A Process Improvement Study On A Military System Of Clinics To Manage Patient Demand And Resource Utilization Using Discrete-Event Simulation, Sensitivity Analysis, And Cost-Benefit Analysis, Michael Q. Corpuz Mar 2015

A Process Improvement Study On A Military System Of Clinics To Manage Patient Demand And Resource Utilization Using Discrete-Event Simulation, Sensitivity Analysis, And Cost-Benefit Analysis, Michael Q. Corpuz

Theses and Dissertations

Inefficiencies in the healthcare system are a growing concern. Long wait-times are a concern at military clinics because it takes servicemembers away from performing their duties. Managing wait-times are particularly challenging due to frequent relocations of servicemembers and variable patient demands that are less likely to be experienced by civilian clinics. Military clinics must be capable to meet increasing demand when servicemembers require a Deployment Health Assessment; it also needs to be capable of handling an instantaneous surge of walk-ins when a medical incident occurs in the local area. It must be able to meet these demands in a fiscally …

Adolescent Leadership Development: Redirecting Self Assessment To Enhance Leadership Development In Youth Organizations, Franklin T. Kudo Mar 2015

Adolescent Leadership Development: Redirecting Self Assessment To Enhance Leadership Development In Youth Organizations, Franklin T. Kudo

Student Scholarship

Adolescence is a very significant period in a young persons' life. It is a time when youth are growing and establishing individual identities. It is also a critical time for learning essential life skills. However, we often don't recognize the importance of teaching leadership to our children. We simply rely on someone else to teach these skills. Parents become preoccupied and concerned about how their children are doing in school or in a sports program, and developing leadership skills fades from our list of "things to do" for our children. Parents make the erroneous assumption that the educational system will …

The Foul, Or What's Up (Wassup) On The Court?: A Study Of African-American Male Social Interactions On The Outdoor Basketball Court, Craig E. Soaries Mar 2015

The Foul, Or What's Up (Wassup) On The Court?: A Study Of African-American Male Social Interactions On The Outdoor Basketball Court, Craig E. Soaries

Student Scholarship

There is a vicious cycle of drug addiction and displacement for many undereducated, and low skilled African-American men, that leads to a life of frustration, defeat and despair. These groups of African-American males for various reasons, culturally as well as sociologically, have not participated in what is considered mainstream American society but rather have created a social order of their own. Evidences of this alternative order are demonstrated in street gangs, prison life and other socially unacceptable lifestyles. An alternative order is genuine, unrecognized and coexists with the dominant American social order. This study examines offensive, foul, behavior on a …

Clash And Rapprochement Of Practice And Science In Executive Education: A Social Structure To Collaborate, Olivier L. Bouclier Mar 2015

Clash And Rapprochement Of Practice And Science In Executive Education: A Social Structure To Collaborate, Olivier L. Bouclier

Student Scholarship

Corporate funding for executive education (EE) programs perceived as too academic and not sufficiently relevant has waned in recent years. Previous investigations conducted at the macro level point to a disconnect between science and practice in business schools\, but no micro level studies have explored how faculty and managers of EE programs experience and cope with conflicting orientations that might influence the design and delivery of EE programs. Irrespective of EE program ranking\, our findings reveal enduring tensions resulting from structural and social differences between the two. Both EE faculty and EE managers feel constrained by these tensions and exercise …

Kristina recently inherited the business of her late father. In his 18 years of business experience at this location he was never able to grow the business past the subsistence stage. How she will eventually fare is dependent on the same factors faced by her late father. They include her ability to overcome the opposition of local residents, raise capital to build a larger stand and move the current location of her newspaper stand. Since her father was unable to do this in more than 18 years of business in this location, the odds do not seem promising. And yet, …

A Humanitarian Logistics Framework For The Philippines: The Case Of Typhoon Haiyan, Kirshna Loquinte, Isabella Militante, Fatima Rakim, Brian Gozun Mar 2015

A Humanitarian Logistics Framework For The Philippines: The Case Of Typhoon Haiyan, Kirshna Loquinte, Isabella Militante, Fatima Rakim, Brian Gozun

Center for Business Research and Development

Logistics being used for humanitarian operations is known as humanitarian logistics. It is defined by Thomas (2003) as the process of planning, implementing and controlling the efficient, cost-effective flow and storage of goods and materials, as well as related information, from the point of origin to the point of consumption for the purpose of alleviating the suffering of vulnerable people. Logistics in the humanitarian aspect is vital; it plays a critical role during disaster relief operations. It bridges the gaps between the different stages of the operations. It is also crucial because the success and the time duration of the …

Assessing The Emphasis On Information Security In The Systems Analysis And Design Course, William David Salisbury, Thomas W. Ferratt, Donald E. Wynn Mar 2015

Assessing The Emphasis On Information Security In The Systems Analysis And Design Course, William David Salisbury, Thomas W. Ferratt, Donald E. Wynn

MIS/OM/DS Faculty Publications

Due to several recent highly publicized information breaches, information security has gained a higher profile. Hence, it is reasonable to expect that information security would receive an equally significant emphasis in the education of future systems professionals. A variety of security standards that various entities (e.g., NIST, COSO, ISACA-COBIT, ISO) have put forth emphasize the importance of information security from the very beginning of the system development lifecycle (SDLC) to avoid significant redesign in later phases. To determine the emphasis on security in typical systems analysis and design (SA&D) courses, we examine (1) to what extent security is emphasized in …

The Correlation Between Commerce And Management, Rochelle Dean Mar 2015

The Correlation Between Commerce And Management, Rochelle Dean

Other Graduate Scholarship

This paper proposes to explore the correlation between Commerce and Management as I give a better insight on the role of Management and the effects it has globally. Commerce should be properly managed as a commercial activity that enhances the standard of living within a nation that will increase its standing in the world. When commerce is allowed to run unregulated as it has, large businesses and major conglomerates can become immune to failure making them too powerful which levies negative externalities on citizens as well as globally to the benefit of business owners. Broadly speaking, nations should be concerned …

Assisted Living: Trends In Cost And Staffing, Amy Kisling, David P. Paul, Alberto Coustasse Mar 2015

Assisted Living: Trends In Cost And Staffing, Amy Kisling, David P. Paul, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

Assisted living communities (ALFs), which provide a community for residents who require assistance throughout their day, is an important part of the long-term care system in the US. Trained individuals assist residents with activities known as Activities of Daily Living (ADL). The costs of ALFs are paid either out of pocket, by Medicaid or by Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI). Medicare does not pay for ALFs. Monthly costs of ALFs have increased over the past five years on an average of 4.1%. The major reason for this cost increase is probably the increased healthcare needs of the baby boomers generation, but …

Assessment Under Resource Constraints, Steve Lovett, Mary Curtis Mar 2015

Assessment Under Resource Constraints, Steve Lovett, Mary Curtis

Management Faculty Publications

Assessment and the measurement of learning are receiving increasing emphasis in American higher education. This is a case study that demonstrates a simple, inexpensive method of measuring freshman to senior “gains” or learning using a cross-sectional methodology. Seniors and freshmen within a four-year business program were both given the same multi-part test. Not surprisingly, the seniors’ average score on all parts was higher than that of the freshmen. However, the seniors were older than the freshmen, indicating a possible maturity effect, and had higher average scores on their entrance examinations, indicating a possible selection effect. We used regression techniques to …

How Organizational Identity Influences Information Technology (It) Success, Stephan P. Miller Mar 2015

How Organizational Identity Influences Information Technology (It) Success, Stephan P. Miller

Student Scholarship

Corporate Information Technology (IT) functions are under increasing pressure to succeed in their IT outsourcing (ITO) arrangements. Studies of ITO success have in the past mainly explored its operational and financial aspects. At the same time there is a dearth of research on broader organizational antecedents and outcomes of ITO. This study examines the effect of organizational identity on outsourcing success. Specifically, we ask: does the strength of an organization’s identity- i.e. how unique it views its role in relation to other corporate functions- influence ITO success? We conduct an empirical study among 312 IT leaders engaged in outsourcing. We …

An Analytical Representation Of Flexible Resource Allocation In Hospitals, Michael Thorwarth, Wael Rashwan, Amr Arisha Feb 2015

An Analytical Representation Of Flexible Resource Allocation In Hospitals, Michael Thorwarth, Wael Rashwan, Amr Arisha

Articles

Non-linear processes within complex systems are difficult to predict. Using discrete event simulation (DES) models can be helpful for presenting the uncertainty level embedded within these processes. However, the interpretations of the resulting outcomes can be challenging to analyze. This is evident when experimenting with simulation models, and therefore requires the adaptation of existing models. Introducing cyclic entities such as interconnected resources to the simulation model adds a new level of complexity to the model. In practical cases, decision makers often demand a model that enables them to make quick decisions with less complexity involved. However, these individuals still want …

Management Challenges In Nurturing A Safe Work Environment, Thomas W. Camm Feb 2015

Management Challenges In Nurturing A Safe Work Environment, Thomas W. Camm

Mining Engineering

As engineers, we are trained to use logical, rational problem solving to insure our mines operate at maximum efficiency. We tend to use the same technical approach to design safety into all mining systems. This works well for machines, but not so much for the human component. Recent insights in the field of behavioral economics provide useful ideas for addressing the fact that we are driven by emotions more often than by rational thought. Understanding the nonrational aspect of human behavior is an important piece of any safety system design.

A Simulation-Based Approach To Solve A Specific Type Of Chance Constrained Optimization, Lijian Chan Feb 2015

A Simulation-Based Approach To Solve A Specific Type Of Chance Constrained Optimization, Lijian Chan

MIS/OM/DS Faculty Publications

We solve the chance constrained optimization with convex feasible set through approximating the chance constraint by another convex smooth function. The approximation is based on the numerical properties of the Bernstein polynomial that is capable of effectively controlling the approximation error for both function value and gradient. Thus, we adopt a first-order algorithm to reach a satisfactory solution which is expected to be optimal. When the explicit expression of joint distribution is not available, we then use Monte Carlo approach to numerically evaluate the chance constraint to obtain an optimal solution by probability. Numerical results for known problem instances are …

Student Scholarship

The current study attempts to confirm and measure the impact of nonprofit commitment\, nonprofit collaboration and community participation on community development and education reform. We found commitment represent the social values that urges nonprofits to be involved in community development and education reform to local communities. We also found collaboration is the skills that enables nonprofits to respond their engagement and address the needs of local communities. Both commitment and collaboration are based on the shared vision and public good engagement. The study found that 1) shared vision makes nonprofits aware of their duty to be committed to local communities; …
