Description:

Being a part of the business program here at Duquesne University is more than just an accomplishment; it is the success I have received from high school to where I am today. Going into the junior year of my undergraduate program is where I intend to put all of these successes into place. I can finally dive into what I came to this school for, which was my ultimate major. As a supply chain and information technology double major, I can look into how our country is brought together and what pieces of technology are used to make that …

Store, Handle, And Administer Vaccines Safely To Prevent Errors, Craig Kimble, Kenneth Maxik, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

Insufficient training, multiple manufacturers, and noninterchangeable products increase the risk of vaccine-related errors. Increasing the complexity are the addition of boosters with different doses, personnel new to the vaccine administration process, changes in dosing, easily misidentified labeling or products, vaccines given together, and the interchanging of booster products.2,3 As a result, there is an increased need to be alert in safety efforts with vaccine administration and storage. Pharmacy staff members must work together to improve safety and prevent vaccine-related errors.

Positive Psychological Capital To Help Combat The Mental Health Fallout From The Pandemic And Vuca Environment, Fred Luthans, Julie Dyrdek Broad

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The major purpose of this article is to provide valuable insights and specific guidelines into how the now established “Positive Psychological Capital” or simply PsyCap can help prevent, treat, and sustainably recover from the current mental health global challenges. Specifically, we propose and demonstrate how PsyCap can play a realistic alternative, supplementary, non-stigma role in fighting the dramatically increasing mental illness due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) environment. Moreover, our hope is the evidence based PsyCap perspective and approach presented in this article will have a spillover effect on improving performance and especially well-being …

Think Outside And Inside The Box:The Role Of Dual-Pathway Divergent Thinking In Creative Idea Generation, David Peterson, Marshall Pattie Jan 2022

Think Outside And Inside The Box:The Role Of Dual-Pathway Divergent Thinking In Creative Idea Generation, David Peterson, Marshall Pattie

Department of Business Management - Faculty Scholarship

The Dual Pathway to Creativity Model theorizes that creative performance arises from cognitive flexibility, persistence, or a combination of the two. Existing research has only examined these pathways independently, limiting our understanding of the model and of how people generate ideas. We extend the DPCM model by predicting that creative output arises from the generation of response sets containing both highly related (persistence pathway) and unrelated (flexibility) ideas, an idea generation strategy we call Dual Pathway Divergent Thinking (DPDT). In a study of 147 subjects, we propose a serial mediation model: people higher in Openness to Ideas use DPDT as …

The Effects On Employees From The Switch To Mandatory Contributions In The University Of Arkansas Retirement Plan, Sarah Hope Brasche, Timothy J. Yeager

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

After the 2016 fiscal year, the University of Arkansas Retirement Plan instituted mandatory contributions for full-time employees, presumably to boost retirement savings among those least prepared for retirement. Mandatory contributions began at 1% in fiscal-year 2017 and increased annually to 5% in fiscal-year 2022. This change may have harmed employees with tight budget constraints who wish to contribute less than the minimum contribution rate. At the same time, it may have helped those who were saving less than their optimal amount due to behavioral biases. We surveyed employees at the University of Arkansas campus to assess the effects from the …

Consideration Sets As Resources For Business Model Generation, E. Shaunn Mattingly, Garrett A. Mcbrayer

Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Business models as outcomes for entrepreneurship are increasing in prevalence in pedagogy and practice. Instructors and entrepreneurs are focusing efforts on iterating potential ideas through a process of trial and error in hopes to produce working business models. However, such practices need to be better underpinned by theory so we can develop an understanding of how to identify more valuable opportunity ideas and how to progress them towards working business models with fewer trials and errors. This conceptual paper focuses on integrating extant conceptualisations of business models as interdependent activities with research on identifying opportunities as problem-solution pairings. While integrating …

Improving Data Visualization Skills: A Curriculum Design, Daniel A. Asamoah Jan 2022

Improving Data Visualization Skills: A Curriculum Design, Daniel A. Asamoah

Management Information Systems Faculty Publications

It is unclear whether the data visualization skills possessed by data-centric practitioners reflect recent advances in computing systems and visual design principles, and their role in generating relevant and insightful output to support decision-making. In this study, the author presents a curriculum designed for teaching basic and advanced concepts in data visualization. The author used the survey method to examine whether respondents perceived the pedagogic approach to have enhanced their data visualization competence. The findings indicate preference for a hands- on pedagogic approach to learning data visualization as compared to an entirely theory-based approach. Furthermore, different components of the pedagogic …

Impact Of Knowledge Management Processes Upon Job Satisfaction And Job Performance, George Reid Cooper Jan 2022

Impact Of Knowledge Management Processes Upon Job Satisfaction And Job Performance, George Reid Cooper

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

While we might know anecdotally that the implementation of knowledge management in an organization improves job satisfaction and job performance, there are limited empirical studies that assess this assumption. There have been studies done in this area but the results vary in terms of which knowledge management processes have an impact upon job satisfaction and which do not. Similarly, many studies make assumptions that job satisfaction leads to improved job performance without testing for that variable. The goal of this dissertation is to assess whether the knowledge management processes have a positive impact upon job satisfaction and job performance and …

Improving Performance Feedback Perceptions Through Motivating Language Use, Doreen Hanke, Albi Alikaj, Prity Patel

Research, Publications & Creative Work

This study examines the link between leader motivating language and follower performance feedback perceptions It also explores whether follower/leader gender compositions moderate this relationship. Results show that a follower’s performance feedback perceptions benefit from a leader’s use of motivating language. This relationship is further positively moderated by the presence of certain follower/leader gender matches and mismatches. The results provide support for a stronger use of motivating language in diverse workforces. This characteristic gives motivating language the potential to support diversity in organizations. Implications of the study’s findings and future avenues for research are discussed. Considering the increasing need for more …

The U.S. Plastics Problem: The Road To Circularity, Ruth Jebe Jan 2022

The U.S. Plastics Problem: The Road To Circularity, Ruth Jebe

Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Plastics pollution has been an issue in the United States since discovery of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch catapulted it to the forefront of news reporting. Regulatory and academic activity around plastics has had a common feature: it focused almost exclusively on one stage in plastics’ linear model and framed the problem as a waste problem. Challenges have come in two forms: the shift from the linear production model of take-make-waste to a sustainability paradigm represented by the concept of circular production, and disruption of the global plastics waste supply chain occasioned by changes in China’s waste import policies. These …

The Ethicality And Political Skill Of Leaders And Subordinate Job Satisfaction: A Study Of Accounting Faculty, Donald L. Ariail Jan 2022

The Ethicality And Political Skill Of Leaders And Subordinate Job Satisfaction: A Study Of Accounting Faculty, Donald L. Ariail

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Using a sample of 539 accounting faculty teaching in the United States, this study explored perceptions of the ethicality and political skill of their direct supervisors and self-reported levels of job satisfaction. Ethicality was measured with the Ethical Leadership Scale (ELS) and the Behavioral Integrity (BI) Scale. These measures, which were highly correlated, were proxy measures for accounting faculty perceptions of the tone-at-the-top (TATT)—the ethical leadership under which faculty teach and research. The results indicated that while the majority of accounting faculty perceived their direct supervisor as being ethical, about a third (28% BI, 34.8% ELS) of them did not …

Recent work has identified different experience types, including experience classifications of ordinary, memorable, meaningful, and transformative. This study further clarifies the experience typology through qualitative data analysis of each experience type. Data analysis identified that within each extraordinary experience type, additional subtypes were present. Experience types and subtypes were organized according to the experience typology continuum into a 10-item Experience Impact Scale (EIS), as no instrument to measure experience types or experience impact was available. An expert panel was used to determine the representativeness of the items in the EIS and to provide content-related evidence of validity. Discussion of the …
