Brain Drain in Nebraska: What do the data show?

Introduction

Nebraska is a growing state, but it is a slowly growing state. Over the last decade, population growth in Nebraska, at 0.6% per year, has lagged the national average rate of 1.0%. This gap in growth rates is large in real terms. Given a current population of approximately 1.8 million persons, Nebraska would grow by approximately 18,000 persons per year if it grew at the national growth rate of 1.0% per year. Instead, the state only adds about 11,000 persons per year. A lower growth rate results in a loss …

Entrepreneurs are not gamblers, believes Phillip Phan, management professor at Johns Hopkins University. He is also Tommie Goh visiting professor of entrepreneurship and business at the Lee Kong Chian School of Business, Singapore Management University (SMU). Phan delivered a lecture in Singapore recently about the essence of entrepreneurship, how to identify entrepreneurial opportunities, and the role of governments in supporting entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurship education is now a key part of the tertiary-level education landscape in many countries around the globe. Institutions are creating the type of learning environments that are conducive to encouraging and supporting student enterprise and graduate entrepreneurship. Going beyond notions of employability, entrepreneurship capacities enable graduates to create their own futures, exploit the opportunities that emerge in their complex and unpredictable worlds, and better contribute to economic development and well-being. The objective at the centre of the IPREG (Innovative Policy Research for Economic Growth) project is the facilitation of a " network of networks" needed to address one of Europe's critical issues-empirically relevant research on growth policy. IPREG is an established "network of networks" encompassing researchers, policy makers and business people in twelve countries: Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden and UK. The Centre will launch an inaugural volume, Social Space, in August 2008. Lien Centre Board Chairman, Willie Cheng, talked to Knowledge@SMU about the book, the overall aims of the centre, and his own thinking on social enterprise, innovation and entrepreneurship. Cheng was formerly country managing director for Accenture and is actively involved in the nonprofit sector in Singapore.

This presentation focuses on the Singapore Management University approach to teaching entrepreneurship through classes, the environment of the students, and basic infrastructure elements such as knowledge, information, and resources. It defines the term itself as the process of doing something different or new as well as creating wealth for oneself and adding value to society. In the aftermath of SME and the bigger enterprises in Indonesia, there emerges a suspicion that due to the lack of financial and technical capacity in competing with the bigger enterprises, SME conducts various violation of trademark law. Now, the essence of trademark protection is at stake, along with the struggle for SME’s life. The challenge for the future will be ensuring greater harmonization of the protection for SME and at the same time, also for trademark. This paper examines the prominent roles of trademark law in dealing business and its implementation by SME.

Pilot Study Of 8 Smes In Pakistan, Ejaz Mian

These cases study small firms (with 1-50 employees) in Pakistan to determine marketing factors that lead to success. Information is gathered through in-depth interviews with owner-managers on their premises. Convenience sampling is used within the city of Karachi. Firms included relate to production, and services (including retail). It was found that most of the firms are not marketing oriented and they do not understand marketing. Thus they will benefit from some kind of marketing training conducted by the government or through their own resources.

We find ourselves in a period of sustained economic uncertainty. Today, like 6 months ago, the U.S. economy is on the brink of a recession. Weakness in lending activity, coupled with weakness in the housing sector and related manufacturing industries has stymied economic growth since late 2007. At times, recession seems imminent. But, the official measures, such as quarterly gross domestic product, do not clearly signal that the economy is contracting. Further, prices are rising rapidly for food and energy. In today’s increasingly globalised, knowledge-based marketplace, a company’s ability to exploit innovation and technology is fundamental to sustaining growth and staying ahead of the competition. To help local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) move up the value-chain, Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) runs the Operation and Technology Roadmapping (OTR) initiative. Michael Ferrill, who cofounded the programme, spoke on OTR and knowledge transfer at the Fourth International Research Conference on Asian Business held in March 2008 at the Singapore Management University.

Robert Yap, chairman and CEO of YCH Group, was the featured speaker earlier this year in the Singapore Management University’s Wee Kim Wee Centre CEO Talk series. Over a period of 20 years, Yap led his family-owned business from a small transportation company in Singapore to a leading logistics and supply chain solutions provider in Asia Pacific. In recognition of his visionary leadership and industry expertise, Yap won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2007. He spoke to Knowledge@SMU about YCH’s successful evolution and how the future looks for the company.
