In Search Of Work-Life Balance: Organizational And Economic Challenges Confronting Women In Banking And Management Consulting Firms In Southwest Nigeria, Oluwafisayo Ogundoro
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Married women in the banking and management consulting firms in Nigeria encounter challenges that affect their commitment to their families while working long hours in demanding jobs. This study explores the challenges married women encounter and the impacts they have on women’s family lives, social lives, and health. I analyze primary and secondary sources to understand how organizational work culture such as long working hours, work competitiveness, and Nigeria’s unstable economy negatively affect the work-life balance of married women in banking and management consulting firms. Although participants shared the belief that their workplaces practiced “equality,” their descriptions of daily life …
Feasibility Of Collaborative Alliance Association For Non-Competitive Small Business Contractors, Brody Allen Gill
Feasibility Of Collaborative Alliance Association For Non-Competitive Small Business Contractors, Brody Allen Gill
Construction Management
Small business construction contracting firms around the country struggle with growing their business successfully. This is a result of unknown results from new business practices and few resources to initiate programs that can improve productivity and efficiency. A simple solution could give small business construction contractors the opportunity to share ideas, compare company analytics and promote professional networking in a non-competitive, collaborative alliance. The goal of this project is to determine if a collaborative alliance association using data benchmarking would be an effective solution for non-competitive small business contractors to grow their businesses. Thereafter being proven effective, is such an …
The Economic Impact Of Anti-Corruption Legislation On Foreign Investor Perceptions Of Corruption, Jean-Marie Marthe Auguste Richard Marcel Van Der Elst
The Economic Impact Of Anti-Corruption Legislation On Foreign Investor Perceptions Of Corruption, Jean-Marie Marthe Auguste Richard Marcel Van Der Elst
Theses and Dissertations
Corruption has increasingly become an international challenge and the coordination of Anti-Corruption Legislation (ACL) and its implementation, a priority for nations. The economic impact of corruption on economic growth, foreign direct investment flows, and international trade is indicated in international research studies. The significant increase in global financial and trade transactions has presented new and increased opportunities for rent-seeking and increased the need for coordinated action against all forms of corruption. The effectiveness of national ACL measures in combatting and reducing corruption in all its forms, remains poorly defined and the extant research inconclusive. This study explores the economic impact …

Exploring Configuration Management In Department Of Defense (Dod) Projects, Manessa Threatt
Theses and Dissertations
Configuration management has become more important than ever to managers of DoD projects. The study evaluated the relevancy of the facilitating and obstructing factors to the success of the overall configuration management process in DoD projects. It also examined the correlation between years of experience and academic qualification as well as configuration management professionals supporting DoD projects and the criticality of each factor. Hypothesis testing indicated that all facilitating and obstructing factors are relevant to the success of the overall configuration management process in DoD projects. Hypothesis testing indicated four significant positive correlations with years of experience as configuration management …
Leadership On Fire: Mindfully Shared, Stephanie D. Gapud
Leadership On Fire: Mindfully Shared, Stephanie D. Gapud
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
A typical wildland firefighting organization is structured hierarchically, much like the military. Thus, it follows that one would expect to see strong evidence of command and control (i.e., directive and transactional) when studying leadership behaviors in this kind of organization. However, a successful, yet paradoxical type of leadership was found at the Alabama Forestry Commission. In this study, we argue that the managerial mindset that drives excellence in team performance is driven by sharing (delegating) responsibility to those who have the knowledge, skills, and abilities; thereby allowing the authority to migrate down the chain of command. Adopting “Mindful Leadership” that …

Urban Consolidation Center Or Peer-To-Peer Platform? The Solution To Urban Last-Mile Delivery, Qiyuan Deng, Xin Fang, Yun Fong Lim
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Booming e-commerce activities further increase this demand, exerting intense pressure on the cities' well-being. To build a city with congestion and pollution under control, a consolidator can operate an urban consolidation center (UCC) to bundle shipments from multiple carriers before the last-mile delivery. Alternatively, the consolidator can operate a peer-to-peer platform for the carriers to share their delivery capacity. Our objective is to compare the performance of these two business models. Under each business model, we study the interactions between a consolidator and multiple carriers using a two-period game-theoretical model. In each period, the consolidator first chooses a delivery fee …
Getting Serious About Games: A Study Of Work And Play Through Information Systems, Jeffrey K. Mullins
Getting Serious About Games: A Study Of Work And Play Through Information Systems, Jeffrey K. Mullins
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Play and games shape, and are shaped by, culture. They represent an integral and ubiquitous component of humanity. Technological advances are blurring the lines between work and play, and their increasing convergence requires deeper understanding. Organizations seek to harness the motivational power of games to improve instrumental outcomes but face numerous challenges in doing so. Extant theory struggles to inform practice on the use of gameful experiences to achieve practical goals. This dissertation presents three essays that explore the domain of gameful information systems (IS), defined as IS that are designed or perceived to afford or support user experiences similar …

Critically Appraised Topic (Cat): Building A Library Of Validated Practices., Jahan Moghadam, Samuel W. Yates, Richard L. Baskerville
Engaged Management ReView
Abstract
We review the critically appraised topic (CAT) as an evidence-based tool in management research and provide original examples for consideration. The CAT is a highly condensed form of systematic literature review, collecting study findings to address a specific practice-oriented research question. Such questions often investigate the effectiveness of a known intervention. In addition, a CAT critiques the best evidence available by considering the rigor and validity of relevant published research. CATs consolidate investigations of research relevant to specific, practical treatments in the field. We include two different CAT examples from unique business settings to illustrate the fundamental elements and …

Task-Based Estimation And Planning For Application Development Projects And Resources: Models, Methods And Applications, Chidambaram Subbiah
Dissertations
This dissertation takes a new approach to software development effort estimation from the perspective of design patterns at an organization. A new estimating tool is developed to provide bottom up estimates based on the design patterns of the organization. The research also offers guidelines for extracting the unique design patterns specific to an organization that are used to obtain baseline task level estimates in the Estimating Tool. In addition, the tool provides a suite of seven estimates using predictive analytics to estimate the labor hours required for a project using historical data, a bottom-up estimate that is rooted in the …
Design As Entrepreneurship: Towards A Design-Specific Entrepreneurship Framework, Con Kennedy
Design As Entrepreneurship: Towards A Design-Specific Entrepreneurship Framework, Con Kennedy
Conference papers
Current thinking on entrepreneurship states there is no specific link between the entrepreneur and their enterprise. Design is an individual creative act; therefore, the practitioner is not separate from their idiosyncratic process. The Designer is the product offering. Designers form Design Enterprises, meaning that with this aspect of inseparability, the Design Entrepreneur is a different kind of entrepreneur than currently discussed. The literature on the topic discusses design as a creative output, not as entrepreneurship output. Like any enterprise, Design Enterprises must be profitable. There are many entrepreneurship processes, none of which seem to address the needs of the Design …

Post-Implementation Analysis Of The Impact Of Intravenous Automation Systems On Health-System Pharmacy Operations, Craig Kimble, Ken Maxik, Chris Booth, Michael Rudolph, Kim Broedel-Zaugg
Faculty Research Day
We have all seen the reports on the news about issues related to IV rooms and IV room compounding. Many health-system pharmacies have implemented, or are considering some form of intravenous (IV) automation and/ or compounding system in their clean rooms to reduce pharmacy errors and improve accuracy, productivity, and workflow. Manufacturers tout that automated systems, used appropriately, aid in reducing errors from reaching patients. Additionally, IV admixture automation is one of the most recent areas where technology has been added to pharmacy workflow.

Introducing A Mobile Health Care Platform In An Underserved Rural Population: Reducing Assimilations Gaps On Adoption And Use Via Nudges, Joseph Hodges
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Rural communities are often overlooked when it comes to offering cutting edge consumer healthcare technologies. Mobile applications usually exclude populations in rural demographics due to the infrastructure requirements and available technology in the region. The population studied is a low income rural health plan in southwest Georgia. They are uniquely considered as they have the highest healthcare costs in the U.S. and are compared to healthcare costs among higher income populations like Vail, Colorado. Innovations, such as mobile healthcare applications, have the capacity to offset some of these costs, but even if adoption occurs, this does not guarantee use will …

Understanding Employee Engagement: An Examination Of Millennial Employees And Perceived Human Resource Management Practices, Danielle J. Clark
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Actively disengaged employees cost the United States an estimated $450 billion to $550 billion in lost productivity per year. When employees are engaged, organizations experience less turnover, fewer safety incidents, and increased profitability. An important employee segment is Millennials, who are predicted to comprise as much as 75% of the workforce by 2025.
This three-article dissertation examines employee engagement, focusing on how Millennials experience employee engagement and the impact of perceived human resource management (HRM) practices on employee engagement. The first article is a generational workplace engagement paper focused on Millennials. It introduces a variety of academic and practitioner information …

Playing Darts In The Dark: How Are Chamber Of Commerce Leaders Aligned For Greater Effectiveness?, Robert J. Rohrlack Jr.
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This paper researched what the United States chamber of commerce paid Executives and the volunteer Chairpersons identified as the factors influencing their chamber for effectiveness. There has been little research on chambers of commerce in the U.S. This study adds to the small amount of research available, working to establish baseline information for research to continue this ubiquitous industry. We conducted 24 interviews, 12 paid Executives, and 12 volunteer Chairpersons at chambers of commerce in 11 states. They were asked to identify factors that make their chamber more effective or inhibit their chamber from being effective. The interviews were coded, …
Closeness Centrality: A Social Network Perspective, Dong-Young Kim
Closeness Centrality: A Social Network Perspective, Dong-Young Kim
Journal of International & Interdisciplinary Business Research (2014-2019)
Although the topic of a firm’s network centrality has received significant attention in the literature, little is known about the theoretical concepts behind closeness centrality. This study reviews the definitions of closeness centrality that have been proposed by researchers. This research also provides a proposition about how a firm’s closeness centrality influences its supplier firm’s performance in a supply chain context. Our findings show that extant research has viewed closeness centrality as one of the following dimensions: the distance to other firms, the number of links to other firms, and the level of embeddedness. We found that closeness centrality has …

Legacy Missions In Times Of Change: Defining And Shaping Collections In The 21st Century, Antje Mays, Oya Y. Rieger
Library Presentations
Despite the rapidly changing information and technology landscape, collections remain at the heart of academic libraries, signifying their enduring importance in providing access to our cultural heritage. Given broader trends in research and the current information ecology of an increasingly networked, distributed, and licensed environment, building collections and developing collection polices is increasingly ambiguous. These trends impact librarians in form of ever-expanding portfolios, diffusion of effort, weakened sense of focus, and a rising sense of persistent yet unmet needs for developing new skills. This paper outlines current research on collection trends and summarizes the interactive exchanges from the 2019 Charleston …
Overcoming The Shadow Of Expertise: How Humility And Learning Goal Orientation Help Knowledge Leaders Become More Flexible, Mai P. Trinh
Overcoming The Shadow Of Expertise: How Humility And Learning Goal Orientation Help Knowledge Leaders Become More Flexible, Mai P. Trinh
Management Faculty Publications
Although experts are valuable assets to organizations, they suffer from the curse of knowledge and cognitive entrenchment, which prevents them from being able to adapt to changing situational demands. In this study, I propose that experts’ performance goal orientation resulting from pressures to perform contributes to their flexibility, but this mechanism can be moderated by learning goal orientation and humility. Data from a small sample of healthcare professionals suggested that performance goal orientation partially explained the mechanism of why experts may be inflexible. Humility, both as self-report and other-report measures, was found to be the most consistent moderator of this …

Challenge, Hindrance, And Threat Stressors: A Within- And Between-Persons Examination Of General And Specific Stressor Appraisal Tendencies And A Priori Categorizations, Lisa Brady, Christopher J. L. Cunningham
Industrial and Organizational Psychology Translational Research and Working Papers
Within the occupational stress literature, researchers have often identified stressors as being inherently challenging or hindering, based on previous classifications or on the outcomes usually associated with each. Although the challenge-hindrance model is based on the transactional theory of stress (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984), which emphasizes the importance of an individual’s cognitive appraisal of stimuli, much of the research on this framework has failed to measure an individual’s direct appraisal of stimuli in the environment as challenging, hindering, and threatening, which can be problematic when attempting to understand and predict occupational stress. In the present study we identify and share …

Corporate Social Responsibility And Likelihood Of Financial Distress, Ying Zheng, Yong Wang, Crystal Jiang
Management Department Faculty Journal Articles
Does doing good to society make firms less likely to have financial trouble? This paper looks at the benefit of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and examines whether firms’ CSR engagement affects their chance of falling into financial distress. After analyzing a broad U.S. database spanning 25 years from 1991 to 2015, we find that CSR engagement indeed reduces the likelihood of firms falling into financial distress, and the results are statistically robust and economically significant. Further, we find the impact of CSR on the likelihood of financial distress is more pronounced in economic downturns and for firms with high levels …

Telehealth In Critical Care: Quality And Cost Outcomes, Stephanie Cole, Michael Robie, Bukola Abodunde, Alberto Coustasse
Management Faculty Research
As the population of the United States has continued to age, there has been an increase in usage and Hospital Length of Stay (LOS) costs of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds. In the early 2000s, it was determined there would be a shortage of all ICU providers within the next decade due to the increased need for critical care for the aging generation. Around this time, the Leapfrog Group was formed to demand that hospitals improve quality and decrease cost. Utilization of telehealth in the ICU was a possible alternative, which had a positive impact on both clinical and financial …
