When The Weak Are Mighty: A Two‐Sided Matching Approach To Alliance Performance, Darcy Fudge Kamal, Florence Honoré, Cristina Nistor
When The Weak Are Mighty: A Two‐Sided Matching Approach To Alliance Performance, Darcy Fudge Kamal, Florence Honoré, Cristina Nistor
Business Faculty Articles and Research
Research Summary
Network centrality is an important determinant of alliance performance. However, estimating how each alliance member's centrality affects alliance performance is challenging because the end market might value each partner's contribution differently. We solve this empirical question with a two‐sided matching model that accounts for the partners' endogenous selection and estimates the effect of each side's centrality and input quality on performance. We implement the method in the novel context of the Thoroughbred horse industry, in foal‐sharing alliances between buyers and suppliers. We find that buyer centrality has a larger marginal effect on the alliance performance than the supplier …

Ceo Gender-Based Termination Concerns: Evidence From Initial Severance Agreements, Felice B. Klein, Pierre Chaigneau, Cynthia E. Devers
Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
We theorize that female candidates considering CEO roles will perceive greater termination vulnerability in such roles than their male counterparts. We further theorize that indicators of recent organizational distress will exacerbate female CEO candidates’ perceptions of termination vulnerability, while the presence of female leaders will mitigate these concerns. To test our arguments, we examine the initial values of newly appointed female and male CEOs’ severance agreements from 2007 to 2014. Results support our arguments and begin to shed light on the factors that influence female executives’ concerns about CEO roles and ultimately firms’ ability to appoint female CEOs.
Digital Exploration Alliances, Anurag Vij
Digital Exploration Alliances, Anurag Vij
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Digital disruption has impacted every industry and the spending on digital transformation technologies and services worldwide is estimated to reach USD 2.3 trillion by 2023 (Statista, 2021). Reflecting the increasing importance of digital transformation, many firms are entering into strategic alliances that feature traditional industry leaders and digital technology leaders. Little research, however, examines these digital exploration alliances in a systematic way. Accordingly, this dissertation synthesizes extant literature with a theories-in-use approach to conduct depth interviews with 26 managers, with a collective 797 years of experience, to offer a parsimonious definition of digital exploration alliances (DEA) and outlines the similarities …

Digital Strategies For Reshaping The Competitiveness Of Hopsca, Wafong Hoi
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The digital transformation strategy has a profound impact on the commercial real estate industry in China. However, so far, research on digital innovation strategies in the business field predominantly surrounds the retailing and systematic research identifying the effect of digital strategies on HOPSCA and commercial operational service provider has yet to be conducted. On the issue of digital transformation strategies of HOPSCA, there is currently a lack of relevant empirical evidence in the fields of management and economics to quantitatively analyze its effects, and there is not readily available and reliable experience for reference in the business practices.

Swot Analysis Applications: An Integrative Literature Review, Mostafa Ali Benzaghta, Abdulaziz Elwalda, Mousa Mohamed Mousa, Ismail Erkan, Mushfiqur Rahman
Journal of Global Business Insights
A strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis has become a key tool used by businesses for strategic planning. Scholars have conducted SWOT research for over six decades. However, a collective understanding of SWOT analysis remains vague. This study accessed, analyzed, and synthesized the SWOT literature, allowing for new theoretical perspectives and frameworks to emerge. Using an integrative literature review, this study reviewed SWOT studies historically, providing a greater understanding of the SWOT analysis in different sectors and the different approaches used in SWOT studies. Furthermore, it fills the knowledge gap in the strategic planning context and indicates meaningful implications …

Corporate Parenting Advantage: Conceptual, Methodological, And Empirical Considerations, Pairoj Piyawongwathana, Sak Onkvisit
Journal of Global Business Insights
The pioneering work of Campbell et al. (1995a) presented four ways a corporate parent either creates or destroys value for the companies it owns. They are (a) stand alone, (b) linkage, (c) central functions and services, and (d) corporate development. Despite widespread acceptance of the concept of parenting advantage, empirical research remains scarce. Examining the methodological issues, this research describes the development of an instrument to measure the four strategies. An exploratory factor analysis yielded six distinct factors, accounting for 74.11% of the variance. The results partially validated the a priori classification scheme. A few factors partly reflected the measurement …

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Leadership is hard to define but easy to recognize and is found in every facet of life. Leaders themselves range from good to bad, the extremities of which are determined by their character, actions, perception of self, how they are perceived by others and their worldviews. An individual’s values provide the basis for ethical decisions, which makes self-awareness a critical element in the development of one’s leader identity. This article provides an overview of leader identity development and offers ways for leaders to apply ethics in their everyday lives.

The Effects Of Social Spending On Entrepreneurship In Developed Nations, Shelby Solomon, Joshua S. Bendickson, Eric W. Liguori
Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research
Understanding how national policy can spur entrepreneurial activity is central to entrepreneurship research. Over the past decade, there has been a limited set of research findings to suggest that social spending may increase entrepreneurship in addition to serving more direct social purposes. We examine the topic through the lens of market failure theory and Austrian economics. In accordance with the Austrian perspective, we theorize that social spending increases the opportunity cost of entrepreneurship, thereby decreasing the attractiveness of entrepreneurship in comparison to salaried employment. Drawing from a sample of 31 developed countries spanning 2004–2011, we investigate the effects of social …

Too Unsafe To Monitor? How Board-Ceo Cognitive Conflict And Chair Leadership Shape Outside Director Monitoring, Dennis B. Veltrop, Pieter-Jan Bezemer, Gavin Nicholson, Amedeo Pugliese
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Research into boards of directors has provided mixed support for the view that outside directors' independence or leadership by an independent chair improves monitoring. In this study, we use a micro-level approach to provide a better understanding of why outside directors have difficulty in monitoring the CEO. We highlight that an important reason for this lies in the boardroom dynamics associated with (a) outside directors' cognitive conflict with the CEO and (b) the chair's leadership of the board. Our inductive analyses of video observations of board meetings in five Australian corporations revealed the importance of chair participative leadership during disagreement …

The hospital chargemaster has been the heart of the healthcare revenue cycle, as it has served as the hospitals’ starting point for billing patients and payers. The CDM was made as an extensive breakdown of the cost of the care provided and in order for a hospital to correctly bill a patient for care received as every chargeable item in the hospital must be included in the master. The methodology for this study utilized a literature review. It consisted of academic sources, electronic databases, academic journals, and government websites. Thirty-eight sources were referenced for this literature review. The literature review …

Nepotism Concept Evaluation: A Systematic Review And Bibliometric Analysis, Neelam Kaushal, Suman Ghalawat, Rahul Pratap Singh Kaurav
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
An interdisciplinary approach to the study of nepotism is taken into consideration in this article. Nepotism is one of the least researched and most poorly defined human resource approaches, and it has an enormous effect on companies that hire staff. Different terms, such as Nepotism, Cronyism, and favoritism, have an adverse influence on the company's efficiency and lead to poor performance. From an interdisciplinary viewpoint, organizations often look at nepotism to better represent such policies and practices on companies. The research work identifies significant contributors, recent trends, contexts, and supports in the study field for any further direction. A sample …
