This research examines the impact of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) on startup success, focusing on acquisition outcomes, IPO performance, and value creation versus capture. Grounded in digital platform theory, we explore how APIs help startups integrate into ecosystems, increasing scalability, visibility, and access to resources. Using Crunchbase data and visual analysis in RStudio, we compare API-enabled startups with others across performance metrics. Our findings show that startups with APIs raise more capital at IPO and employ more full-time staff, signaling greater investor confidence and organizational scale. This paper integrates research from cross-cultural management and entrepreneurship to examine the interactive effects of cultural intelligence (CQ) and individual entrepreneurial orientation (IEO) on performance during times of crisis such as the Covid-19 pandemic. We argue that the various dimensions of CQ will have differential effects on performance due to the unusual circumstance. The findings indicate that contrary to expectation, knowledge CQ has negative effect on performance. However, as predicted, skills CQ was found to have positive effect on performance while meta-cognition CQ has a significant negative effect on the same during crisis. Immigrants Reduce Unionization In The United States, Town Oh, Alex Nowrasteh

School of Business and Leadership Working Papers

Since the 1960s, U.S. union density has consistently dropped as the immigrant share of the population has risen. Using the Naylor and Cripps (1993) model of union formation, we argue that immigrants lower unionization by increasing diversity in the working population that, in turn, reduces solidarity and by having lower preferences for unionization. Empirically, we employ the skill-cell method devised by Borjas (2003) over the 1994-2020 period. Immigration can explain 30 percent of the decline in union density from 1994-2020.

This paper analyzes the CEO to minimum wage compensation ratio between 2010-2023 in the United States. By assessing reported compensation of 30 certain disciplined U.S. publicly traded companies in the 2023 Fortune 500 and with total compensation for CEOs disclosed through the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings (DEF 14A), a comparative ratio and significance study adjusted for inflation occurs. While average CEO compensation remained consistent in real value, the average CEO to minimum wage compensation ratio was above 1,000:1 for a majority of the companies and over 2,000:1 for a select few by 2023. Business managers employ various earnings management techniques (EMTs) to prevent debt covenant breaches. Understanding the underlying decision-making processes related to such techniques may help a manager choose the optimal approach to avoid a violation, but these cognitive processes remain poorly understood. The current functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study aims to explore the brain activation associated with assessment and decision-making to apply three commonly employed EMTs: accounting earnings management (AEM), classification shifting (CS), and total real earnings management (REM). This study examines the impact of Hofstede’s six cultural dimensions and institutional quality on financial development in the periods preceding and following the global financial crisis. The study analyzes data from 33 countries spanning 2001 to 2021 using a combination of OLS, two-stage GMM, and PVAR models and concludes that inflation and economic growth negatively, and exchange rate and institutional quality positively significantly enhance financial development. Countries characterized by low masculinity and uncertainty avoidance scores, alongside high individualism and indulgence scores, tend to exhibit greater financial development. This thesis examines how contemporary business culture contributes to unethical behavior within the financial industry, specifically focusing on the role of leadership style, codes of conduct, competitive pressures, and regulatory environments in shaping ethical decision-making. A survey was administered to 60 participants, with 32 complete responses retained for analysis. The responses were used to examine trends across demographics and asses the relationship between the identified factors and unethical behavior. Multiple regression analysis evaluated how leadership style, competition, regulation, and codes of conduct impact unethical behavior scores. The history of Utah women and finances shows how various policies, societal beliefs, and behaviors impact the financial standing of women in the state. Upon the arrival of pioneers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Salt Lake Valley in the 19th century, 41 women were allocated lots during the initial distribution of the land, including single, widowed, and “head of household” women whose husbands were away.¹ Interestingly, around the same time, the Oregon Donation Act of 1850 incentivized female migration to the West by allowing women land ownership rights. The World of Winter 2025 festival (WoW) is estimated to have generated or supported economic benefits for the city of Grand Rapids in the following ways:

• The total economic impact on the Grand Rapids area is estimated at $38 million in economic output, supporting 335 jobs.
• The total annual fiscal impact (tax revenue) of WoW is estimated at $311,000 for municipalities and $238,000 for Kent County.
• WoW attracted 2.3 million visitors, with 67% visiting from outside the local region.
• 44% of local visitors and 55% of all nonlocal visitors stated that WoW was their primary reason for visiting the area. …

This study aims to investigate the supply chain discussion during the COVID-19 pandemic using the supply chain tweets collected between March 2020 and May 2022 globally. The findings reveal an evolving sentiment trajectory: while the users’ sentiment remained neutral in 2020 and 2021, a negative sentiment surged starting in January 2022. Moreover, an emotion analysis indicates a mix of sadness and optimism among Twitter users, with anger gradually intensifying from June 2021 onward. Which Offer Should I Take? The Impact Of Various Recruiting Factors On Accounting Students' Internship Choice, Matthew Hart, Joleen Kremin

This study investigates factors in the recruiting process that influence accounting students’ choice of internship offers, especially when multiple internship offers are present. We surveyed 254 graduate students over several years after being recruited for busy season internships; 196 students received multiple offers and form our primary participant group. We find that students’ perceptions of seniors and staff personalities is the most influential factor during the recruiting process. Personality perceptions of other firm personnel, office visits, and internship location were also among the most influential factors in recruiting when students had to choose among multiple offers.
