choice experiment, this study assesses producers’ WTP for a policy that incentivizes ES provision, specifically improved water quality, carbon sequestration, and enhanced crop yield. Surveying producers across Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska, our results show …
