Bond Rating Agencies And Stock Analysts: Who Knows What When?, Louis H. Ederington, Jeremy C. Goh Dec 1998

Bond Rating Agencies And Stock Analysts: Who Knows What When?, Louis H. Ederington, Jeremy C. Goh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Both bond ratings agencies and stock analysts evaluate publicly traded companies and communicate their opinions to investors. Comparing the timelines of each, it is found that Granger causality flows both ways. While most bond downgrades are preceded by declines in actual and forecasting earnings, both actual earnings and forecasts of future earnings tend to fall following downgrades. Although part of this post-downgrade forecast revision can be attributed to negative news regarding actual earnings, most appears to be reaction to the downgrade itself. Little change is found in actual earnings following upgrades. Analysts, however, tend to increase their forecasts of future …

Local Search Methods For The Discrete Time/Resource Trade-Off Problem In Project Networks, Bert De Reyck, Erik Demeulemeester, Willy Herroelen Dec 1998

Local Search Methods For The Discrete Time/Resource Trade-Off Problem In Project Networks, Bert De Reyck, Erik Demeulemeester, Willy Herroelen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this paper we consider the discrete time/resource trade-off problem in project networks. Given a project network consisting of nodes (activities) and arcs (technological precedence relations), in which the duration of the activities is a discrete, nonincreasing function of the amount of a single renewable resource committed to it, the discrete time/resource trade-off problem minimizes the project makespan subject to precedence constraints and a single renewable resource constraint. For each activity, a work content is specified such that all execution modes (duration/resource requirement pairs) for performing the activity are allowed as long as the product of the duration and the …

A Branch-And-Bound Procedure For The Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem With Generalized Precedence Relations, Bert De Reyck, Willy Herroelen Nov 1998

A Branch-And-Bound Procedure For The Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem With Generalized Precedence Relations, Bert De Reyck, Willy Herroelen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We present an optimal solution procedure for the resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) with generalized precedence relations (RCPSP-GPR) with the objective of minimizing the project makespan. The RCPSPGPR extends the RCPSP to arbitrary minimal and maximal time lags between the starting and completion times of activities. The proposed procedure is suited for solving a general class of project scheduling problems and allows for arbitrary precedence constraints, activity ready times and deadlines, multiple renewable resource constraints with time-varying resource requirements and availabilities, several types of permissible and mandatory activity overlaps and multiple projects. It can be extended to other regular and …

Dynamics Of Dry Friction: A Numerical Investigation, Yun Fong Lim, Kan Chen Nov 1998

Dynamics Of Dry Friction: A Numerical Investigation, Yun Fong Lim, Kan Chen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We perform extended numerical simulation of the dynamics of dry friction, based on a model derived from the phenomenological description proposed by Baumberger et al. [Nature (London) 367, 544 (1994)] and Heslot et al. [Phys. Rev. E 49, 4973 (1994)]. Under a quasistationary approximation, the model is related to the Dieterich-Ruina aging (or slowness) law, which was introduced by Dieterich [Pure Appl. Geophys. 116, 790 (1978); J. Geophys. Res. 84, 2161 (1979); in Mechanical Behavior of Crustal Rocks, edited by N. L. Carter et al., Geophysics Monograph No. 24 (AGU, Washington, DC, 1981), p. 103] and Ruina [J. Geophys. Res. …

Managing New Product Definition In Highly Dynamic Environments, Shantanu Bhattacharya, Viswanathan Krishnan, Vijay Mahajan Nov 1998

Managing New Product Definition In Highly Dynamic Environments, Shantanu Bhattacharya, Viswanathan Krishnan, Vijay Mahajan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In highly dynamic environments, characterized by changing customer preferences and uncertainty about competitive products, managing the development of a new product is a complex managerial task. The traditional practice, recommended in the literature, of reaching a sharp definition early in the new product development (NPD) process may not be optimal, desirable or even feasible in such dynamic situations. Under high uncertainty, forcing early finalization of specifications may result in a firm getting locked into an incorrect definition. Based on our study of NPD in the high technology industry, we present a model of an approach called real-time definition, in which …

Owing to rapid internationalization of business activity, human resource development (HRD) has become increasingly important in recent years. This is especially true when domestic human resource management takes on international dimensions as it deals more with multicultural workforce. International HRD, much of it embodied in cross-cultural training, has been proposed by many scholars as a means of facilitating more effective interaction among managers, employees and customers from different national-cultural backgrounds. Despite the need for cross-cultural skills and the shortage of managers who possess these skills, most human resource decision-makers do nothing in terms of cross-cultural training for their employees. Studies …

Market Orientation And Organizational Performance: Is Innovation A Missing Link?, Jin K. Han, Namwoon Kim, Rajendra K. Srivastava

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In recent years, a market-oriented corporate culture increasingly has been considered a key element of superior corporate performance. Although organizational innovativeness is believed to be a potential mediator of this market orientation - corporate performance relationship, much of the evidence to date remains anecdotal or speculative. In this context, a systematic framework is presented to test the postulated market orientation-innovation-performance chain. To this end, the direct causality assumption of market orientation on organizational performance is examined with Narver and Slater's (1990) market orientation framework. Moreover, a componentwise approach is taken, and an examination is conducted of how the 3 core …

Undergraduates Arguing A Case, Susheela A. Varghese, Sunita A. Abraham

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This essay describes an instructional study in which students were trained in two key aspects of argumentation, namely, the structural and interpersonal components. The structural aspects were taught and measured in terms of Toulmin's (1958) framework of argument analysis (i.e., the quality of claims, grounds and warrants used). The interpersonal aspects in turn were measured in terms of the creation of a clear persona, audience adaptiveness (the appropriate use of rational and emotional appeals), and stance towards the unique discourse of argumentation. Students performed a pre-instruction writing task, underwent eight weeks of explicit instruction in argumentation, then performed the task …

Searching For Periods Of Volatility: A Study Of The Behavior Of Volatility In Thai Stocks, Theodore Bos, David K. Ding, Thomas A. Fetherston Aug 1998

Searching For Periods Of Volatility: A Study Of The Behavior Of Volatility In Thai Stocks, Theodore Bos, David K. Ding, Thomas A. Fetherston

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper improves the precision of the useful new procedure of Inclán and Tiao (1994) that estimates variance shift points in a time series. It accomplishes this by incorporating the evidence of Bos and Fetherston (1992) that the linear Brown, Durbin, and Evans (Brown et al., 1975) critical CUSUM of squares boundaries [used by Inclán and Tiao] produce an understatement of instability at the data end points. This is solved by Tanizaki (1995) which, like Bos and Fetherston (1992) and Bos and Fetherston (1995), uses the fact that the CUSUM of squares statistic follows a beta distribution. This study uses …

Factors Which Improve The Construct Validity Of Assessment Centers: A Review, Filip Lievens Jul 1998

Factors Which Improve The Construct Validity Of Assessment Centers: A Review, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article reviews 21 studies which manipulated specific variables to determine their impact on the construct validity of assessment centers. This review shows that the studies regarding the impact of different observation, evaluation, and integration procedures yielded mixed results. Conversely, dimension factors (number, conceptual distinctiveness, and transparency), assessor factors (type of assessor and type of assessor training), and exercise factors (exercise form and use of role-players) were found to moderate construct validity. On the basis of the review, practical recommendations are derived to maximize the probability that practitioners design and administer an assessment center with construct validity. Finally, new perspectives …

New Computational Results On The Discrete Time/Cost Trade-Off Problem In Project Networks, Erik Demeulemeester, Bert De Reyck, Bram Foubert, Willy Herroelen Jul 1998

New Computational Results On The Discrete Time/Cost Trade-Off Problem In Project Networks, Erik Demeulemeester, Bert De Reyck, Bram Foubert, Willy Herroelen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We describe a new exact procedure for the discrete time/cost trade-off problem in deterministic activity-on-the-arc networks of the CPM type, where the duration of each activity is a discrete, nonincreasing function of the amount of a single resource (money) committed to it. The objective is to construct the complete and efficient time/cost profile over the set of feasible project durations. The procedure uses a horizon-varying approach based on the iterative optimal solution of the problem of minimising the sum of the resource use over all activities subject to the activity precedence constraints and a project deadline. This optimal solution is …

Generalizations About Trust In Marketing Channel Relationships Using Meta-Analysis, Inge Geyskens, Jan-Benedict E. M. Steenkamp, Nirmalya Kumar Jul 1998

Generalizations About Trust In Marketing Channel Relationships Using Meta-Analysis, Inge Geyskens, Jan-Benedict E. M. Steenkamp, Nirmalya Kumar

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This meta-analysis examines the role of trust in marketing channels. First, the analysis of painwise relationships involving trust indicates that trust, on average, exhibits a robust and strong relationship with other channel relationship constructs under a wide range of different conditions. Next, we explored systematic patterns of variation in the correlations. The results demonstrate that the use of experiments, samples drawn from multiple industries, and US data tend to produce larger effects than the use of field studies, samples drawn from a single industry, and European data respectively do. Various other methodological characteristics of studies did not have significant effects. …

Manufacturing Operations In Europe: Where Do We Go Next?, Arnoud De Meyer Jun 1998

Manufacturing Operations In Europe: Where Do We Go Next?, Arnoud De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Extrapolating from the results of a 10-year INSEAD Survey, the author offers some views on the future for manufacturing in Europe. The model on which the Survey was based indicates that competitive priorities and action plans in manufacturing changed over the 10-year period. Taking lessons from these, the author makes some 'informed guesses' on the future implications for European manufacturers in the form of seven normative features: innovation in the value package; close integration between manufacturing and service; the importance of internationalism; flexible project-based organisation; more integrated management of the value added chain; successful transformation of operational programmes into strategic …

Interdependence, Punitive Capability, And The Reciprocation Of Punitive Actions In Channel Relationships, Nirmalya Kumar, Lisa K. Scheer, Jan-Benedict E. M. Steenkamp May 1998

Interdependence, Punitive Capability, And The Reciprocation Of Punitive Actions In Channel Relationships, Nirmalya Kumar, Lisa K. Scheer, Jan-Benedict E. M. Steenkamp

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Using data from automobile dealers in the Netherlands, the authors find that dealers' punitive actions toward their key suppliers are affected by their perceptions of their own and their supplier's interdependence and punitive capabilities, as well as by the supplier's punitive actions. Punitive actions are affected by interdependence, but a more complete picture is achieved by also examining punitive capability. The authors test hypotheses based on bilateral deterrence, conflict spiral, and relative power theories, but none of these comprehensively explains the effects of both total power and power asymmetry. Dealer punitive actions are inhibited as total interdependence increases, but are …

Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling: A Survey Of Recent Developments, Willy Herroelen, Bert De Reyck, Erik Demeulemeester Apr 1998

Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling: A Survey Of Recent Developments, Willy Herroelen, Bert De Reyck, Erik Demeulemeester

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We review recent advances in dealing with the resource-constrained project scheduling problem using an efficient depth-first branch-and-bound procedure, elaborating on the branching scheme, bounding calculations and dominance rules, and discuss the potential of using truncated branch-and-bound. We derive conclusions from the research on optimal solution procedures for the basic problem and subsequently illustrate extensions to a rich and realistic variety of related problems involving activity preemption, the use of ready times and deadlines, variable resource requirements and availabilities, generalized precedence relations, time/cost, time/resource and resource/resource trade-offs and non-regular objective functions.

Telling Tales: Management Gurus' Narratives And The Construction Of Managerial Identity, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Graeme Salaman Mar 1998

Telling Tales: Management Gurus' Narratives And The Construction Of Managerial Identity, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Graeme Salaman

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper examines the reasons for the apparently powerful impact of management gurus' ideas (i.e. guru theory) on senior managers. An examination of the limited literature on management gurus and other related literatures suggests three explanations for the appeal of guru theory for senior managers. The first set of explanations relates to various features of management work which may heighten managers' receptivity to guru ideas. The second set focuses on the gurus themselves and emphasizes the form in which they are presented (i.e. public performances). The final set of explanations highlights the importance of the socioeconomic and cultural context within …

Managing Creativity In Organizations: A Total System Approach, Gilbert Tan Mar 1998

Managing Creativity In Organizations: A Total System Approach, Gilbert Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Organizations need creativity to adapt to the fast-changing environment and revitalize itself. In response to this need, managers have invested in various single approaches, such as, creativity training programmes, team-building, and leadership development to improve creativity. This paper argues that managing creativity in organization is a complex problem and thus requires a more integrated approach. In this paper, I have provided a theoretical framework to explain how managers can foster and sustain creativity in their organizations using a total systems approach. In the framework, I depict the organization as having four subsystems, namely, culture, techno-structural subsystems, management and people. Each …

Market-Based Assets And Shareholder Value: A Framework For Analysis, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava, Tasadduq A. Shervani, Liam Fahey Jan 1998

Market-Based Assets And Shareholder Value: A Framework For Analysis, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava, Tasadduq A. Shervani, Liam Fahey

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The authors develop a conceptual framework of the marketing-finance interface and discuss its implications for the theory and practice of marketing. The framework proposes that marketing is concerned with the task of developing and managing market-based assets, or assets that arise from the commingling of the firm with entities in its external environment. Examples of market-based assets include customer relationships, channel relationships, and partner relationships. Market-based assets, in turn, increase shareholder value by accelerating and enhancing cash flows, lowering the volatility and vulnerability of cash flows, and increasing the residual value of cash flows. A New Look At Within-Source Interrater Reliability Of 360-Degree Feedback Ratings, Gary J. Greguras, Chet Robie Jan 1998

A New Look At Within-Source Interrater Reliability Of 360-Degree Feedback Ratings, Gary J. Greguras, Chet Robie

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study investigated within-source interrater reliability of supervisor, peer, and subordinate feedback ratings made for managerial development. Raters provided 360-degree feedback ratings on a sample of 153 managers. Using generalizability theory, results indicated that little within-source agreement exists; a large portion of the error variance is attributable to the combined rater main effect and Rater X Ratee effect; more raters are needed than currently used to reach acceptable levels of reliability; supervisors are the most reliable with trivial differences between peers and subordinates when the numbers of raters and items are held constant; and peers are the most reliable, followed …

Predictors Of Coping Behavior After A Layoff, Carrie R. Leana, Daniel C. Feldman, Gilbert Tan Jan 1998

Predictors Of Coping Behavior After A Layoff, Carrie R. Leana, Daniel C. Feldman, Gilbert Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

A study examined the effects of individual differences and situational characteristics on individuals' use of 6 job loss coping strategies among laid-off industrial workers. In each case the predictors explained a significant portion of the variance (30%-47%) although different predictors were significantly associated with each of the 6 coping strategies. The results also suggest that the use of problem-focused and symptom-focused coping strategies are complementary rather than mutually exclusive.

Creating The 'Right' Impression: Towards A Dramaturgy Of Management Consultancy, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Graeme Salaman Jan 1998

Creating The 'Right' Impression: Towards A Dramaturgy Of Management Consultancy, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Graeme Salaman

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article adopts a novel approach by examining the activities of management consultants in terms of the dramaturgical metaphor. This is a useful framework within which to illuminate their activities since a number of service characteristics combine to create a context within which the key task of management consultants is to convince clients of their quality and value. Impression management is therefore a core feature of consultancy work. In this sense management consultants are viewed as systems of persuasion creating compelling images which persuade clients of their quality and worth. This argument is illustrated with reference to the activities of …

An Optimal Procedure For The Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem With Discounted Cash Flows And Generalized Precedence Relations, Bert De Reyck, Willy Herroelen Jan 1998

An Optimal Procedure For The Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem With Discounted Cash Flows And Generalized Precedence Relations, Bert De Reyck, Willy Herroelen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this paper, we consider the resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) with discounted cash flows and generalized precedence relations (RCPSPDC-GPR). The RCPSPDC-GPR extends the RCPSP to (a) arbitrary minimal and maximal time lags between the starting and completion times of activities and (b) the non-regular objective function of maximizing the net present value of the project with positive and/or negative cash flows associated with the activities. To the best of our knowledge, the literature on the RCPSPDC-GPR is completely void. We present a depth-first branch-and-bound algorithm in which the nodes in the search tree represent the original project network extended …

From Entrepot To Nic: Economic And Structural Policy Aspects Of Singapore's Development, Jochen Wirtz, Thomas Menkhoff Jan 1998

From Entrepot To Nic: Economic And Structural Policy Aspects Of Singapore's Development, Jochen Wirtz, Thomas Menkhoff

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper describes the development of Singapore from an entrepot to an industrialized economy and analyzes the role of its structural and industrial policies as one important factor in this success story. The advance of Singapore to an industrialized economy can be structured into four phases. Phase I, the early phase from 1959 to the mid-1960s is characterized by an import substitution policy followed together with Malaysia. Phase II describes the enhanced export-orientation and industrialization from 1967 to 1973. Phase III includes the industrial restructuring from 1973 to 1984. Phase IV describes the development towards diversification of the industrial base …

Lee Kuan Yew And His Use Of Spatial-Orientational Metaphors, Siow Heng Ong Jan 1998

Lee Kuan Yew And His Use Of Spatial-Orientational Metaphors, Siow Heng Ong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The Prime Minister's message to the nation after Singapore separated from Malaysia was one of consolidation and moving ahead. This was not an easy task for the speaker as the year before Singapore separated from Malaysia, the race riots had claimed 34 lives.1 These riots were even more prolonged than the Hertogh riots of 1950. Maintaining racial harmony and social integration was an uphill task. The hope for consolidation and a united sense of nationhood seemed distant.
