Taxisim: A Multiagent Simulation Platform For Evaluating Taxi Fleet Operations, Shih-Fen Cheng, Thi Duong Nguyen Aug 2011

Taxisim: A Multiagent Simulation Platform For Evaluating Taxi Fleet Operations, Shih-Fen Cheng, Thi Duong Nguyen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Taxi service is an important mode of public transportation in most metropolitan areas since it provides door-to-door convenience in the public domain. Unfortunately, despite all the convenience taxis bring, taxi fleets are also extremely inefficient to the point that over 50% of its operation time could be spent in idling state. Improving taxi fleet operation is an extremely challenging problem, not just because of its scale, but also due to fact that taxi drivers are self-interested agents that cannot be controlled centrally. To facilitate the study of such complex and decentralized system, we propose to construct a multiagent simulation platform …

Access To Cpd Opportunities And Resources To Assist Professional Accountants To Meet Their Commitment To Life Long Learning: Evidence From The Asia Pacific Region, Themin Suwardy, P De Lange, Beverley Jackling

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This project sought to investigate the accounting practitioners’ perceptions on the effectiveness of the delivery of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in the Asia Pacific Region 1. The study aims to inform the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and its associated member bodies of the most appropriate range of delivery methods that enhance the quality of learning outcomes from participation in mandatory CPD. The Asia Pacific region was selected as it is experiencing rapid economic expansion and a growing demand for professional accounting services together with an expectation that those working in the financial services industry keep abreast of change and …

Effects Of National Culture On Earnings Quality Of Banks, Chee Yeow Lim, Kanagaretnam Kiridaran, Gerald J. Lobo Aug 2011

Effects Of National Culture On Earnings Quality Of Banks, Chee Yeow Lim, Kanagaretnam Kiridaran, Gerald J. Lobo

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We examine the relation between four dimensions of national culture and earnings quality of banks using a sample of banks from 39 countries. Our main analysis, which focuses on the pre-financial crisis period 1993–2006, indicates that banks in high individualism, high masculinity, and low uncertainty avoidance societies manage earnings to just-meet-or-beat the prior year's earnings. In tests of income smoothing through loan loss provisions, we find that banks in high individualism, high power distance, and low uncertainty avoidance societies report smoother earnings. Our exploratory analysis of the effects of national culture on accounting outcomes during the financial crisis period 2007–2008 …

Optimal Investment Under Operational Flexibility, Risk Aversion, And Uncertainty, Michail Chronopoulos, Bert De Reyck, Afzal Siddiqui Aug 2011

Optimal Investment Under Operational Flexibility, Risk Aversion, And Uncertainty, Michail Chronopoulos, Bert De Reyck, Afzal Siddiqui

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Traditional real options analysis addresses the problem of investment under uncertainty assuming a risk-neutral decision maker and complete markets. In reality, however, decision makers are often risk averse and markets are incomplete. We confirm that risk aversion lowers the probability of investment and demonstrate how this effect can be mitigated by incorporating operational flexibility in the form of embedded suspension and resumption options. Although such options facilitate investment, we find that the likelihood of investing is still lower compared to the risk-neutral case. Risk aversion also increases the likelihood that the project will be abandoned, although this effect is less …

Maritime Trade Evolutions And Port City Developments In Asia, X. J. Yang, Joyce M. W. Low, Loon Ching Tang Aug 2011

Maritime Trade Evolutions And Port City Developments In Asia, X. J. Yang, Joyce M. W. Low, Loon Ching Tang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Historically, almost all goods transported worldwide have been carried by sea with the current estimate stands at approximately 90 percent by volume and 70 percent by worth. Maritime industry is an important economic sector as it has a direct impact on the prosperity of a region and/or city. This chapter presents a review on maritime trade evolution in Asia from the thirteenth centuries to the post-World War II, followed by an examination on the contemporary development of some major Asia ports. From the extant port literature, a list of factors affecting port competition and development is identified and reviewed. The …

Financial Capital And Startup Survival, Jeongsik Lee, Wei Zhang Aug 2011

Financial Capital And Startup Survival, Jeongsik Lee, Wei Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Are entrepreneurs liquidity-constrained? We attempt to answer this question by investigating the impact of financial capital on startup survival. The analysis of about 5,000 startups from the Kauffman Firm Survey data shows that, controlling for human capital, having some type of financial capital increases survival chances, supporting the existence of liquidity constraints. Interestingly, however, the effects are not uniform across types of capital: securing loans is associated with higher survival likelihood but receiving equity investments shortens startup longevity. Accounting for the endogeneity in financing using the Inverse Probability Treatment Weighted (IPTW) estimation reveals that the negative effect of equity capital …

Acquisitions Driven By Stock Overvaluation: Are They Good Deals?, Fangjian Fu, Leming Lin, Micah Officer Aug 2011

Acquisitions Driven By Stock Overvaluation: Are They Good Deals?, Fangjian Fu, Leming Lin, Micah Officer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Overvaluation may motivate a firm to use its stock to acquire a target whose stock is not as overpriced (Shleifer and Vishny (2003)). Though hypothetically desirable, these acquisitions in practice create little, if any, value for acquirer shareholders. Two factors often impede value creation: payment of a large premium to the target and lack of economic synergies in the acquisition. We find that overvaluationdriven stock acquirers suffer worse operating performance and lower long-run stock returns than control firms that are in the same industry, similarly overvalued at the same time, have similar size and Tobin’s q, but have not pursued …

Integrating Distributed Work: Task Design, Communication And Tacit Coordination Mechanisms, Kannan Srikanth, Phanish Puranam Aug 2011

Integrating Distributed Work: Task Design, Communication And Tacit Coordination Mechanisms, Kannan Srikanth, Phanish Puranam

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We investigate coordination strategies in the remote delivery of business services (i.e. Business Process Offshoring). We analyze 126 surveys of offshored processes to understand both the sources of difficulty in the remote delivery of services as well as how organizations overcome these difficulties. We find that interdependence between offshored and onshore processes can lower offshore process performance. Investment in coordination mechanisms such as modularity, ongoing communication and generating common ground across locations ameliorate the performance impact of interdependence. In particular, we are able to show that building common ground - knowledge that is shared and known to be shared - …

Communicating Crisis: How Culture Influences Image Repair In Western And Asian Governments, Yvonne Siew‐Yoong Low, Jeni Varughese, Augustine Pang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to seek to understand the differences in image repair strategies adopted by two governments that operate in the Western and Asian societies when faced with similar crises. Design/methodology/approach: Textual analyses are presented of communication of Hurricane Katrina and Typhoon Morakot by the Taiwanese and US governments, respectively. Findings: Faced with similar accusations of slow response, the Asian culture, represented by the Taiwanese Government, used predominantly mortification and corrective action strategies. The Western culture, represented by the US Government, used predominantly bolstering and defeasibility and a mixed bag of other strategies such as shifting …

The Transformation Of China’S Agriculture System And Its Impact On Southeast Asia, Phoebe Mingxuan Luo, John A. Donaldson, Qian Forrest Zhang Aug 2011

The Transformation Of China’S Agriculture System And Its Impact On Southeast Asia, Phoebe Mingxuan Luo, John A. Donaldson, Qian Forrest Zhang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The increased role for agribusiness and larger scale production in China’s agricultural system is limited by China’s severe lack of arable land. The Household Responsibility System provides farmers a measure of power, hampering agribusiness from acquiring land needed for expansion. Some Chinese companies have sought cheaper and often more accessible land in nearby regions, including Southeast Asia. While such investments have the potential to deliver benefits, including increased productivity, structural constraints such as weak land ownership and environmental laws, highly unequal distribution of land and underdevelopment of peasant organizations prevent many poorer farmers from benefiting from these investments.

Better Than Bread And Butter: Singapore’S General Election 2011, Knowledge@Smu Jul 2011

Better Than Bread And Butter: Singapore’S General Election 2011, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

This year's parliamentary election offers plenty of fodder for academics and political analysts. After all, it saw the highest number of contested seats, the awakening of an oft-assumed apathetic electorate, unprecedented opposition gains, and consequently, the incumbent's worst showing – all of which may be discussed freely on non-regulated social media and networks. For those who enjoy a more traditional form of browsing, the recently published Voting in Change offers up a collection of colourful essays from political commentators such as SMU's Bridget Welsh and Eugene Tan.

Robert Swan, who has walked to both Poles, has expanded his life-long passion for exploration into the championing of environmental issues affecting the Antarctic region. Speaking at the inaugural Vitol Industry Speaker Series organised by the International Trading Institute @SMU, Swan shares stories of his faraway travels, as well as lessons on leadership and teamwork that, he believes, applies on both hazardous treks and life-threatening boardrooms.

Customers today look not only at the product, but also at value - not just economic value, but also, the social, environmental and ethical merits behind every purchase. For companies, particularly small to medium sized enterprises, simply hawking products will not cut it anymore, says marketing expert Gaurav Bhalla. Speaking at a Singapore Management University graduation ceremony, Bhalla shares his thoughts on the role of 'marketing' in attracting and retaining today's sophisticated consumers.

The Risk Exposures Of Asia-Focused Hedge Funds, Melvyn Teo Jul 2011

The Risk Exposures Of Asia-Focused Hedge Funds, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre

How have Asia-focused hedge funds adjusted their risk exposures in response to the recent financial crisis? By evaluating fund performance relative to an augmented Fung and Hsieh (2004) model, we find that Asia-focused hedge funds have broadly trimmed risk exposures post-crisis. They have reduced their exposure to small stocks relative to large stocks, scaled back their loadings on high yield corporate bonds relative to low yield U.S. sovereign debt, and pared their allocation to the Japanese equity markets. At the same time, however, they are now more exposed to Asian equity markets.

Singapore’S Brand “Keloid”: Going Beyond Canes And Chewing Gums, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

With a tip of the hat to names like Michael Fay, Oliver Fricker and Wrigley's, Singapore’s international brand image, as viewed through Western lenses, may be that of a harsh nanny state. But of course, recent megaprojects and events are starting to change perceptions. Yet, even with new coats of polish on an enhanced cosmopolitan brand, blemishes from the past remain – scars that are better left unpicked, says author Koh Buck Song at a Singapore Management University talk.

Conflict Of Interest Reforms And Analysts’ Research Biases, Hai Lu, Hai Lu, Yuyan Guan Jul 2011

Conflict Of Interest Reforms And Analysts’ Research Biases, Hai Lu, Hai Lu, Yuyan Guan

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This study examines the consequences of the series of reforms targeting investment-banking-related conflicts of interest. We compare and contrast optimism biases in analysts’ stock recommendations and earnings forecasts across different types of analyst firms in the post-reform period 2004–2007 versus the pre-reform period 1998–2001. We document a significant reduction in the relative optimism of sanctioned investment bank analysts’ stock recommendations, but not their earnings forecasts. Moreover, we find little change in the profitability of their stock recommendations, but detect a drop in the accuracy of earnings forecasts made by investment bank analysts. In sum, the reforms achieve the objective of …

Unregulated Stock Markets In Second Life, Robert Bloomfield, Young Jun Cho

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

SLCapex is a stock exchange owned and operated by “residents” of the online virtual world Second Life. Despite its almost complete lack of regulation and legal protections against fraud or insider trading, issuers were able to raise approximately US$145,000 from investors, which grew to US$900,000 in market value before plummeting, resulting in overall investor returns of −71%. Investors in large issuances lost more than investors in small issuances, and small investors experienced more severe losses relative to large investors when more money was at stake, indicating that the market did a poor job of protecting investors from issuers and of …
