Who Owns The Knowledge? The Commodification Of Academic Research, Maria Petrescu, Anjala S. Krishen Sep 2024

Who Owns The Knowledge? The Commodification Of Academic Research, Maria Petrescu, Anjala S. Krishen

Publications

The increasing commodification of academic research and the reliance on flawed impact metrics have started to show the need to reassess how research is conducted, evaluated, and disseminated. In contemporary marketing (analytics) research, the search for relevance and rigor is becoming essential, with the goal being that studies not only meet high standards of academic rigor but also remain ethically sound, relevant to societal needs, and impactful. These key criteria all drive research quality far before the academy considers profitability.

Potential Response Of Mexican Consumers To A Ban On Genetically Modified Maize Imports, Brandon R. Mcfadden, Lawton Nalley, Alvaro Durand-Morat, Wei Yang, Katie Loethen Sep 2024

Potential Response Of Mexican Consumers To A Ban On Genetically Modified Maize Imports, Brandon R. Mcfadden, Lawton Nalley, Alvaro Durand-Morat, Wei Yang, Katie Loethen

Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mexico enacted a decree to ban the sale of genetically modified (GM) maize seed and maize for human consumption. Maize is particularly important to the average diet in Mexico as it is the main feed for the primary source of protein (poultry) and the main ingredient for the primary source of calories (corn tortillas). This study aimed to assess consumer awareness of the decree, support for the decree, and sensitivity of support given possible economic outcomes related to the decree. Additionally, we estimate the premiums consumers were willing to pay (WTP) for non-GM products relative to GM products (i.e., chicken …

Estimating Prevented Planting Coverage Factor Variation, Christopher N. Boyer, Eunchun Park, Chad Hellwinckel, S. Aaron Smith, William Maples, Gabriela Perez-Quesada Sep 2024

Estimating Prevented Planting Coverage Factor Variation, Christopher N. Boyer, Eunchun Park, Chad Hellwinckel, S. Aaron Smith, William Maples, Gabriela Perez-Quesada

Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Faculty Publications and Presentations

Prevented planting payments reimburse crop producers for losses from not being able to plant. These payments provide critical protection to producers; however, these payments, which are determined using a nationwide, crop-specific coverage factor, have been questioned to induce moral hazard. Depending on the region and crop insurance coverage, payments from this provision exceed producers’ losses. This paper estimates the prevented planting coverage factor by coverage level and region that would equitably reimburse corn and soybean producers for their losses. We find the prevented planting coverage factor has significant variation across coverage levels and location within our study region. The prevented …

How Environmental Accidents Influence Consumer ‘Green’ Behavior: An Econometric Analysis, Rick Hardcopf, Suvrat Dhanorkar Sep 2024

How Environmental Accidents Influence Consumer ‘Green’ Behavior: An Econometric Analysis, Rick Hardcopf, Suvrat Dhanorkar

Management Faculty Publications

Environmental accidents (EAs) are firm operational failures that harm human health, the natural environment, and offending firms. We propose they also initiate a subtle form of activism among consumers living near the accident by stimulating increased ‘green’ behavior. Using annual county-level data in California from 2000-2015, we show that following an EA, consumers reduce the trash/garbage they generate and the energy they consume. The impact is long-lasting and stronger when EAs are more severe and when consumers have pro-environmental beliefs, ready access to information, and convenient access to ‘green’ options, such as recycling. Since affected consumers may also refuse to …

The Status Of Women Leaders In Government – Utah Counties: A 2024 Update, April Townsend, Susan R. Madsen Sep 2024

The Status Of Women Leaders In Government – Utah Counties: A 2024 Update, April Townsend, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Organizations increasingly thrive when both men and women hold leadership roles and work together. This is true not only in Utah’s businesses, but also its government organizations, such as state legislatures, city councils, and state and local bureaucracies.1

American democracy is based on the concept of representation.2 Governments mirror this idea by encouraging agencies to employ a workforce that shares the demographic characteristics of the community it serves.3 In fact, the presence of a diverse public workforce “implies equal access to government positions promoting empowerment and connection with government in diverse communities, [and] can also signal the …

Sustainable Value Co-Creation Between Financial Services Firms And Microenterprise Customers: Is Digital The Missing Link?, Carmina Cavazos, Esi A. Elliot, Rita Abban

International Business and Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications

This paper investigates how financial services providers (FSPs) can engage in value cocreation with their microenterprise customers (CMEs) for sustainable value cocreation. The potential of digital for value cocreation in inter-firm relationships is relevant because digital technologies such as mobile phone and internet platforms are rapidly transforming the business landscape. The research question addressed is how do financial services firms and microenterprises engage in sustainable value co-creation? It is a qualitative study (using phenomenological interviews and observations) of financial service providers (FSPs) and their microenterprise customers (CMEs) in Ghana. The study builds on the model of Selander et al., (2010) …

Pooling And Winsorizing Machine Learning Forecasts To Predict Stock Returns With High-Dimensional Data, Erik Mekelburg, Jack Strauss Sep 2024

Pooling And Winsorizing Machine Learning Forecasts To Predict Stock Returns With High-Dimensional Data, Erik Mekelburg, Jack Strauss

Finance: Faculty Scholarship

We evaluate US market return predictability using a novel data set of several hundred ag- gregated firm-level characteristics. We apply LASSO, Elastic Net, Random Forest, Neural Net, Extreme Gradient Boosting, and Light Gradient Boosting Machine methods and find these models experience large prediction errors that lead to forecast failures. However, winsorizing and pooling machine learning model forecasts provides consistent out-of-sample predictability. To assess robustness, we apply machine learning methods to high-dimensional data for Canada, China, Germany and the UK as well as the Goyal-Welch data. All machine learning models we consider, except for the ensemble pooled methods, fail to significantly …

100% Great Lake Fish: Ontario Supply Chain Analysis. Commissioned By The Conference Of Great Lakes And St. Lawrence Governors And Premiers., Eric Molnar, Paul Van Der Verf, Jury Gualandris, Conference Of Great Lakes And St. Lawrence Governors And Premiers

Business Publications

Southern Ontario offers valuable insights into the supply chain dynamics of fish harvesting and processing across the Great Lakes region. This report analyzes the existing supply of raw materials produced by fish processing plants and evaluates the feasibility of integrating these resources into other markets. This synthesized report compiles and integrates information from various databases. The analysis examines the quantities and rhythms of fish components from Walleye and Yellow Perch. The findings reveal that combining components from the two species can mitigate supply volatility throughout the year. Specifically, the analysis shows that the standard deviation of the weekly proportion of …
