What Do Consistency And Personableness In The Interview Signal To Applicants? Investigating Indirect Effects On Organizational Attractiveness Through Symbolic Organizational Attributes, Annika Wilhelmy, Martin Kleinmann, Klaus G. Melchers, Filip Lievens
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Personnel selection research has recognized the importance of providing applicants with both standardized (i.e., “consistent”) and individualized (i.e., “personable”) treatment during interviews. However, research has yet to examine the mechanisms underlying the effects of perceived consistency and personableness in the interview on applicants’ attraction to organizations. Drawing from signaling theory, we investigate how interview consistency and personableness impact organizational attractiveness. To this end, we developed a conceptual model that proposes that applicants interpret perceived interview consistency and personableness as signals about what the organization is like in terms of symbolic organizational attributes (organizational competence and benevolence, Lievens and Highhouse 2003), …
Trust And Local Bias, Chi Shen Wei, Lei Zhang
Trust And Local Bias, Chi Shen Wei, Lei Zhang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper examines the effect of social trust on local bias. Our evidence suggests that institutional investors located in high-trust regions of the United States exhibit lower local bias. Moreover, we find that high-trust investors are better diversified, suggesting that trust helps accomplish greater diversification. The results are not due to firm, demographic, or local economic characteristics. Additional analysis reveals that the documented informational advantage in local holdings exists only in low-trust regions. We show that this finding is consistent with a trust explanation.
The Flash Crash: A Cautionary Tale About Highly Fragmented Markets, Albert J. Menkveld, Bart Zhou Yueshen
The Flash Crash: A Cautionary Tale About Highly Fragmented Markets, Albert J. Menkveld, Bart Zhou Yueshen
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
A breakdown of cross-market arbitrage activity could make markets more fragile and result in price crashes. We provide suggestive evidence for this novel channel based on a high-frequency analysis of the most salient crash in recent history: The Flash Crash. We further show that such an event can be extremely costly for a large seller trading in a particular venue as the seller effectively relies on local liquidity supply only. These findings highlight the vulnerability of today's highly fragmented markets.

Optimal Control And Cooperative Game Theory Based Analysis Of A By-Product Synergy System, Mahmut Parlar, Sharafali Moosa, Mark Goh
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In this paper, we propose a framework to analyse the setting up of an industrial symbiosis system. The establishment of such a system entails implementation of expensive technologies by the companies so as to convert wastes into energy and other mutually beneficial materials. Much of the literature on modeling industrial symbiosis do not consider this important aspect of high conversion costs. Further, such a cooperative effort will be sustainable only if the high cost of implementing technologies is compensated by sharing of the benefits in a fair and satisfactory manner. Towards this end, first at a general level, we addres …

Successful Venture Building: What Matters! An Empirical Examination Of Effective Incubation Practices, Patrick Thng
Successful Venture Building: What Matters! An Empirical Examination Of Effective Incubation Practices, Patrick Thng
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Incubator models have evolved since the first known US incubator in 1959. From the first generation of a facilities-focused incubator model in the 1960s to the fourth generation of emerging models, commonly referred to as, the “Accelerator” model and the “Venture Builder” model.
Since 2006, there has been a significant increase in the number of venture builders and accelerators. Yet very little is known about a) their performance and the antecedents; b) the key differences between venture builders and accelerators; c) the factors and practices that characterise highly successful venture builders and d) their (venture builders)comparative advantages or disadvantages compared …
Obstacles To Accessing Pro-Poor Microcredit Programs In China: Evidence From Penggan Village, Guizhou, Deborah Shu Yi Tan, Track Tze Tuan Tan, Shao Tong Ling, John A. Donaldson
Obstacles To Accessing Pro-Poor Microcredit Programs In China: Evidence From Penggan Village, Guizhou, Deborah Shu Yi Tan, Track Tze Tuan Tan, Shao Tong Ling, John A. Donaldson
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Why do poor farmers not take up microcredit loans, even when the terms are designed to be pro-poor? Fieldwork in a village in China’s Guizhou province revealed a puzzle: although the county government had designed a loan program that was intended to be unusually pro-poor, only three of the 349 eligible households had successfully applied. This article analyzes three potential hypotheses: farmer failure (risk aversion or financial illiteracy), market failure (lack of viable or stable market opportunities), and institutional failure (structural or institutional barriers precluding taking up loans). Based on evidence from intensive interviews, we reject the first hypothesis, and …
How To Optimize Storage Classes In A Unit-Load Warehouse, Marcus Ang, Yun Fong Lim
How To Optimize Storage Classes In A Unit-Load Warehouse, Marcus Ang, Yun Fong Lim
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We study a problem of optimizing storage classes in a unit-load warehouse such that the total travel cost is minimized. This is crucial to the operational efficiency of unit-load warehouses, which constitute a crit- ical part of a supply chain. We propose a novel approach called the FB method to solve the problem. The FB method is suitable for general receiving-dock and shipping-dock locations that may not coincide. The FB method first ranks the locations according to the frequencies that they are visited, which are estimated by a linear program based on the warehouse’s layout as well as the products’ …
Understanding The Connection Of Performance And Z-Scores For Manufacturing Firms In South Korea, S.L. Foo, Shaakalya Pathak
Understanding The Connection Of Performance And Z-Scores For Manufacturing Firms In South Korea, S.L. Foo, Shaakalya Pathak
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
South Korea is a key leading economy in the Asia Pacific region. This study examines the relationship between the financial health, as measured by the Altman Z-Score, and corporate performance, as measured by the Return on Equity (ROE), of listed manufacturing companies in this market. A linear regression has been conducted between these variables to determine the magnitude and direction of their relationships. The trends of Z-Scores over a five-year period have also been analysed. The analysis covers the period from 2013 to 2017 (inclusive) and yields a statistically positive correlation between ROE and the Z-Score for the market. South …
Cooling Measures And Housing Wealth: Evidence From Singapore, Wolfgang K. Hardle, Rainer Schulz, Taojun Xie
Cooling Measures And Housing Wealth: Evidence From Singapore, Wolfgang K. Hardle, Rainer Schulz, Taojun Xie
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Excessive house price growth was at the heart of the financial crisis in 2007/08. Since then, many countries have added cooling measures to their regulatory frameworks. It has been found that these measures can indeed control price growth, but no one has examined whether this has adverse consequences for the housing wealth distribution. We examine this for Singapore, which started in 2009 to target price growth over ten rounds in total. We find that welfare from housing wealth in the last round might not be higher than before 2009. This depends on the deflator used to convert nominal into real …
When "More" Seems Like Less: Differential Price Framing Increases The Choice Share Of Higher-Priced Options, Thomas Allard, David J. Hardisty, Dale Griffin
When "More" Seems Like Less: Differential Price Framing Increases The Choice Share Of Higher-Priced Options, Thomas Allard, David J. Hardisty, Dale Griffin
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Four experiments supported by six supplemental studies show that premium but higher-priced products (e.g., direct flights, larger-capacity data storage devices) are more popular when the additional cost is made explicit using differential price framing (DPF; e.g., "for $20 more") rather than being left implicit, as in standard inclusive price framing (IPF; e.g., "for $60 total"). The DPF effect is driven by pricing focalism: relative to IPF, DPF creates a focus on the price difference, which, because it is smaller than the total price, leads to lower perceived expensiveness and thus greater choice share for the premium option. This price framing …
Understanding The Fundamentals Of Freight Markets Volatility, Kian Guan Lim, Nikos K. Nomikos, Nelson Yap
Understanding The Fundamentals Of Freight Markets Volatility, Kian Guan Lim, Nikos K. Nomikos, Nelson Yap
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We analyse empirically the drivers of freight market volatility. We use several macroeconomic and shipping-related factors that are known to affect the supply and demand for shipping and examine their impact on the term structure of freight options implied volatilities (IV). We find that the level of IVs is affected by the level of the spot rate, the slope of the forward curve, as well as by both demand and supply factors, especially the former. We demonstrate that the relation between the volatility of futures prices and the slope of the forward curve is non-monotonic and convex, that is, it …

This dissertation research investigated the potential predictors of returning Filipino expatriates’ and their sustainable job success. This research investigates the extent of firm level differences such as a companies’ global engagement, repatriate support programs and individual differences such as the repatriates’ compensation, alignment of their personal goals with organizational values, and the level of patriotism to predict their job success upon return to the Philippines. The research employed a grounded theory approach to develop the hypotheses and was executed using a survey methodology. The results were analyzed using a variety of quantitative and statistical techniques. A total of 141 respondents …
State-Owned Enterprises As Bribe Payers: The Role Of Institutional Environment, Noman Shaheer, Jingtao Yi, Sali Li, Liang Chen
State-Owned Enterprises As Bribe Payers: The Role Of Institutional Environment, Noman Shaheer, Jingtao Yi, Sali Li, Liang Chen
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Our paper draws attention to a neglected channel of corruption—the bribe payments by state-owned enterprises (SOEs). This is an important phenomenon as bribe payments by SOEs fruitlessly waste national resources, compromising public welfare and national prosperity. Using a large dataset of 30,249 firms from 50 countries, we show that, in general, SOEs are less likely to pay bribes for achieving organizational objectives owing to their political connectivity. However, in deteriorated institutional environments, SOEs may be subjected to potential managerial rent-seeking behaviors, which disproportionately increase SOE bribe propensity relative to privately owned enterprises. Specifically, our findings highlight the importance of fostering …
The World Predictive Power Of U.S. Equity Market Skewness Risk, Jian Chen, Fuwei Jiang, Shuyu Xue, Jiaquan Yao
The World Predictive Power Of U.S. Equity Market Skewness Risk, Jian Chen, Fuwei Jiang, Shuyu Xue, Jiaquan Yao
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study investigates the cross-country impact of U.S. equity market skewness risk. We find that a large decrease in the U.S. market skewness significantly predicts higher future returns on international equity markets. The predictability remains significant after controlling for a set of U.S. and local forecasting variables. Furthermore, we find strong predictability in- an out-of-sample setting and the predictability delivers a large economic value. The U.S. market skewness also forecasts U.S. economic recessions and international market conditions, consistent with the international three-moment capital asset pricing model (three-moment CAPM) and the intertemporal capital asset pricing model (ICAPM).
Family Firms And Labor Market Regulation, Morten Bennedsen, Sterling Huang, Hannes F. Wagner, Stefan Zeume
Family Firms And Labor Market Regulation, Morten Bennedsen, Sterling Huang, Hannes F. Wagner, Stefan Zeume
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
In a panel across twenty-eight countries over 10 years, we show that family firms on average enjoy performance advantages over nonfamily firms only when labor markets are less regulated. We confirm this result in a matched firm sample using a survey-based instrument as a family control. Furthermore, family firms exhibit lower variation in employment levels in less-regulated labor markets, supporting the notion that labor relations drive family firms’ performance advantages. Our results are consistent with the notion that both family ownership and labor market reforms provide employment protection and thus partly substitute as governance mechanisms.
Deciphering Financial Statements In Annual Reports, Themin Suwardy, Yew Kee Ho, Edmund Keung
Deciphering Financial Statements In Annual Reports, Themin Suwardy, Yew Kee Ho, Edmund Keung
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
In the first of a three-part weekly series on financial literacy, SMU Dean of Postgraduate Professional Programmes and Associate Professor of Accounting (Practice) Themin Suwardy, SIT’s Professor Ho Yew Kee and Associate Professor Edmund Keong from NUS discussed the importance of learning to read and analyse financial statements. They opined that being able to decipher financial statements is critical if an investor wants to have a real understanding of a company's profitability, liquidity and cash position. This will equip them with useful information to make informed decisions.
Analysis Of Credit Enhancement Of Financing Guarantee Company, Tiewei Zhang
Analysis Of Credit Enhancement Of Financing Guarantee Company, Tiewei Zhang
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
In China, the financing problem of SMEs has been concerned for a long time, but it has not been effectively solved. At present, the development of financing guarantee companies (FGCs) providing credit enhancement services for SMEs is facing severe challenges. Essentially, financing guarantee is a special kind of creditor’s right (debt investor’s rights). The essence of creditor's right is the seller position of put options. Because the return-risk structure of creditor's right is seriously asymmetric, debt investors should follow the prudent and conservative operating principle. The "5Ws" principle or "5Cs" principle of bank loan business is the embodiment of this …
