Socio-Economic Sourcing: Benefits Of Small Business Set-Asides In Public Procurement, Timothy G. Hawkins, Michael J. Gravier, Wesley S. Randall

Marketing Department Faculty Journal Articles

Purpose

Small businesses are critical to economic health and encouraged in government spending by set-asides – annual small business sourcing goals that often are not attained. Little research has explored the negative and risky stigmas associated with small business sourcing.

Design/methodology/approach

This research explores reduced transaction costs of small business sourcing to government buyers. A survey of 350 government source selections reveals lower transaction costs derived from lower perceived risk of receiving a bid protest and via more efficient source selection processes.

Findings

Contrary to common bias, the performance level of small businesses is no less than that of large …

Two Essays On The Creation And Success Of New Ventures, Amirmahmood Amini Sedeh Jul 2018

Two Essays On The Creation And Success Of New Ventures, Amirmahmood Amini Sedeh

Management Theses & Dissertations

New venture creation is a complicated, idiosyncratic process that starts with an individual's ambition to exploit an opportunity and involves putting together resources to create value from the opportunity. During this journey, some entrepreneurs can initiate a new venture while others never exploit the discovered opportunity. Additionally, while many new ventures deploy the same resources, some entrepreneurial ventures are successful whereas others barely break even. Although extant literature acknowledges the importance of new venture creation, nonetheless, various drivers of innovative new ventures and factors facilitating the success of such ventures remain understudied.

Given this gap in the literature, the first …

Project Management And The Temporary Relocation Of The Decoupling Point: Hermeneutical Phenomenological Study, Christopher Hicks Jul 2018

Project Management And The Temporary Relocation Of The Decoupling Point: Hermeneutical Phenomenological Study, Christopher Hicks

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study investigates, understands, and describes the value of engaging a project manager to support a customer-driven project that creates a random supply chain demand event. Specifically such an event would require the temporary re-positioning of the decoupling point between the supply push and demand pull within the supply chain. In response to the challenges of this type of event, this study will focus on two specific project manager roles. First, the project manager would act as an extension of a customer-driven project and serve as a conduit for the voice of the customer (VOC) into the supply chain. Secondly, …

A Small Entrepreneurial City In Action: Policy Mobility, Urban Entrepreneurialism, And Politics Of Scale In Jiyuan, China, Shenjing He, Lingyue Li, Yong Zhang, Jun Wang

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This research details the mundane practices of policy mobility and entrepreneurial endeavour in Jiyuan in relation to the city's changing administrative position, and is one of the first attempts at understanding how entrepreneurial policies are mobilized, mutated and diffused in a small inland Chinese city. We interpret Jiyuan's evolving development strategies and trajectory through two interrelated conceptual lenses—policy mobility and urban entrepreneurialism—bridged by an analysis of the politics of scale. Over the past three decades, governance strategies in Jiyuan have evolved from policy imitation, during the germination of urban entrepreneurialism, to policy mutation and diffusion, under the amplification of entrepreneurialism, …

Engaged Participant Observation: An Integrative Approach To Qualitative Field Research For Practitioner-Scholars, Daniel Robey, Wallace T.F Taylor Jun 2018

Engaged Participant Observation: An Integrative Approach To Qualitative Field Research For Practitioner-Scholars, Daniel Robey, Wallace T.F Taylor

Engaged Management ReView

Abstract

Participant observation is an appropriate research method for engaged practitioner-scholars seeking in-depth insights available from qualitative field research. Conventional approaches to participant observation include ethnography and action research. However, conventional approaches were originally developed with the assumption that the roles of practitioner and scholar are separate. We propose a new approach, engaged participant observation, which recognizes the integration of research and practice roles. We illustrate the application of engaged participant observation, and its special demands, through a completed executive doctoral dissertation conducted by second author and supervised by the first author. We address the specific tensions and demands …

Exploring Positive Outcomes Of Decision Making Biases In The Field Of Entrepreneurial Marketing, Pouria Nouri, Narges Imanipour, Kambiz Talebi, Mohammadreza Zali Jun 2018

Exploring Positive Outcomes Of Decision Making Biases In The Field Of Entrepreneurial Marketing, Pouria Nouri, Narges Imanipour, Kambiz Talebi, Mohammadreza Zali

The Qualitative Report

Entrepreneurs make important decisions regarding different aspects of their enterprises. Given the bulk of uncertainty, complexity as well as the rapid rate of change in their business environment, entrepreneurs’ decisions, including their marketing decisions, are prone to decision-making biases. Previous research has mainly focused on the negative outcomes of decision-making biases for entrepreneurs. We argue that sometimes entrepreneurial decision-making biases could have positive outcomes, too. Ignoring these positive outcomes has led to a serious research gap in the field of entrepreneurship. Thus, in this paper, we attempted to explore positive outcomes of decision-making biases in entrepreneurs’ marketing decisions with a …

Regional Public/Private Partnerships As Entrepreneurial Bricolage, John F. Mcardle Jun 2018

Regional Public/Private Partnerships As Entrepreneurial Bricolage, John F. Mcardle

Journal of Comparative Urban Law and Policy

Entrepreneurial development of contaminated or blighted land, commonly referred to as “brownfield,” carries significant enterprise risk. When considering competing opportunities, capital tends to flow in an adverse direction from higher-risk activity where outcomes are less certain. In addition, a complicated regulatory landscape can increase transaction costs which further limit the desirability of these projects. Often, that leaves the remediation of environmentally compromised property in the hands of the public sector. Yet, in industrialized nations with significant brownfield presence, government is often unable to solely cure defects due to limited fiscal resources and competing policy imperatives. One solution to the problem …

Exploring Startup Funding For Small Business Sector Growth, Job Creation And Reduction Of Youth Unemployment In Nigeria, Christian O. Akaeze, Nana A. Akaeze

Bullion

Unemployment generates welfare loss from lowered output, income, and wellbeing which impedes social progress in a nation. Youth unemployment is a major problem currently confronting Nigeria (Nwogwugwu & Irechukwu, 2015). However, in developing economies jobs are created through small businesses. Nevertheless, unemployed youths with small business ideas experience financial constraints and lack access to startup capital. Semi-structured interviews with 15 successful small business owners located in Lagos who …

Reward-Based Crowdfunding Success: Decomposition Of The Project, Product Category, Entrepreneur, And Location Effects, C. S. Richard Chan, Haemin Dennis Park, Pamkaj Patel, David Gomulya

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We assess the relative importance of project, product category, entrepreneur, and location effects on reward-based crowdfunding success. Applying variance decomposition analysis to a sample of 98,336 crowdfunding projects launched between May 2009 and May 2014 on the Kickstarter platform, we find that agency factors, specifically the project and entrepreneur effects, explain the highest relative variance (over 80% of total variance) across three crowdfunding success outcomes – pledge amount, number of backers, and funding success. Structural factors, specifically product category and location effects, have lower but still significant effects. Our study extends prior variance decomposition studies in strategy and entrepreneurship research …
