Isolation Or Interdependence? The Impact Of Central City And Metropolitan Statistical Area Economic Growth On The Welfare In Poor, Inner-City Census Tracts, Amy C. Novak

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This paper critically analyzes the relationship between the central city low income census tract and the economic vitality of the central city and the metropolitan statistical area. It attempts to provide an understanding of the impact of central city and metropolitan statistical area (MSA) economic activity on inner-city, poor census tracts. This study began by examining ninety-six low income census tracts in twenty-four of the fifty largest US cities. The variables examined included income levels, employment, and social variables (educational attainment, female-headed households, type of employment, percent of persons in poverty, percent of persons receiving federal public assistance dollars) in …

Economic Reform And Its Impact On Women In Rural China, Haiping Luo Jan 1997

Economic Reform And Its Impact On Women In Rural China, Haiping Luo

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

China’s rural reform is composed of two parts - changing the old agricultural system and gradually establishing the market mechanism. The agricultural reform is characterized by the adoption of the household responsibility system. The goal of the rural reform is first to achieve effective allocation of labor and land, and second to realize equity and efficiency in rural earnings distribution.

The old agricultural system over-emphasized equality but ignored efficiency. It aimed to keep full employment and a standard wage. This gave rise to an income distribution characterized by the principle “everybody has a share in eating from the same big …

Economics Of Quebec Separatism, J. Scott Attenborough Jan 1997

Economics Of Quebec Separatism, J. Scott Attenborough

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The status of the economies in various regions of Canada is continually a key concern for the nation's political leaders. Historically disparities have existed between regions as the nation developed over time. The fact that the regions have not developed equally has been highlighted by the Premiers of each province bringing their plight before Canada's parliament.

One region that has recently lagged behind the economic development of most other regions is the province of Quebec. Although quite competitive with the overall Canadian economy until 1960, the Quebec economy now lags behind overall national economic performance. Quebec's unemployment rate remains high …

The Feasibility Of Using Hedonic Pricing Models To Predict The Cost To The Air Force Of Aircraft Engines, Richard Albert Hyde Ii Jan 1997

The Feasibility Of Using Hedonic Pricing Models To Predict The Cost To The Air Force Of Aircraft Engines, Richard Albert Hyde Ii

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The objective of this paper is to determine the feasibility of using hedonic pricing models to predict the cost to the Air Force of aircraft engines purchased under government contracts. A hedonic pricing model is constructed using an ordinary least square regression format. The distinguishing factor is that cost is always the dependent variable in a hedonic pricing model. The word hedonic means pertaining to pleasure. Economists relate pleasure to value. Therefore, the predicted coefficients of variables produced by the hedonic model, represent marginal values of each variable. The coefficients also show how the variables impact cost. A good hedonic …

Teacher Pay And Teacher Quality, Dale Ballou, Michael Podgursky

Upjohn Press

Ballou and Podgursky offer solid economic analysis on issues surrounding the debate over whether increasing salaries for teachers leads to a more qualified teaching workforce. The authors find little evidence to support the link between increased salaries and teacher quality, then address two questions: (1) What went wrong? and (2) Which reforms are likely to meet with increased success?

A Community Divided: Coping With A Locally Unwanted Land Use, Robert H. Hamblen Nov 1996

A Community Divided: Coping With A Locally Unwanted Land Use, Robert H. Hamblen

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

Locally Unwanted Land Uses constitute a phenomenon peculiar to twentieth century industrialized countries. LULUs, as they have become known, are a facility or development that is perceived by citizens, communities, regions, or states as undesireable, so much so that effort and resources sufficient to end the threat of the facility being built in a location that will significantly impact those citizens, communities, regions, or states will be expended. This scenario has been replayed time and again in the country and others, in response to uses such as halfway houses, generating plants, and landfills.

The investment needs of the industry are massive. A survey of the. sector shows that there is a large resource gap between its needs …

Is The “Dominant Firm” Dominant? An Empirical Analysis Of At&T’S Market Power, Simran K. Kahai, David L. Kaserman, John W. Mayo Oct 1996

Is The “Dominant Firm” Dominant? An Empirical Analysis Of At&T’S Market Power, Simran K. Kahai, David L. Kaserman, John W. Mayo

Economics & Finance

In this article, we estimate the degree of market power held by AT&T in the interstate long-distance market in the postdivestiture period. Our approach makes use of the dominant firm/competitive fringe model to impose the structure needed both to obtain estimates of the relevant structural parameters and to translate these parameters into an estimate of AT&T's residual demand elasticity and associated Lerner index. Because of the continued presence of regulation and other considerations, however, a direct estimation of the residual demand elasticity is not feasible. Consequently, we take a more indirect approach that combines estimation of the elasticity of fringe …

Money Supply, Inflation And The Nigerian Economy, Paul A. Ogwuma

It is against this background that, this short paper attempts, to identify the relationship between monetary growth and inflationary developments in Nigeria and the implications for economic growth. Export Processing Zone Programmes: Lessons For Nigeria From Other Countries, E. B. Hogan, E. A. Onwioduokit

Economic and Financial Review

The monumental success of the export-oriented South-East Asian countries has engendered a shift in emphasis among other developing countries towards export oriented development strategy in recent times. This paper examines the export processing programmes in Nigeria, drawing from the experiences of other countries where the programme is operational. The analysis confirms that the nature and extent of incentives available in Nigeria's EPZ scheme compares favourably with those provided by similar schemes elsewhere. However, the same cannot be said of infrastructural facilities such as roads, railways and communication. The need for improvement in these facilities is emphasized. Also, security, which is …

Catherine Bonser-Neal. "Does Central Bank Intervention Stabilize Foreign Exchange Rates? Economic Review, Federal Reserve Bank Of Kansas City, Vol. 81, No. 1, First Quarter 1996 (14pp), Peter I. Nwaoba Sep 1996

Catherine Bonser-Neal. "Does Central Bank Intervention Stabilize Foreign Exchange Rates? Economic Review, Federal Reserve Bank Of Kansas City, Vol. 81, No. 1, First Quarter 1996 (14pp), Peter I. Nwaoba

Economic and Financial Review

The paper tried to establish whether central bank intervention could reduce exchange rate volatility by stopping speculative attacks against a currency. The author's concern centered on the fact that exchange rate volatility has increased since the adoption of flexible exchange rate system in 1973 and the subsequent interventions by most central banks. She observed that many European countries have intervened in foreign exchange markets when deemed necessary to reduce volatility and possibly keep exchange rates within a band around a target rate. But opinions still differ on whether these interventions could stabilize exchange rates. The paper, therefore, sought to present …
