Tree-Based Algorithm For Stable And Efficient Data Clustering, Hasan Aljabbouli, Abdullah Albizri, Antoine Harfouche
Tree-Based Algorithm For Stable And Efficient Data Clustering, Hasan Aljabbouli, Abdullah Albizri, Antoine Harfouche
Department of Information Management and Business Analytics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The K-means algorithm is a well-known and widely used clustering algorithm due to its simplicity and convergence properties. However, one of the drawbacks of the algorithm is its instability. This paper presents improvements to the K-means algorithm using a K-dimensional tree (Kd-tree) data structure. The proposed Kd-tree is utilized as a data structure to enhance the choice of initial centers of the clusters and to reduce the number of the nearest neighbor searches required by the algorithm. The developed framework also includes an efficient center insertion technique leading to an incremental operation that overcomes the instability problem of the K-means …
An Examination Of Optimal Level Of Ceo Narcissism: Why, How, And When Narcissism Impacts Firm Performance, Scott Boswell
An Examination Of Optimal Level Of Ceo Narcissism: Why, How, And When Narcissism Impacts Firm Performance, Scott Boswell
Dissertations
Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) may have narcissistic tendencies that impact the firm and its performance. We explore the definition of narcissism, how it is measured, and when it might be optimal or harmful to the firm’s performance. Leaders exhibiting higher scores on one or more Dark Triad traits often are viewed negatively both inside and outside the firm. Should such negative perceptions disqualify a leader who displays a measure of a Dark Triad trait? This research answers the primary question, is there an optimal level of CEO narcissistic traits and if so, are there moderating factors that impact the level? …

The “Right” Recipes For Security Culture: A Competing Values Model Perspective, Hwee-Joo Kam, Thoma Mattson, Dan J. Kim
Management Faculty Publications
This study argues that the effect of perceived organizational culture on the formation of security-related subjective norms and the level of compliance pressure will vary based on how the employees perceive their organization’s cultural values. These perceptions reflect on the assumptions and principles that organizations use to guide their security-related behaviors. To make these arguments, we adopt the competing values model (CVM), which is a model used to understand the range of organizational values and resulting cultural archetypes.
Gender Stereotypes And Political Leadership: A Study Of Malaysian Secondary Schools, Wan Farihah Ahmad Fahmy
Gender Stereotypes And Political Leadership: A Study Of Malaysian Secondary Schools, Wan Farihah Ahmad Fahmy
Student Works (2020-2029)
Gender inequality continues to be a pervasive problem in both developing and developed nations. While significant progress has been made towards achieving gender equality in many aspects in the recent decades, educational attainment remains an issue in many developing economies. Worldwide, various institutional barriers also continue to prevent women from achieving their fullest political, social, and economic agency. The Malaysian narrative on gender equality in education runs counter to conventional expectations. In the last three decades, girls and women in Malaysia have made significant strides in educational attainment. However, despite this gender gap in schooling favouring females, women continue to …

This chapter offers practical reflection and guiding principles on how to facilitate a holistic experiential learning process for online students with the use of peer coaching, in which two students are paired together to have frequent conversations to help each other understand class work and practice interpersonal skills. Peer coaching is an effective way for students to engage in all learning modes around the Kolb experiential learning cycle and improve their learning experience in online classes. In peer coaching, students learn from the diversity of their peers, better understand and apply class concepts in their own lives, gain specific leadership …
Technology Transfer In Spatial Competition When Licensees Are Asymmetric, Sougata Poddar, Swapnendu Banerjee, Monalisa Ghosh
Technology Transfer In Spatial Competition When Licensees Are Asymmetric, Sougata Poddar, Swapnendu Banerjee, Monalisa Ghosh
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
We study technology transfer in a spatial competition with two asymmetric licensees (firms) with an outside innovator who decides how many licenses to offer and the optimal licensing contract. We show the optimal licensing policy is pure royalty contract to both licensees leading to a complete diffusion of the new technology. The result holds irrespective of the cost differentials between the licensees and for innovation of all sizes, that is, drastic or non‐drastic. This robust finding although supports the dominance of royalty licensing in practice; however, consumers may not be necessarily better off. We also throw light on the situation …

Be Like Me: The Effects Of Manager-Supervisor Alignment, Johanna Anzengruber, Sabine Bergner, Herbert Nold, Daniel Bumblauskas
Faculty Work
Purpose: This study examines whether managerial capability fit between line-managers, middle-managers, and top-level managers enhances effectiveness.
Design/methodology/approach: Effectiveness data and managerial capability ratings from more than 1,600 manager-supervisor dyads were collected in the United States and Germany. Polynomial regression was used to study the relation between manager-supervisor fit and managerial effectiveness.
Findings: Our results indicate that the fit of managerial capabilities between a manager and his/her supervisor predicts the effectiveness of this manager. The most effective managers show particularly high managerial capabilities that are in line with predominantly high managerial capabilities of their supervisors. Two aspects are …

The authors posit that workplace bullying is positively related to intentions to leave, and that this effect is transmitted through lower justice perceptions.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors surveyed 146 healthcare workers, using factor analysis and the Preacher and Hayes (2008) PROCESS macro to test their hypotheses.
Findings
The study results indicate that workplace bullying is positively associated with intentions to leave. This effect is transmitted through lower entity-based distributive justice perceptions.
Research limitations/implications
The study sample was cross-sectional and collected …

Perceptions Of International Students In Indian Higher Education Campuses, Sanjay Krishnapratap Pawar, Swati Vispute, Hassan Wasswa
The Qualitative Report
The global competition for international students has fuelled the need for education providers to become more consumer oriented in their planning. Our purpose with this study was to understand international student perceptions and discuss corresponding approaches. In this qualitative study we interviewed twenty international students enrolled in two Indian universities to examine: one, their feelings about being an international student in India and two, what attracted them to India as a higher education destination. Our findings suggest that, the people on campus and in the host city are vital to delivering experiences. We identified “quality of education,” “cultural diversity” and …

Knowledge Based View Of University Tech Transfer—A Systematic Literature Review And Meta-Analysis, Clovia Hamilton, Philbin P. Simon
Knowledge Based View Of University Tech Transfer—A Systematic Literature Review And Meta-Analysis, Clovia Hamilton, Philbin P. Simon
Technology & Society Faculty Publications
Research and technology commercialization at research-intensive universities has helped to develop provincial economies resulting in university startups, the growth of other new companies and associated employment. University technology transfer offices (TTOs) oversee the process of technology transfer into the commercial marketplace and these organizational units can be considered in the context of enabling effective knowledge management. However, what enables productive TTO performance has not been comprehensively researched. Therefore, this research study adopted the knowledge-based view as the theoretical construct to support a comprehensive investigation into this area. This was achieved through employing a systematic literature review (SLR) combined with a …
