As many librarians learned in last year's AALL presentation on facilitation, a well-facilitated meeting can transform a regular work session into an extraordinarily productive event. Participants learned that a well-crafted agenda, thoughtful ground rules, optimal meeting space, and detailed minutes can all set the stage for a successful meeting.

However, meetings can still go awry. A poorly facilitated meeting can make everyone dread meetings even if the meeting has been well-planned. This presentation was part of a staff workshop focused on empirical methods and applied research. This includes a basic overview of regression with matrix algebra, maximum likelihood, inference, and model assumptions. Distinctions are made between paradigms related to classical statistical methods and algorithmic approaches. The presentation concludes with a brief discussion of generalization error, data partitioning, decision trees, and neural networks.

The 2007 international economic crisis may have begun in capitalism’s heartland with credit default swops and sub-prime mortages, nevertheless some of its most dramatic manifestations have been at the edge. In Europe, the peripheral economies of Iceland, Greece and Ireland have manifested crises that have shaken Europe to the core, and generated crisis discourse that may well prove central. This study demonstrates that perceived authenticity of a cultural heritage site should not be overlooked when determining reasons for a decline in tourism. The quality:price ratio of this particular site was shown as a contributing factor to its decline in tourism, but an underlying current of discontent was identified in regards to the perception of the site as a part of Singapore’s distinctive history.

A collaborative project is described. Students in a web design class were asked to contact local businesses and help them create their web site (collection of related and interconnected web pages). Two phases of the project are described, planning and implementation. Planning defines the purpose and the target audience and also includes a sketch of the website's organization. The project is suitable for both traditional and online classes. Ideally, session participants should have some experience or interest in teaching web design but anyone who wants to know how to help students work collaboratively with the community is welcome to attend.

Commercial models have been applied to most aspects of Not-for-profit management and operation. There are very good reasons why this might be advantageous to the Not-for-profit sector generally and to funders and boards of management particularly. Such reasons include the fact that the commercial sector has developed far more mature governance models than the Not-for-profit sector, that advisors to the sector are far more adept at providing solutions based around these commercial models and that boards of management are more likely to be able to quantify their achievements using such measures.
