A Hybrid Process-Mining Approach For Simulation Modeling, Waleed Abo-Hamad, Ahmed Ramy, Amr Arisha Jan 2017

A Hybrid Process-Mining Approach For Simulation Modeling, Waleed Abo-Hamad, Ahmed Ramy, Amr Arisha

Conference Papers

This paper presents a hybrid Modeling and Simulation framework to address business process challenges. The framework has integrated process mining techniques in the conceptual modeling phase to support developing simulation models that are unbiased and close reflection of reality in a timely manner. The hybrid approach overcomes the pitfalls of traditional conceptual modeling by using process mining techniques to discover valuable process knowledge from the analysis of event logs. The proposed hybrid framework has been applied to an Emergency Department (ED) in order to identify performance bottlenecks and explore improvement strategies in an attempt to meet national performance targets. A …

Connected Health: An Open Innovation Perspective., Anushree Priyadarshini, Maria Quinlan, Gerardine Doyle Jan 2017

Connected Health: An Open Innovation Perspective., Anushree Priyadarshini, Maria Quinlan, Gerardine Doyle

Articles

The concept of connected health has gained traction in recent years as a new technology enabled and networked model of health care delivery. It is often used as an umbrella term for eHealth, digital health, health informatics, telemedicine, mHealth and involves the establishment and management of a network of stakeholders with the aim of improving health care quality and out- comes. Yet a lack of open interactions and knowledge networks and the missing integration of the larger constituency of interdisciplinary experts are limiting the execution of the model and restricting its potential to devise services and interventions around patient’s needs …

How Can Higher Education Institutions (Heis) Support The Development Of Entrepreneurial Mindsets In Local Communities?, Emma O'Brien, Thomas M. Cooney Jan 2017

How Can Higher Education Institutions (Heis) Support The Development Of Entrepreneurial Mindsets In Local Communities?, Emma O'Brien, Thomas M. Cooney

Conference papers

Promoting an entrepreneurial culture through the development of entrepreneurial mindsets has become an important mission on the education and enterprise policy agenda of many governments and supranational organisations. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have responded to this call by developing entrepreneurship / enterprise education pedagogies that now place a greater focus on engendering entrepreneurial competencies within individuals rather than on the creation of new ventures. Such competences are relevant for all aspects of an individual’s life and may assist them in navigating the ever changing, chaotic, global world in which they live. However, some commentators have argued that this development is …

A Path Dependence Approach To Understanding Educational Policy Harmonisation: The Qualifications Framework In The European Higher Education Area, Sharon Feeney, John Hogan Jan 2017

A Path Dependence Approach To Understanding Educational Policy Harmonisation: The Qualifications Framework In The European Higher Education Area, Sharon Feeney, John Hogan

Articles

This paper examines the development of a system of easily readable and comparable qualifications within a single Qualifications Framework in the European Higher Education Area (QF-EHEA) as part of the Bologna process. Employing a path dependence approach, combined with new understandings of critical junctures and incremental policy change, as our conceptual lens, we find that multiple self-reinforcing events between the 1998 Sorbonne Declaration and the 2005 Bergen Communiqué, in the form of Declarations and Communiqués, guided implementation of the Bologna policy process, along with elements of incremental layering. We also see evidence that policy formation and implementation are self-reinforcing in …

Health Care For All In Ireland? The Consequences Of Politics For Health Policy, Vivienne Byers Jan 2017

Health Care For All In Ireland? The Consequences Of Politics For Health Policy, Vivienne Byers

Articles

The Irish health-care system is a complicated mix of public and private providers, with inequitable and unclear routes for health-service users to access and navigate the system. In 2011, the Irish Government committed to significant health reform to develop a universal single-tier health system. In line with other European nations this was to be underpinned by the principle of social solidarity, with equitable access based on need rather than ability to pay. The road to this reform and its recent collapse highlights the practical implications of political and policy choices in health care, and has implications for financing and delivery, …

Examining The Role Of Store Design On Consumers’ Cross-Sectional Perceptions Of Retail Brand Loyalty, John Murray Dr., Jonathan Elms, Christoph Teller Jan 2017

Examining The Role Of Store Design On Consumers’ Cross-Sectional Perceptions Of Retail Brand Loyalty, John Murray Dr., Jonathan Elms, Christoph Teller

Articles

This paper compares new and established store design prototypes of the same retailer to examine the role of consumers’ cross-sectional perceptions of retail brand loyalty. In-store surveys were administered to capture consumers’ store-level perceptions towards a new store prototype and an older established prototype of the same fast fashion retailer. The data was subjected to multi-group analyzes with structural equations modeling. The findings suggest that store novelty and complexity promote both store design pleasure and retail brand loyalty outcomes. The different store designs do not, however, account for differences in brand loyalty perceptions at the overall retailer level when multi-group …

Internal Brand Identification As Metamorphic Glue In The Internal Branding Process Within A Retailer Network, Edmund O'Callaghan, John Murray Jan 2017

Internal Brand Identification As Metamorphic Glue In The Internal Branding Process Within A Retailer Network, Edmund O'Callaghan, John Murray

Articles

The growth of collaborative independent retail networks (CIRN’s) has been a significant response by independents to the growing power of retailer multiples. These networks vary in nature and structure, but share a common objective of improved competitiveness through more effective buying, pooled marketing and/or national brand recognition. At a minimum, these networks have enabled independent retailers to achieve a relative degree of competitive parity with multiples, through participation in strategic brand building. Consequently, there is a need for a greater understanding of key issues relating to building independent store brands through collaborative networks. This research aims to better understand the …

How To Use Analogies For Creative Business Modelling, Ryan Rumble, Niall Minto Jan 2017

How To Use Analogies For Creative Business Modelling, Ryan Rumble, Niall Minto

Articles

Purpose

This paper aims to present a method for interpreting and reinterpreting business models as analogies to support the creation of new business model ideas.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use the literature on cognitive frames and attention to demonstrate the often-overlooked potential of analogies. From this, the authors derive practical recommendations for the use of analogies in creative business model design.

Findings

Managers can design creative business models by seeking multiple interpretations of the way other businesses create and capture value.

Originality/value

Business model frameworks are commonplace, but there is little discussion on how to use them effectively. Furthermore, while analogies …

Tensions In Aspirational Csr Communication—A Longitudinal Investigation Of Csr Reporting, Lisa Koep Jan 2017

Tensions In Aspirational Csr Communication—A Longitudinal Investigation Of Csr Reporting, Lisa Koep

Conference papers

A recent emergence of academic discourse within organisation and management scholarship is encouraging organisations to embrace the performative power of aspirational talk within corporate social responsibility (CSR) communication. However, there has been no empirical study to date to investigate the appropriateness of such encouragement. This paper analyses CSR reporting and underlying sensemaking processes to trace how far this academic departure from the dominant discourse of verification and standardisation is reflected and accepted within this practice. The process-focused, longitudinal study is based on a discursive analysis of Nestlé CSR reports, revealing the struggles between forward and backward facing statements, and tracing …

Paul Williams is moving his restaurant, Canteen, around the corner from its original home on Mallow Street, in Limerick city. Many of us will miss the little shoebox space in which Mr Williams first weaved his magic, for the disconnect between the fantastic food, served in a box on a plastic tray, and the bedsit-land chic of the wee room, was one of the most fun experiences in Irish food. Some 25 years ago, long before Temple Bar was a glint in any property developer’s eye, Carol Walsh signed herself a lease in a tall, narrow building on a cobbled street just off the River Liffey, surrounded by artists' studios, record stores and comic shops. She kitted out the first floor with walls of mirrors and opened a dance and aerobics studio. Downstairs, she opened a vegetarian café called The Cellary. Later, in Dublin's clubbing heyday, Carol ran several underground clubnights in this ever-adaptable space. While her neighbouring building was being transformed into what is now Temple Bar Gallery, Carol …

Chapter One Set Lunch Menu 2017, Chapter One

Menus of the 21st Century

Successful restaurants are as much a result of time, place and product as anything else. In many ways we had a lot stacked against us – we’re located in a basement, deep in the Northside of the city. But we had plenty in our favour too. We’ve worked hard to make our basement feel anything but that. By using Irish and international craftspeople we’ve transformed part of what was the former home of George Jameson, the whiskey maker, into a uniquely Irish dining space.

The Irish home has always been a place of conviviality, from the most humble cup of …
