Product Complexity And Strategic Alliance On Drug Approval, Taoyong Su, Wanrong Hou, Edward Levitas, Sibin Wu May 2021

Product Complexity And Strategic Alliance On Drug Approval, Taoyong Su, Wanrong Hou, Edward Levitas, Sibin Wu

Management Faculty Publications

Management of the business-government relationship is critical for firm performance in regulated industries. In this paper, we predict a U-shaped relationship between product complexity and the time to approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Moreover, we argue that this association is contingent on the types of strategic alliances (i.e., R&D alliance, Marketing alliance) of the focal firm in that those alliances help FDA and pharmaceutical companies achieve harmony. Using the approved drugs by FDA from 1999 to 2016 as the sample, our hypotheses are supported by the empirical analysis on US pharmaceutical firms. The findings have important …

It explains and compares their tax-paying strategies to figure out how they may behave with respect to new rules implemented by the BEPS project in the future. Through case studies from Apple and Starbucks, the …

Agreement Success Plan, Miranda Holtz May 2021

Agreement Success Plan, Miranda Holtz

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Monterey County Health Department’s Administration Bureau works with contracts and agreements for the Public Health Bureau, which detail what services programs will complete so that they can receive funding or maintain a partnership with the County. The problem was that a large portion of the management analyst’s time was dedicated towards technical support for agreements. The Agreement Success Pan is aimed to increase efficiency by aiding program staff with agreements through a Prezi, which is similar to a self-paced webinar. The project had three phases; interviews of program supervisors or managers, gathering supporting documents, and final launch. Afterward, a questionnaire …

How The Level Of Job Complexity Impacts The Gender Wage Gap Across Occupations, Zytlaly Magaña Corona

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The present study focused on unpacking the social and structural aspects of job complexity to better understand its effects on the gender wage gap. Previous research on the job complexity-compensation dynamic has primarily focused on cognitive complexity. Job complexity across occupations were examined using work activity data from O*NET and merging it with the Current Population Survey data sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (N=67,003). Results revealed that higher complexity jobs in this study yielded greater wage disparities across different occupations as predicted. Furthermore, physical activities and gaining knowledge from the Generalized Work Activities were the two most …

A Study Of Penetration Testing Processes And Tools, Sushmitha Reddy Mamilla

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

With cybercrimes on the rise, cybersecurity has become very important today. Every company is eager to avoid cybercrimes like data breaches and hacking. To prepare for such incidents, every company has many protection systems in place. However, the best method to test the strength of these protective measures is penetration testing. Every pen tester must consider many factors like budget, time, and scope of the organization’s penetration testing to choose just the right tool for each phase of the process. This project analyzes the most efficient scanning tool by testing them in a Kali Linux environment.

Flexible Resource Allocation For Service And Production Systems, Peng Wang May 2021

Flexible Resource Allocation For Service And Production Systems, Peng Wang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Resource flexibility hedges against uncertainty in service and production systems. However, flexibility also brings complexity and difficulty in allocating resources. The thesis mainly studies managing flexible resources in two scenarios. The first scenario is a type of coordination of workers in a production or assembly line – bucket brigade. Specifically, the study shows how to manage a stochastic bucket brigade with discrete work stations. The second scenario is a service system with flexible service resources. The study proposes a distributive decision rule for the allocation of resources under both supply and demand uncertainty.

Chapter 2 studies a J-station, I-worker bucket …

Essays On Management Of Scarce Resources, Qian Luo

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Efficient management of scarce resources is critical to the improvement of economic, social and/or environmental performances. In this dissertation, I focus on the management of two scarce resources: i) healthcare resources and ii) water, and investigate two important problems: i) the estimation of patients’ health transition to support healthcare resources control under the context of sequential medical treatments, and ii) the urban water system control with a specific focus on the wastewater recycling capacity investment in the presence of climate change and urban water scarcity. The first chapter studies how to estimate patients’ health transition considering the effects of treatment-effect-based …

Ceo Curiosity And Firm Innovation, Hui Yu May 2021

Ceo Curiosity And Firm Innovation, Hui Yu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

As an important personality trait, CEO curiosity is emphasized in practice but obtains little attention in theory. This dissertation aims to investigate the impact of CEO curiosity on firm innovation and the mediating role of external search. I argue that both diversive and specific curiosity of CEOs are positively correlated to firm innovation based on upper echelons theory (UET). Furthermore, search breadth mediates the positive connection between CEO diversive curiosity and firm innovation, while search depth mediates the positive connection between CEO specific curiosity and firm innovation. Besides, I explore the moderating effects of firm performance and market competition on …

Resilience As An Organisational Capability: A Study Of How Firms Survive And Outperform In Disruptive Times, Dietmar Kappel

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

An environment, in which volatility and deep uncertainty represent the leading paradigm, pressures firms to focus their attention on adapting to disruptive environmental conditions. Although scholarly attention in the firm-level resilience construct has increased over the years, a number of important issues remain underexplored. To advance progress in the field, research is needed on the dimensions of resilient response formulation and enactment, the dimensions of the disruptive environment and situational factors as well as resilience as a latent outcome variable. Based on an in-depth, systematic review of the received literature, this thesis aims to extend the firm-level resilience literature by …

Examining The Real Costs Of Us Manufacturing Decoupling Strategies, Sze Chiang Jonathan Chee May 2021

Examining The Real Costs Of Us Manufacturing Decoupling Strategies, Sze Chiang Jonathan Chee

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Decoupling strategies have been the main focus of supply chain and resource management studies. Increasingly, due to the shift in geopolitical dynamics, the term ‘decoupling’ is now used in finance, accounting, political, and strategic management fields to describe the effect from the fallout of tense international relations. Existing research on this topic includes modeling strategic retaliation theories and evaluating firm effects from an accounting and finance perspective. Yet, there still is little research published on meso-level analysis of the relationship between macro and micro factors that affect organizational decoupling strategies. This study hopes to add to this new body of …

The Role Of The Top Management Team In Orchestrating Big Data Analytics For Competitive Advantage, Sujatha Rayburn

Theses and Dissertations

In today's big data era, the recognition of big data analytics (BDA) as a competitive differentiator is making companies invest heavily in its potential. However, for most companies, this requires a significant transformation that needs to be led from the top. Thus, the top management team's (TMT) managerial resources will be key to how BDA resources and existing BDA ordinary capabilities are further orchestrated as dynamic capabilities. This study grounded in the Upper Echelons theory, the Dynamic Managerial Capabilities (DMC), and Resource Orchestration frameworks sought to understand the impact of the managerial resources of cognition, human and social capital on …

Barriers To Succession Planning: A Case Study Of Atlanta Nonprofit Organizations, Adonnis J. Jules May 2021

Barriers To Succession Planning: A Case Study Of Atlanta Nonprofit Organizations, Adonnis J. Jules

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Succession planning is not a common practice among nonprofit organizations, despite support for its effectiveness in supporting leadership development and providing organizational stability during a planned or unplanned transition. Nonprofits have acknowledged that their leadership ranks are thin, and a leadership transition tends to bring challenges to the organizations when vacancies need to be filled. Barriers exist that prevent nonprofits from engaging in succession planning, but little research has examined the nature of these barriers. This study focused on nonprofit organizations across four different industry sectors to determine the extent of their succession planning efforts and the barriers that exist …

Three Essays On The Performance Evaluation Of Actively Managed Investment Funds, Qing Yan May 2021

Three Essays On The Performance Evaluation Of Actively Managed Investment Funds, Qing Yan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the performance of hedge funds and actively managed U.S. equity mutual funds.

The first chapter examines the relation between hedge funds and the low beta anomaly. Different conditions in the mutual fund and hedge fund industries should lead to different approaches with respect to the low beta anomaly. I find that, unlike most mutual funds, the average hedge fund tends to benefit considerably from the anomaly. About 2.3% per year of apparent alpha for the average hedge fund can be attributed to the low beta anomaly rather than manager skill. Low skill managers are the most reliant …

Corporate Venture Capital And Its Effects On Company Valuation - An Analysis Of The Additions Of Cvc Arms, Joshua Lyman

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This paper examines the stock price reaction to the addition of corporate venture capital arms to publicly traded companies. Referencing venture capital resources, corporate press release announcements of the addition of CVC arms were hand collected. I calculate the cumulative abnormal returns (CARs) surrounding press release announcement dates and find immediate stock market reactions, positively increasing stock prices compared to the overall market. I further perform placebo event studies at random dates and with direct competitors using the same announcement dates and find no significant results. These findings suggest that corporate venture capital increases company valuation and that financial markets …

Building Relationships As An Expat In China: An Observation On How To Successfully Build And Manage Business Relations In China, Lauren Saunders

Supply Chain Management Undergraduate Honors Theses

Since opening itself to free trade in 1979, China’s economy has doubled in size on average every 8 years. With sustained growth across forty years, China now controls the second-largest economy, just behind the United States by an ever-thinning margin. Seeing opportunity, American businesses moved operations into China immediately. As China’s economy grew, America’s reliance on supply chains across China grew. 2020 U.S. trade value in goods with China surpassed 500 billion USD, with the majority trade value coming from imports to the United States. However, starting in 2018, trade war disputes, geopolitical disruption, and the largest pandemic of the …

The Five Essential Building Blocks To Becoming A Top Twenty-Five Supply Chain Program, Phillip Necessary

Supply Chain Management Undergraduate Honors Theses

The overall intention of this research is to develop aspiring programs to reevaluate their institutions and begin growing their program with lessons from other leading institutions—the more comprehensive, educated, and driven students in the Supply Chain industry, the better.

The Supply Chain Management sector has grown substantially in the last fifteen to twenty years; the current placement rate of undergraduates is eighty-five to one hundred percent after graduation (Damast, 2015). This phenomenon correlates with international and domestic interest in information technology, economic dynamics, flexibility, and product availability, all of which have grown industry demand (Rob O'Byrne, 2020). Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Big-data, analytics, automation, and machine learning are changing the role of managers in supply chain and operations functions. Extant research indicates that effective value creation by analytics is achieved through careful attention to three components: technology, people, and processes. As such, the purpose of my dissertation is to improve the integration of people in current supply chain and operations management systems with ever-changing technologies and processes. I focus on one critical function—demand planning—since it is increasingly influenced by predictive analytics yet can still require human judgment. My dissertation is comprised of three essays as follow.

In Essay 1, I implement …

The Role Of Digital Technology Adoption In Coping With Sc Disruptions Caused By Covid-19 Pandemic, Nicole Record

Thinking Matters Symposium

Supply chain disruptions in addition to the immediate effect of stopping/ impeding the flows, long term effects can include bankruptcies, reduced business growth and increased business uncertainty. Unlike prior disruption events, the COVID-19 pandemic presents a novel opportunity to study a near-simultaneous global supply chain disruption. We carry out a systematic literature review to understand disruption response in this context.

The U.S. Presidential Election Cycle And Stock Market Returns, Georginus Ejiofor Ugwu

Doctoral Dissertations (DBA)

This paper analyzes the relationship between the presidential election year and the stock market returns in the United States by examining the monthly returns of the Standard &Poor’s 500 stock index from January 1959 to December 2019. In essence, I test whether stock market returns improve during presidential election year, consistent with the political business cycle (PBC) and its later offshoot, the ‘presidential election cycle (PEC) hypothesis, which assumes that incumbent presidents and their parties improve economic growth and the stock market outlook by embracing expansionary macroeconomic policy. I employ the Least Squares Regression tests on monthly S&P 500 index …

The Role Of Political Values And Ideologies Of Entrepreneurs And Financiers, Ileana Maldonado-Bautista, Peter G. Klein, Kendall W. Artz Apr 2021

The Role Of Political Values And Ideologies Of Entrepreneurs And Financiers, Ileana Maldonado-Bautista, Peter G. Klein, Kendall W. Artz

Management Faculty Publications

We examine how entrepreneurs’ political values affect their ventures’ stakeholder orientation, and how this orientation affects venture funding. We also show how the political ideologies of financiers influence their investment choices and relationships with entrepreneurs. Using a sample of 652 ventures backed by 332 financiers and information on political values and ideologies of entrepreneurs and financiers, along with text-based analyses of documents to infer stakeholder orientation, we find ventures with a narrow orientation obtain more funding than those with a broader orientation, and this relationship is moderated by financiers’ political ideologies. The findings have implications for stakeholder theory in entrepreneurship.
