A Demand And Supply Game Exploring Global Supply Chains, Bei Hong
Research Collection School Of Economics
In this article, the author describes a classroom experiment in which participants make decisions to achieve the lowest-cost production. Student volunteers acting as smartphone companies are provided with confidential information representing their own cost of production and are asked to make trade decisions to form a supply chain at the lowest possible cost. This interactive classroom experiment facilitates an understanding and appreciation of the basic demand and supply model. Students also explore the motivations, facilitators, and impediments of global supply chains. Suggestions are made to expand the game by incorporating more sophisticated models of the global supply chain, and also …

Redefining Corporate Strategies And Functions, Havovi Joshi
Redefining Corporate Strategies And Functions, Havovi Joshi
Asian Management Insights
Traditional corporate planning—marked by a march towards a series of deliverables, detailed spreadsheets that project costs and revenue into the future, and review meetings according to an annual calendar—is not enough to succeed in today’s business environment. Ken Favaro, Senior Partner at Booz & Company, warned leaders of the common trap of confusing vision, mission, purpose, plans or goals for the real work of strategy. He explained that if these five are the cart and strategy is the horse, leaders who put the cart ahead of the horse often end up with no horse at all.

Smrtfridge: Iot-Based, User Interaction-Driven Food Item & Quantity Sensing, Amit Sharma, Archan Misra, Vengateswaran Subramaniam, Youngki Lee
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We present SmrtFridge, a consumer-grade smart fridge prototype that demonstrates two key capabilities: (a) identify the individual food items that users place in or remove from a fridge, and (b) estimate the residual quantity of food items inside a refrigerated container (opaque or transparent). Notably, both of these inferences are performed unobtrusively, without requiring any explicit user action or tagging of food objects. To achieve these capabilities, SmrtFridge uses a novel interaction-driven, multi-modal sensing pipeline, where Infrared (IR) and RGB video sensing, triggered whenever a user interacts naturally with the fridge, is used to extract a foreground visual image of …
Transformational Leadership And Follower Risk-Taking: Examining The Effects Of Psychological Safety And Power Distance Orientation, Josephine Poh Tin Kang
Transformational Leadership And Follower Risk-Taking: Examining The Effects Of Psychological Safety And Power Distance Orientation, Josephine Poh Tin Kang
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Risk-taking is a necessary part of business, yet little is known about how leaders might impact follower risk-taking. A theoretical model is developed in which transformational leaders are hypothesized to indirectly affect follower risk-taking through follower psychological safety. Additionally, this partially mediated effect is theorised to be moderated by follower power distance orientation. Data were collected over two time periods from followers (N = 331) to test the hypothesized model. Results provided limited support for the hypothesized model. Specifically, results indicated that transformational leadership positively affected psychological safety, but psychological safety did not predict follower risk-taking. Power distance orientation did …
An Examination Of The Effectiveness Of A Training Programme To Improve Decision Making In Insurance Risk Underwriting, Gavin Raj Maistry
An Examination Of The Effectiveness Of A Training Programme To Improve Decision Making In Insurance Risk Underwriting, Gavin Raj Maistry
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This dissertation studies the effectiveness of a training programme to improve decision making in insurance risk underwriting. A key component of insurance risk underwriting decisions is qualitative judgement, in addition to quantitative analytical modelling. In the training of insurance underwriters, great strides have been made on the analytical side. However, the training of judgement, both intuitive and deliberate, has largely been ignored. The aim of this research proposal is to design and test a training programme to improve judgement in insurance underwriting.
Our research extends the script training concept, used extensively in medical training, to the domain of insurance underwriting …
Spillover Effects Of Clients’ Tax Enforcement On Financial Statement Auditors: Evidence From A Discontinuity Design, Travis K. Chow, Jeffrey Pittman, Muzhi Wang, Le Zhao
Spillover Effects Of Clients’ Tax Enforcement On Financial Statement Auditors: Evidence From A Discontinuity Design, Travis K. Chow, Jeffrey Pittman, Muzhi Wang, Le Zhao
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
We examine the impact of clients’ tax enforcement on financial statement auditors. In a regression discontinuity design, we exploit the firm-registration-date-based application of a new rule that assigns firms to two different tax enforcement regimes. Our analysis implies that auditors exert less effort–evident in lower audit fees and shorter audit report lags–when their clients are monitored by the more stringent tax authority. In results supporting that audit quality improves in this situation despite the fall in auditor effort, we report that clients subject to tougher tax enforcement exhibit a lower incidence of accounting restatements and tax-related restatements. Additionally, we find …

Examining Learning Transformation In Project-Based Learning Process, Gary Pan, Poh Sun Seow, Grace Koh
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
This paper presents a learning transformation framework for analyzing how learning evolves during project-based learning process. Here we adopt Lewin’s (1951) change theory as an analytical lens to examine the project-based learning curriculum at a University called UNI-X. This is a major contribution to PBL literature as little is known about the dynamics of learning during PBL process. In fact, the learning transformation framework can serve as the basis for further research in PBL process. For educators, this study provides them with useful insights on how to break project members’ escalating commitment to previous failing ideas and accept alternative workable …
That Could Have Been Me: Director Deaths, Mortality Salience And Ceo Prosocial Behavior, Guoli Chen, Craig Crossland, Sterling Huang
That Could Have Been Me: Director Deaths, Mortality Salience And Ceo Prosocial Behavior, Guoli Chen, Craig Crossland, Sterling Huang
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Mortality salience—the awareness of the inevitability of death—is often traumatic. However, it can also be associated with a range of positive, self-transcendent cognitive responses, such as a greater desire to help others, contribute to society, and make a more meaningful contribution in one’s life and career. In this study, we provide evidence of a link between chief executive officer (CEO) mortality salience—triggered by the death of a director at the same firm—and a subsequent increase in firm-level prosocial behavior or corporate social responsibility (CSR). We further show that this core relationship is amplified in situations where the death of the …

Purpose: Organizations (data gatherers in the context) drown in data while at the same time seeking managerially relevant insights. Academics (data hunters) have to deal with decreasing respondent participation and escalating costs of data collection while at the same time seeking to increase the managerial relevance of their research. The purpose of this paper is to provide a framework on how, managers and academics can collaborate better to leverage each other's resources. Design/methodology/approach: This research synthesizes the academic and the managerial literature on the realities and priorities of practitioners and academics with regard to data. Based on the literature, reflections …
Strategic Categories And Competition: Significant Clustering For Strategic Groups, Charles Carroll, Howard Thomas
Strategic Categories And Competition: Significant Clustering For Strategic Groups, Charles Carroll, Howard Thomas
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Purpose: Strategic groups research has been hampered by the poor alignment between theory and methods. This has been due in large part to the lack of significance tests for cluster analysis. Now that significance tests are available, the theoretical and methodological implications are discussed. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach: The theory behind strategic groups is reframed to capitalize on the available significance tests. Subsequently, the significance tests are also modified to fit the proposed theory. Due to this integrative approach, this is both a theoretical and a methodological paper. Findings: In lieu of significance tests, finding differences …
The Trend In Short Selling And The Cross Section Of Stock Returns, Zhaobo Zhu, Xinrui Duan, Jun Tu
The Trend In Short Selling And The Cross Section Of Stock Returns, Zhaobo Zhu, Xinrui Duan, Jun Tu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper documents that stocks with a decreasing (increasing) trend in their short selling as proxied by the long-term change in short interest experience significant and positive (negative) abnormal returns. Moreover, the positive abnormal returns have larger absolute values and are more persistent. The return predictability of the trend in short selling is not subsumed by the level of short interest and other well-known determinants of stock returns. Investor sentiment does not affect the profitability of the trend strategy. Our results suggest that market participants underreact to public information on short interest and that short sellers are sophisticated investors.
Relative Strength Over Investment Horizons And Stock Returns, Zhaobo Zhu, Xinrui Duan, Jun Tu
Relative Strength Over Investment Horizons And Stock Returns, Zhaobo Zhu, Xinrui Duan, Jun Tu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In this article, the authors propose a simple and novel measure of relative strength over investment horizons that synthesizes short- and intermediate-term price information. The relative-strength measure compares the short-term price trend with the intermediate-term price trend. The relative strength strategy generates substantial profits, which are greater than a simple sum of traditional short-term reversal and momentum profits. The superior performance of the relative strength strategy is evident after risk adjustments for various factor models and is robust across subperiods and different market conditions. These findings seem consistent with investor conservatism and the idea that investors are slow to adjust …

The Who, Where, What, How And When Of Market Entry, Gideon Markman, Peter Gianiodis, G. Tyge Payne, Christopher Tucci, Igor Filatotchev, Reddi Kotha, Eric Gedajlovic
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This introductory, along with the eight articles contained within this Special Issue, highlights and brings greater clarity to entrant-incumbent interactions and to firm movement – when entrants traverse market territories for the creation and/or delivery of offerings, where ‘markets’ include service or product categories, technology or resource spaces, industries, sectors and/or geographies. Collectively, this Special Issues explains that firm movement across market boundaries is highly consequential, influencing resource-capability mixes inside firms, interfirm relations, market logic and industry value chains, and of course, people, communities and even nations. Specifically, we develop a field-wide perspective of market entry by expanding on the …
Automated Theme Search In Ico Whitepapers, Chuanjie Fu, Andrew Koh, Paul Griffin
Automated Theme Search In Ico Whitepapers, Chuanjie Fu, Andrew Koh, Paul Griffin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The authors explore how topic modeling can be used to automate the categorization of initial coin offerings (ICOs) into different topics (e.g., finance, media, information, professional services, health and social, natural resources) based solely on the content within the whitepapers. This tool has been developed by fitting a latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) model to the text extracted from the ICO whitepapers. After evaluating the automated categorization of whitepapers using statistical and human judgment methods, it is determined that there is enough evidence to conclude that the LDA model appropriately categorizes the ICO whitepapers. The results from a two-population proportion test …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We document economically large momentum profits when sorting ETFs on returns over the past two to four years. A value-weighted, long-short strategy based on ETF momentum delivers Carhart (1997) four-factor alphas of up to 1.20% per month. Neither cross-sectional stock momentum nor co-variation with macroeconomic and liquidity risks can explain ETF momentum. Instead, the post-holding period returns are most consonant with the behavioral story of delayed overreaction. While ETF momentum survives multiple adjustments for transaction costs, it may be difficult to arbitrage as the profits are volatile and concentrated in ETFs with high idiosyncratic volatility or that hold low-analyst-coverage stocks.

Managers tend to inflate the feedback they give to their direct reports, particularly when giving bad news. And by presenting subpar performance more positively than they should, managers make it impossible for employees to learn, damaging their careers and, often, the company.
