Subway, Collaborative Matching, And Innovation, Yumi Koh, Li Jing, Jianhuan Xu Mar 2025

Subway, Collaborative Matching, And Innovation, Yumi Koh, Li Jing, Jianhuan Xu

Research Collection School Of Economics

Using rapid expansion of the Beijing subway from 2000 to 2018, we analyze its impact on collaborative matches in innovations. We find that an hour reduction in travel time between a pair of locations in Beijing brought 14.85% to 37.69% increase in collaborated patents. Far-apart location pairs were more affected, and the local average causal response is approximately 34.92% to 82.29%. The effect is mainly driven by increased matches among highly productive innovators. The entry of new innovators, relocation of existing innovators, and collaborations among low-productive innovators also contribute to the increase in collaborative matches, especially in the long run.

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Social commerce has evolved into a mainstream channel for marketers and businesses for selling products online. However, consumers in many developing economies have yet to fully adopt social commerce technology. This research, therefore, aims to develop and empirically validate a conceptual model for understanding the factors influencing consumer adoption of social commerce in Bangladesh using an adapted and extended version of the Meta-UTAUT model. Analysis was undertaken to determine the appropriateness of external constructs such as trust, social support, anxiety, grievance redressal, innovativeness, and continuous participation intention. This research collected data from 402 social commerce users from Bangladesh to test …

The Impact Of Individual Definitions Of Healthcare Quality On The Healthcare Industry And Organizations In The Southeastern United States, Phillip Dale Mcgarrah Jr. Feb 2025

The Impact Of Individual Definitions Of Healthcare Quality On The Healthcare Industry And Organizations In The Southeastern United States, Phillip Dale Mcgarrah Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative case study using a flexible design was to determine if there was a lack of a consensus stakeholder accepted definition of healthcare quality, what were the individual definitions of healthcare quality, and the potential impact on healthcare organizations in the southeastern United States. Exploration of the literature yielded numerous studies that identified specific healthcare quality attributes favored by specific industry members but that none of those definitions were shared between stakeholders. Those studies, however, did not consider the entirety of the stakeholders in their identification of healthcare quality defining attributes nor reasons for differences or …

Retention Of Volunteer Firefighters In A Combination Department, Timothy J. Tieperman

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This researcher embarked on a doctoral journey to study an existential problem impacting the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters in suburban Philadelphia, where he serves as municipal manager. The purpose of the study was to gain insightful answers to the specific problem of volunteer firefighters declining at a seemingly precipitous rate, especially in combination departments where paid and volunteer firefighters must work together to respond to emergencies in a timely manner. Using a flexible design multiple case study approach, the researcher studied two combination units located within the suburban collar counties of metropolitan Philadelphia. They were Upper Providence Township …

Exploring Rapport-Building In Coaching Relationships: Coach's Perspective, Tanya Devereaux Feb 2025

Exploring Rapport-Building In Coaching Relationships: Coach's Perspective, Tanya Devereaux

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation examines rapport-building strategies and challenges executive coaches face in their interactions with clients, with an emphasis on demographic influences. By employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the study captures the subjective experiences of 14 active executive business coaches. These coaches discussed techniques for rapport-building, such as pre-meeting engagement, setting expectations, and creating safe environments during initial sessions. The findings reveal that demographic factors—such as race, gender, and cultural background—impact the coach-coachee dynamic, often necessitating adaptive strategies to align with the unique needs of each client. The themes that emerged from the research aligned with existing literature, and professional experience …

China’S Readiness For Transitioning To A Low-Carbon Economy: Mitigant And Catalyst Factors For A Geopolitical Conflict, Yan Chen, Jiayi Lyu, Jaime Ortiz, Wenbin Song

International Business and Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications

The transition from a carbon-intensive economy to a carbon-neutral one has become a critical global objective to address climate change. This study examines the relationship between Low-Carbon Economic Development (LCED) and Geopolitical Risk (GPR) in China by focusing on the challenges and opportunities they present. We use a qualitative analysis to identify that rising GPR, exacerbated by market instability, resource allocation conflicts, and trade disputes, significantly hinders LCED progress. However, these geopolitical tensions also act as a catalyst for accelerating the development of renewable energy, reducing reliance on traditional energy sources, and fostering low-carbon technologies. Furthermore, LCED can ameliorate GPR …

The Ability Of Chatgpt To Aid In The Rapid Development Of Inoculation Message Treatments: A Case Study And Recommendations, Alicia Mason, Josh Compton, Griffin Cooper

Faculty Submissions

One of the most widely known types of AI technologies in recent years is ChatGPT. ChatGPT is a state-of-the-art language model that has revolutionized natural language processing by generating human-like text with context and coherence, enabling new possibilities for human-AI interaction (Brown et al., 2020). This case study reports on a 10-week conversational AI training initiative to assess whether ChatGPT4 can (a) identify the structural elements and features of conventional inoculation messages (i.e., forewarnings and preemptive refutations); (b) augment inoculation message design features (i.e., linguistic signatures, language, and length); (c) adapt messages for specific audiences (i.e., younger populations, experts); and …

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Post-surgical spinal infection occurs in up to 20 % of patients, despite aggressive peri-operative antibiotic treatments. To improve prophylaxis, we have designed and evaluated an ultrasound-activated prophylactic antibiotic release system to combat post-surgical bacterial survival. Polylactic acid (PLA) clips (1 cm3) were 3D-printed with an interior reservoir (0.8 cm3) for carrying drug payload, specifically vancomycin (VAN). Under IACUC approval, clips were surgically implanted into the spines of sheep (n = 9) and swine (n = 2) by removing the spinous process at several levels of the lumbar spine. In the sheep, clips were insonated and the …

Materiality In The Csr-Investor Reaction Relationship: A Replication And Extension Of Flammer (2013), Steven D. Kofford, Myles Melancon, Ben W. Lewis

Faculty Publications

We replicate and extend Flammer’s (2013) event study of investor reaction to environmental corporate social responsibility (CSR). Flammer found that investors reacted positively to eco-friendly events and negatively to eco-harmful events from 1980-2009 and that reaction to positive events decreased while reaction to negative events increased over time. We find similar results for Flamer’s original sample and an expanded sample including the same type of firms (U.S.-listed public firms) from 1980-2019. We then extend Flammer’s results by examining how materiality affects investor reaction over time. We find that investors only react to material events and that positive reaction to material …

Women’S Safety & Security: Utahns’ Awareness, Understanding, And Attitudes, Susan R. Madsen, Kolene Anderson

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

During the fall of 2023, Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) researchers conducted a statewide study to establish a baseline for public perceptions related to the awareness, understanding, and attitudes about challenges that Utah women and girls face. In early 2024, we published 20 short research summaries that shared the results of this comprehensive study. Then, in the fall of 2024, we administered the survey, with slight refinements, around the state of Utah. We now share the results of the 2024 data by releasing six white papers; this is the third in the series.

Overall, this comprehensive study was designed …

Chief Executive Officers, Accountability And Hidden Violations, Alan Saquella Feb 2025

Chief Executive Officers, Accountability And Hidden Violations, Alan Saquella

Publications

Corporate governance demands transparency, ethical leadership and accountability from Chief Executive Officers (CEOs). However, numerous cases suggest that CEOs often wield significant influence over what is reported to their boards of directors, particularly when it comes to internal misconduct, regulatory violations, and criminal activity. This lack of transparency raises serious concerns about ethical and legal obligations, as well as the effectiveness of board oversight.

Museum Funding As Critical Practice, Camille-Mary Sharp, Samantha Summers Feb 2025

Museum Funding As Critical Practice, Camille-Mary Sharp, Samantha Summers

Visual Arts Publications

While museums face an unprecedented amount of public backlash over their financial partnerships with donors and sponsors from harmful industries, the administrative practices of funding and fundraising remain understudied in museum scholarship. Responding to growing polarization between museums and stakeholder groups like artists, activists, and cultural workers, this article highlights findings from recent interviews with museum professionals about their funding-related practices to explore how professional perspectives can enrich current debates over ethical funding. Despite the structural difficulties posed by neoliberal museum models and government austerity, we argue that museum studies can work towards improving the field’s financial challenges by considering …

Ai Culture ‘Profiling’ And Anti-Money Laundering: Efficacy Vs Ethics, John W. Goodell, Cal B. Muckley, Parvati Neelakantan, Darragh Ryan

University Research

Using extensive transaction and money laundering detection data, at a globally important financial institution, we investigate the efficacy of including facets of national culture in formulating anti-money laundering predictions. For corporate and individual accounts, Hofstede individualism scores of the country in which a customer is resident, or from which a wire is sent/received, are of first-order importance in the detection of money laundering. When combined with account and transaction data; as well as even a proprietary institutional algorithm, individualism scores continue to determine the models’ predictive performances. The efficacy of cultural profiling in money laundering detection underscores the need for …

De-Dollarization And South Asia: Challenges And Opportunities For Nepal In A Multipolar Currency World, Keshav Bhattarai, Ambika P. Adhikari

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

The United States dollar’s dominance as the global reserve currency, established under the 1944 Bretton Woods system, persists despite the 1971 decoupling of the gold backing to the dollar. Its liquidity, stability, and full support by the US government confer a solid financial security and advantage to the currency, including a universal acceptance of the dollar and a relatively low borrowing cost. Because of these reasons, the US dollar has been able to dominate the global financial markets for the past eight decades. However, the rapidly emerging global political and economic power shifts are challenging the status of the US …

All The Lonely People: An Integrated Review And Research Agenda On Work And Loneliness, Julie M. Mccarthy, Berrin Erdogan, Talya Bauer, Selin Kudret, Emily Campion

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Decades of studies spanning multiple disciplines have provided insight into the critical role of loneliness in work contexts. In spite of this extensive research, a comprehensive review of loneliness and work remains absent. To address this gap, we conducted a multidisciplinary review of relevant theory and research and identified 213 articles reporting on 233 empirical studies from management, organizational psychology, sociology, medicine, and other domains to uncover why people feel lonely, how different features of work can contribute to feelings of loneliness, and the implications of employee loneliness for organizational settings. This enabled a critical examination of the distinct conceptualizations …
