Bridging The Innovatino Gap At Socom, Gregory J. Ingram
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to provide a case study of how a highly bureaucratic organization located on a relatively inaccessible military base created organizational structures and climates to minimize innovation time and efforts. Typical approaches to government acquisition are not conducive to innovation and inhibit it in many cases. Conducting business with any government element, including the United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM), can be difficult. A few of the physical and regulatory challenges include gaining access to MacDill Air Force Base, entering the SOCOM compound and the prohibition of electronic devices on the compound. Another noteworthy challenge …

Will Vcs Invest At A Distance During And After A Crisis? Evidence From The 2008 Financial Crisis, Samuel Wilson, Christopher Willis, Jing Zhang
College of Business (Strome) Posters
We will explore how large-scale exogenous crises impact venture capital firms’ investment scope decisions during and after a crisis. We will analyze a population of 11,564 funding rounds announced between 2005Q1 until 2012Q4 in the US. Analysis shows that the 2008 Financial Crisis caused a short-term change in the geographical areas where VCs invest, and after the crisis firms tend to look further afield to locate viable investment targets. This study will contribute to entrepreneurial finance research by offering theoretical and empirical insights on how major crises affect venture capital investment and entrepreneurial activities.

Black Women Entrepreneurs: Understanding The Challenges And Proposing Policy For Equitable Change, Nana Younge
Community Engagement Student Work
Black Women Entrepreneurs: Understanding the Challenges and Proposing Policy for Equitable Change examines the obstacles that Black women entrepreneurs face that make building successful businesses challenging. Black women endure systematic oppression that is directly linked to a long history of racial and gender inequality that affects their …

The lifeblood of any business activity is communication. This is magnified in an entrepreneurial setting. Entrepreneurs need a higher command of communication in general and of selling and negotiation in particular. Entrepreneurs need to not only sell products and services but must be able to illustrate the value of their dreams, their ventures, their company culture and more. Great ideas are of little value if you can’t persuade someone else of their worth and get their support.

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
As Singapore transitioned from economy that was primarily dependent on foreign direct investments (FDI) to a knowledge-based economy driven by indigenously developed science, technology and innovations, it became critical for the local firms to grow and internationalize. The government has thus invested heavily (of $19 billion from 2016 to 2020, and $25 billion from 2021 to 2015) in science and technology research and development. The Committee of Future Economy (CFE) concluded that in an era of rapid technological change where innovation cycles have shortened, one of economic strategy is to support our “high growth” enterprises to “scale up”. However, the …

Tips For Sme Transformation Amid Covid-19 Pandemic, Siow-Heng Ong
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The author shared that following the economic downturn in 2020, revival in 2021 can only be very gradual. SMEs in different sectors of the economy face different challenges and have different options for response. Overall, SMEs are hopeful rather than confident. SMEs are generally hoping to manage cash flow and stretch their current funds for immediate business sustainability. Inevitably, their focus is on meeting critical business needs. Turnover and profits are not expected to return to pre-pandemic levels so any increase in hiring or other planning for the future will be slight. He suggested that for pragmatic managers of SMEs …

A Framework For Developing Nascent Entrepreneurs: Entrepreneurship Education’S Kobayashi Maru, Joy H. Carriker, David H. Mayo
International Journal for Business Education
Experiential entrepreneurship education is consistent with resource-based theories of entrepreneurship, which, among other things, regard the impacts of education and experience on entrepreneurial outcomes. Hands-on educational programming is a reification of such theoretical work, combining both of those elements. Such programs often utilize a coaching or mentoring approach, with the expectation that practice under the guidance of a qualified mentor develops the resources and capabilities the entrepreneur may leverage to perform entrepreneurial activities successfully and consistently. Specifically, entrepreneurship literature points to entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) as well as confidence in the business and commitment to entrepreneurship as impactful elements in the …

Despite the growing importance of the private equity (PE) industry in the United States, it is unclear how PE firms create value. This study contributes to the PE literature and strategic management research by examining PE firm resources and competencies that drive the success of equity-backed management buyout deals. Specifically, my work proposes a framework to describe the key value creation drivers and sub-drivers that position PE firms for success in all four stages of the PE value chain: Fund Raising, Deal Sourcing, Governing/Managing, and Exiting. I utilize Porter’s (1985) value chain analysis (VCA) and the resource-based view (RBV) to …
