Can Government Inaction Result In Rising Gift Tax Revenue?, Hugh H. Lambert

James Alm noted in 1988 that tax uncertainty is particularly problematic for taxpayers, and he identified two risk areas that can cause changes in taxpayer behavior: variations to the tax base (tax base risk) and modifications to the tax rates (tax rate risk).1 This report studies how estate and gift tax laws passed with sunset provisions created taxpayer uncertainty in 2010 and 2012, and how that uncertainty led to increased gifting activity by wealthy taxpayers, which in turn increased the amount of gift tax revenue collected by the federal government in 2011 and 2013. This exercise allows students to apply core family business concepts to a real-world business context. In this exercise, students interview a family business owner and present their findings both as a written summary and oral presentation. This exercise is appropriate for undergraduate, graduate, and executive students taking a family business course, or a course with a unit on family business, online or in-person. Students complete this exercise individually as an end of term project; however, the exercise can be assigned as a group project.

Many NSRA members are finding increasing challenges to recruiting and retaining employees as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic-fueled “Great Resignation”, a phrase used to describe the extraordinary number of employees quitting jobs during this time. A new Pew Research Center survey finds that low pay, a lack of opportunities for advancement and feeling disrespected at work are the top reasons why Americans quit their jobs in 2021. The survey also finds that those who quit and are now employed elsewhere say their current job has better pay, more opportunities for advancement and more work-life balance and flexibility.

This paper presents the results of an exploratory study of why and how professional football teams in the National Football League (NFL) use cheerleaders, the vast majority of whom are women. From archival press reports, media guides, and team website content, we examine why some teams choose not to use cheerleaders; and among the majority of teams that do use cheerleaders, the purposes for which they employ them. The Psychology Of Covid-19 Economic Impact Payment Use, Sarah D. Asebedo, Taufiq Hasan Quadria, Blake T. Gray, Yi Lui

This study investigates how American adults’ personality and financial self-efficacy (FSE) beliefs contributed to how they used their COVID-19 CARES Act Economic Impact Payment (EIP) for spending needs, spending wants, and financial transactions (save, invest, debt repayment). The results from a sample of 1172 Amazon MTurk users collected in July 2020 suggest that both personality traits and FSE beliefs were associated with EIP use. Specifically, this study finds that FSE and conscientiousness emerged as the most robust predictors of EIP use across all categories of financial behavior with a greater allocation of EIP funds to saving and less to spending …

Adam Farber, owner of Mark Adrian Shoes in Gloucester, Massachusetts, has one of the shortest family business succession stories in the industry based on planning – not an emergency. His family has five generations of experience in the shoemaking and shoe retailing industry dating back to the late 1800s, although not all generations owned the same business. Lookism, or ranking an individual based on attractiveness, is a prevalent employment prejudice. Research has shown that looks influence salaries, career growth and even hiring (Warhurst, van den Broek, Hall, & Nickson, 2009). Because it is difficult to prove, there is no legislation that specifically addresses lookism. The current economy gives employers a vast selection of job applicants and candidates for open positions and “beauty premiums” (individuals considered above average with pretty faces) may have a better chance at being hired. Family businesses account for over 50% of U.S. GDP, and 35% of Fortune 500 companies are controlled by families. This research was practical and important because of it suggested possible motive for schools that want to increase revenue or win percentage.
