A First Course In Entrepreneurship Fundamentals, Part I, Alex Stewart

Management Faculty Research and Publications

This two-part article offers ideas for teaching students who are interested in entrepreneurship but unprepared for the widely-taught business plan course. Their lack of preparation is due less to a lack of business knowledge than it is to an awareness of their life and career needs and of the realities of entrepreneurial careers. Course content ideas are presented to help these students develop competencies in four areas: self-understanding, knowledge of entrepreneurial careers, a realistic sense of what ventures would work for them, and business-relevant creativity.

Enhancing The Entrepreneurial Spirit In Apprenticeship Education To Develop Craft And Micro-Enterprises, Ray English, Katherine Collins

Conference Papers

Micro, small and medium–sized enterprises are considered to be the mainstay of the economy of the European Union, since they represent 99% of all EU enterprises. They are socially and economically important in that they provide 65 million jobs and contribute to innovation and entrepreneurship. However, a 2002 Eurobarometer survey found that EU citizens are less inclined to become entrepreneurs, and tend to be more risk adverse. In recognising this, the EU made entrepreneurship one of the main objectives of the Lisbon Agenda in 2000. The European Commission in 2003 drafted the Green Paper on Entrepreneurship in Europe to stimulate …

Bringing Ideas To Life: Tapping On Design's Strategic Value, Knowledge@Smu May 2010

Bringing Ideas To Life: Tapping On Design's Strategic Value, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Before Apple can wow its legions of devotees and win over new ones with its latest offerings, it needs a group of industrial designers to work their magic first. Highly integral to a product’s success yet often falling below the radar screen as a profession, industrial design involves a unique combination of factors – from studying market trends and human behaviour to conjuring new product categories. But what does it take for organisations to cultivate industrial design as a key competency?

Entrepreneurs Share Their Formula For Success: Failure, Knowledge@Smu May 2010

Entrepreneurs Share Their Formula For Success: Failure, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Entrepreneurship is so often associated with risk-taking that in safety-seeking Singapore, it would be quite natural to assume a rather weak spirit of enterprise. Such an assumption, of course, would only be partly true. After all, successful entrepreneurs need to possess more than just an appetite for risk; they need to be skilled at harvesting talent, tapping on their networks and navigating around business environments. Can such successes be taught? Panellists at a recent forum seem to think so – but only to a limited extent. They draw distinctions between formulaic prescriptions and advice, saying that while there are no …

Successful Technopreneurship 2.0: Beyond Buzzwords And Technology, Knowledge@Smu May 2010

Successful Technopreneurship 2.0: Beyond Buzzwords And Technology, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

If entrepreneurship requires true grit, then technopreneurship – a new-age term that describes entrepreneurship in technology sectors – is quite likely the ultimate test, given the highly dynamic nature of technological innovation and its dependency on a host of external factors. Would the iPhone have succeeded without the App store? Could the Blu-Ray have taken off without the backing of major Hollywood studios? Will people buy GPS systems without maps? Such are considerations that technopreneurs have little influence over, but must always bear in mind because technology, in and of itself, bears little meaning for end-consumers.

Cusemycampus Business Plan, Brian Weinreich

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Many students who arrive at Syracuse wish they knew more of the “inside scoop” in all aspects of the university. With the advent of Web 2.0, the Internet is now mainly dominated by social networking services. The formation and success of companies like Facebook, CollegeHumor, and Twitter show the extent to which students are connected constantly via the Internet throughout the day. One of the key problems with these large websites, such as Facebook and CollegeHumor, is the disconnect between the user and his community. These websites are successful on a large scale, but the niche small scale must be …

Determining The Relationship And Influence Organizational Culture Has On Organizational Trust, Mindy S. Genetzky-Haugen May 2010

Determining The Relationship And Influence Organizational Culture Has On Organizational Trust, Mindy S. Genetzky-Haugen

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The present research examines the influence of organizational culture on organizational trust. Leaders in the present and future will try to create a culture of trust, but leaders who do not examine and understand their current culture will not be successful in changing their organizational culture. The study shows constructive behavioral norms are both predictors and influencers of trust. The results suggest that companies that want to create a culture of trust need to instill into their culture achievement, self-actualizing, humanistic-encouraging and affiliative behavioral norms. Leadership needs to make sure avoidance behaviors are reduced in order to create and instill …

National Venture Competition And Technopreneurship Development In Malaysia, Wee Liang Tan, Karl Egge, Osman Mohamed May 2010

National Venture Competition And Technopreneurship Development In Malaysia, Wee Liang Tan, Karl Egge, Osman Mohamed

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In the global slowdown, there is a revived interest in entrepreneurship development particularly in new startups based on technology. Many countries see this as a basis for future growth and competitiveness. To encourage technology-based entrepreneurship, also called technopreneurship, business plan competitions could be one strategy. Typically one finds business plan competitions either for members of a region of a country (e.g.,SW Pennsylvania); or, as an extension of University programs in business and entrepreneurship (e.g., MIT). Certainly such competitions can generate and exploit interest in entrepreneurship. In Malaysia, beginning in 2001, a business plan competition with a difference has been established. …
