Social Capital And Cost Of Debt: Evidence From Chinese Ceo Network Centrality, Yiping Chen, Yuan G. Shan, Jimin Wang, Xinxin Yang, Junru Zhang

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Using a unique dataset comprising 6313 firm-year observations for Chinese listed firms between 2008 and 2017, we investigate the impact of CEO social capital on cost of debt. Our results show that CEO social capital is negatively related to cost of debt, and the impact of CEO social capital in environments with a low degree of marketization or social trust is more pronounced than in environments with a high degree of marketization or social trust. Moreover, our results reveal that two potential mechanisms, discretionary accruals and information disclosure quality, mediate the impact of CEO social capital on cost of debt.

What Accounts For The Effect Of Sustainability Engagement On Stock Price Crash Risk During The Covid-19 Pandemic—Agency Theory Or Legitimacy Theory?, Junru Zhang, Chen Zheng, Yuan G. Shan

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

In this study, we conduct a textual analysis of the third-party disclosure of corporate sustainability news focused on the Standard and Poor's 500 firms in the United States market during the first and second quarter of 2020. We find a positive relationship between corporate sustainability news release and firm-specific stock price crash risk. This finding is surprising, but it indeed aligns with agency theory. It indicates that the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic exacerbated the tendency of managers under increasing financial pressure to use the sustainability information release as a mechanism to mask and withhold bad news for extended periods at …

Characteristics Of Place For Food Destinations: A Foodscape Perspective, Andy Widyanta, Eerang Park

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

There is a lack of understanding of the fundamental relation between food and place and the attributes of the production and consumption of food experiences that collectively make a place a food tourism destination. This chapter explores how a food destination is characterised through a foodscape lens together with the local stakeholders’ and tourists’ viewpoints of commercialised food tourism activities in an emerging food tourism destination. The results reveal five attributes that shape a place as a food tourism destination. These attributes are: connection of food to culinary landscape; social interactions; food quality; price; and linkages between food and agriculture.

Will Return-To-Office Mandates Prevent Proximity Bias For Employees Working From Home?, Sue Williamson, Uma Jogulu, Judy Lundy, Helen Taylor

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This Practice and Policy article examines return-to-office mandates, the latest human resource controversy. These mandates are an organisational directive for employees who have been working from home to return to working in their employer's premise. Drawing on the literature and our research on working from home and hybrid working, we consider whether mandates may prevent proximity bias. We conclude that mandates requiring employees to return to the office or caps which limit working from home are not only unnecessary, but may have negative consequences. In particular, mandates may cause employee resentment, while caps limit flexibility and autonomy. We therefore do …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The emergence of cryptocurrencies has caught the attention worldwide. Some parties have considered issuing cryptocurrencies an excellent opportunity to raise capital and other businesses. However, the factors that foster the proliferation of cryptocurrency are not fully explored. This paper documented a comparative case study of USDT (a successful stablecoin) and EOS (a successful non-stable cryptocurrency). Based on our findings and previous literature, we suggested a Technology-Institution-Market (TIM) framework for cryptocurrency proliferation. We also elaborated on previous FinTech product development and adoption theories and provided some practical implications for cryptocurrency investors, issuers and regulators.

Customer Experience Quality With Social Robots: Does Trust Matter?, Sanjit K. Roy, Gaganpreet Singh, Saalem Sadeque, Richard L. Gruner

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Although service providers increasingly adopt social robots, much remains to be learned about what influences customers' experiences with robots. To address this issue, this study investigates the relationships among customer equity drivers (i.e., value equity, brand equity and relationship equity), trust in social robots, and trust in service providers. Specifically, we hypothesize that customer equity drivers influence trust in social robots and trust in service providers. We also propose that customer equity drivers influence customer experience quality in the context of social robots and that trust in social robots and trust in service providers mediate these relationships. The study used …

Authentic leadership studies are often criticised for the limited use of causally defined research designs. To advance scholarship is this area, this article presents a scoping review on the use of experimental designs to examine causality in authentic leadership. Eleven publications were identified, which presented 16 experiments that met the inclusion criteria. Generally, these experiments tested authentic leadership as an antecedent; were conducted online; used a one-factor design; involved large samples, typically of working adults or residents; involved a manipulation check; involved the use of written vignettes to manipulate levels of authentic leadership; included counterfactual conditions; culminated with outcomes pertaining …

Authentic Leadership: 20-Year Review Editorial, Andrei A. Lux, Kevin B. Lowe Jan 2024

Authentic Leadership: 20-Year Review Editorial, Andrei A. Lux, Kevin B. Lowe

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Our field has reached a critical juncture. Authentic leadership, which once promised to illuminate how leaders inspire and influence through genuine actions, has become mired in conceptual ambiguity and ideological bias. Much of the research is based on evaluations of behaviour conflated with antecedents and outcomes, presuming an oversimplified, positive view of authenticity. To advance, we must refocus on what authentic leaders actually do – their discrete behaviours – as signals of leadership. In this editorial, we redefine authentic leadership through signalling theory to address unresolved critiques and provide a platform for meaningful progress. We then summarise and synthesise the …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Leadership emergence is fraught with pervasive gender stereotypes, and women remain underrepresented in senior leadership roles, particularly in healthcare organisations. We apply ecological systems theory to explain how environmental factors enable or inhibit women’s leadership emergence in healthcare settings. We interviewed 17 senior female leaders in the Australian healthcare sector to explore how gender-related perceptions affected their leadership journeys. Five themes emerged that challenge existing narratives: men supported women’s advancement; women impeded other women’s progress; vulnerability was a leadership strength; ambitious women were ostracised; and women were ‘given’ leadership opportunities rather than actively pursuing them. By situating these findings within …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This paper investigates how family events interacting with entrepreneurs’ psychological affect and overconfidence impact new venture viability. We use panel data from the Australian Household, Income and Labor Dynamics survey, focusing on family event-induced psychological affect entrepreneurs experience as a predictor of new venture survival. Our accelerated failure time model shows that although negative family events interact with entrepreneur overconfidence to spur cautious behaviour, positive events interacting with overconfidence have the biggest impact (negative) on new ventures. The study enhances our understanding of the embeddedness of family in the entrepreneurial process and challenges past research by revealing how positive family …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Effectively addressing overwork culture in business remains a challenge, despite growing concerns about its negative impacts on employee wellbeing and productivity. This paper investigates corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives and stakeholder management promoted by large Japanese companies to address overwork culture. Based on interviews with managers and stakeholders from 31 companies, the study reveals that despite being part of CSR, overwork reduction initiatives often come into conflict with entrenched institutional pressures. These pressures are embedded in a cultural-cognitive and institutional context that prioritises quality and cooperation over individual productivity. We argue that improving stakeholder relationships is vital for developing a …

Developing A Weighted Model To Measure Knowledge Diffusion In A Tourism Destination Network, Hossein Raisi, Llandis Barratt-Pugh, Rodolfo Baggio, Gregory Willson, Sam Huang, Kourosh Esfandiar

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Efficient knowledge transfer enhances tourism destination competitiveness. Multiple factors, however, affect knowledge transfer, making it a complex process to quantify. To address this complexity, we developed a quantitative tool by integrating a diffusion model with the major antecedents of knowledge transfer identified in the knowledge management literature. We applied this model in the Western Australian tourism industry and demonstrated its practicality. The proposed model provides a quantitative tool for destination management organizations to monitor, assess and improve the efficiency of knowledge diffusion within their tourism destinations. Such improved knowledge diffusion is critical in strengthening a destination's innovative capabilities and competitiveness.
