SC Upstate Research Symposium
The Hazel Green Academy Revitalization Project is a community service-based project focused on restoring and repurposing the Hazel Green Academy (HGA). Established in 1880, HGA was a residential college-preparatory school located in Eastern Wolfe County, KY. At its height, HGA served not only as a school but also as a source of education and community events. Throughout the years, the academy expanded its facilities and resources to benefit both the students and the community. However, as free public schools emerged in the surrounding area during the 1930s, HGA faced a decline in enrollment. Consequently, HGA struggled for the next few …

Time To Get Technical About Technical Services: Reorganizing Technical Services At Bowling Green State University, Patricia Falk
OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions
Technical Services in libraries has been undergoing changes in the past ten years and Bowling Green State University (BGSU) is no exception. Changes in technology, processes, and attrition in staffing have been just a few of the reasons for this significant change. University Libraries (UL) at BGSU has recently made a change in its organizational structure that has been affected by some of these factors. Previously, our Technical Services area included numerous classified staff catalogers, a head of cataloging, head of serials, head of acquisitions, an e-resources librarian, and several other support staff members to assist with processing and cataloging …

Training Buffet: Self-Service Acquisitions Training For Librarians And Staff, Cara Calabrese, Ginny Boehme
OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions
While acquisitions workflows and tools have updated over the years, our training methods have seemingly not evolved with the same speed. At ALA Annual there were a few conversations about teaching and training new acquisitions staff. Many emphasized that learning on the job was one of the best tools, and many of our colleagues have had success with implementing asynchronous instructional materials. For example, after a colleague was able to develop a copyright course, she was then able to turn her attention to other pressing tasks. Why can't we do the same for acquisitions?
In 2022, Acquisitions partnered with Instruction …

During the 2021/2022 fiscal year, the University of Kentucky Libraries decided to take the opportunity to make service updates while workflow was altered or restricted by the pandemic. The Main Campus and Medical Center Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery services at the University of Kentucky Libraries merged in order to streamline services and resources for both our patrons and staff. Having assessed this idea in the past, it was determined that this would be a suitable time to implement this change. Some of the highlights include merging OCLC symbols, reorganizing staff responsibilities and workflow, centralizing the patron interface, and …

The Graduate College would like to update the current faculty search page to filter search results by Department and Research in addition to Name. With the current system, a person who wanted to find an unknown professor based upon a department or an interest in research topic would be unable to search because the only option is to type the professor's name. We have created a website linked to a database containing graduate faculty that is able to search by name, filter by department, and search through the professors' listed research topics. This website will be much more useful and …

Marketing Campaign For Pope County Habitat For Humanity, Hailey Addison
ATU Research Symposium
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that assists families by building them homes. Habitat raises funds, interviews families in need and chooses a candidate, builds a home, and then gives the house to the family. What sets this organization however, is that they give a “hand up, not a hand out”. Instead of just giving them a house, they require the family to help build it. Also, the family is expected to pay an affordable mortgage back to Habitat. This philosophy promotes a sense of ownership in these new homeowners, and hopefully that will encourage them to take good …

While researching Avian Influenza (AI) in the United States, we have found that it has significantly impacted 47 states. Four main AI types have an impact on poultry farms. Avian Influenza can be reduced by taking preventative methods such as biosecurity and culling birds to have a healthy flock on the farm. Since 2022 egg-laying hens have been affected by the Avian Influenza Virus, causing egg inventories to become lower. Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has affected farmers tremendously; because of this, farmers must worry about their families' source of income, their workers and the workers' families' source of income, …
