The Role Of Politics And Corruption In The Rise Of The African Firm, Wedu Ketema, Howard Jean-Denis
The Role Of Politics And Corruption In The Rise Of The African Firm, Wedu Ketema, Howard Jean-Denis
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Many African businesses lag in financial performance compared to the performance of companies in the West. Despite this, the continent’s economic output has continued to rise considerably in the past two decades, but many of these economic achievements have been discredited. Despite the West’s view of Africa as a continent unprepared for economic growth due to simmering conflict, threats of terror, and other barriers to business, African business has continued to boom. Over the past two decades, Africa has made massive strides to “catch up to the West.” In fact, according to experts, many countries in Africa have experienced what …

Covid Reboot: Making A Case For Cultural Change To Increase Employee Engagement, Martin S. Bressler
Journal of Business & Entrepreneurship
When traveling around the country, you will notice that many small businesses have closed, in many instances due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a recent study by economists at the Federal Reserve, 200,000 U.S. business establishments shut their doors during the first year of the pandemic in addition to the 600,000 businesses per year that permanently closed. Many states have reported that 40% or more small businesses have closed in their state (Congressional Research Service, April 2020).
However, even more disturbing than the number of businesses closing is the difficulty in staffing positions across the country. The hospitality industry …

The Machiavellian Organization: A Multilevel Model To Understand Decision Making In Organizations, Michael J. Matthews, Thomas K. Kelemen, Samuel H. Matthews, Jacob M. Matthews
Management Faculty Publications
We introduce a three-phase model of decision-making as examined through a Machiavellian lens. Distinct from previous research, we broaden our research premise from Machiavellianism exhibited by an individual to Machiavellianism at the organizational level. We examine this type of organization beginning with an emphasis on organizational values and practices, which we define as climate emergence. After establishing the process of climate emergence, we examine employee sensemaking within a Machiavellian climate by drawing on Rest's decision-making model. Our research culminates with an exploration of resultant employee behaviors while emphasizing the moderating role of dispositional Machiavellianism. We conclude with a discussion centered …

Creating A Short, Public-Domain Version Of The Cpai-2: Using An Algorithmic Approach To Develop Public-Domain Measures Of Indigenous Personality Traits, Mukhunth Raghavan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this study we aimed to create a short, public-domain analogue of the Cross-Cultural (Chinese) Personality Assessment Inventory (CPAI-2; F. M. Cheung et al., 1996). Emic (culture-specific) traits measured by the CPAI-2 are purportedly specific to the Chinese culture and argued to not be fully captured by the consensus Big Five personality trait taxonomy. Research suggests that CPAI-2 traits may have unique predictive power, especially in non-Western contexts. However, research has been hampered by several limitations of the measure. The inventory is proprietary and long, with 341 items forming 28 scales and four factors. Cross-cultural personality research would benefit from …

One Size Does Not Fit All: Understanding Differences In Perceived Organizational Support During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Ruby Daniels, Leslie A. Miller, Michael Zia Mian, Stephanie L. Black
Marketing Faculty Publications (Archived)
The COVID-19 crisis forced organizations to radically rethink how to lead their workforce. Facing an unprecedented drop in consumer demand, business leaders struggled to balance staying financially solvent with the responsibility of supporting their employees during the crisis. Early surveys found many employees did not perceive their organizations communicated a clear plan of action; others questioned whether their employers cared about workers' health and safety. While researchers have examined perceived organizational support, studies are only now starting to examine workers' perceived support during a pandemic. The study used a mixed method design to collect quantitative and qualitative data from 949 …

A Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) is an electronic database that tracks controlled substance prescriptions in a state. PDMPs can provide health authorities timely information about prescribing and patient behaviors that contribute to the epidemic and facilitate an agile and directed response. Electronic Prescribing for Controlled Substances (EPCS) aimed to eliminate paper prescriptions by allowing clinical prescribers to write prescriptions electronically, making them digital and trackable for both the prescriber and the pharmacist and has been an essential part of any health information technology system, as well as a requirement for 'meaningful use' (Blumenthal & Tavenner, 2010). However, one of …

Managerial, Cultural, Intelligence, Marketing Agility, And Firm Innovation, Zhenzhu Lai,
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This dissertation aims to investigate the relationship between managerial cultural intelligence, marketing agility and innovation capability of foreign subsidiaries. Based on upper echelons theory (UET), I argue that managerial cultural intelligence facilitates marketing agility. Moreover, marketing agility is positively associated with innovation capability of foreign subsidiaries. Using two-wave survey data of 110 foreign subsidiaries in China, this study verified the theoretical model. It is found that managerial cultural intelligence is positively associated with marketing agility, and marketing agility is positively related to innovation capability of foreign subsidiaries. Organizational learning climate, market competition, market turbulence, and market complexity have positive moderating …
The Biasing Impact Of Positive Instructor Reputation On Student Evaluations Of Teaching, D. Brian Mcnatt
The Biasing Impact Of Positive Instructor Reputation On Student Evaluations Of Teaching, D. Brian Mcnatt
Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
A naturally-occurring intervention in a longitudinal field setting (4 months) was used to examine the presence and biasing impact of a positive reputation on subsequent ratings of work performance (student evaluations of teaching). During pre-semester interactions, first-year MBA students received information from second-year MBAs about their upcoming professors and classes. Favorable information about the two professors and course examined in the present study caused a positive reputation. Results indicated that despite four months of experiencing actual performance, the positive reputation hindered students’ decision-making process resulting in biasedly inflated ratings of instructor performance and halo error judgments of course materials, grading, …

Penicillin Allergy Assessment And Medical Referral To Promote Antibiotic Stewardship, Elaine Bailey Pharmd, Mackenzie Connell, Marie Fluent Dds, Erinne Kennedy Dds, Mph, Mmsc
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Antibiotic stewardship is an integral practice for the dental team to ensure a safe dental visit for patients. Now, with clinical practice guidelines and state toolkits, more dentists are aware of and actively practicing antibiotic stewardship. With the application of antibiotic stewardship practices, dentists are identifying the need for additional tools to enhance practice. For example, one need that has been identified is a tool for screening patients for true penicillin allergies. The Penicillin Allergy Assessment Tool (PAAT) is a decision-making tool that can be used chairside to screen patients who report an allergy to penicillin. After screening, dentists can …

Dentistry And The Law: Winning Your Case And Still Being Sanctioned, Dan Schulte Jd
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This Dentistry and the Law column discusses a perplexing scenario where a dentist, despite winning a licensing case trial, faces sanctions imposed by the Disciplinary Subcommittee (DSC) of the Board of Dentistry. The article unveils the intricate process of disciplinary actions, from administrative complaints to administrative hearings, emphasizing the pivotal role of the DSC in determining sanctions. It clarifies that success in an administrative hearing doesn't guarantee a favorable outcome, as the DSC holds ultimate authority, subject to limited Court of Appeals review.

Staff Matters: Is Our Practice Required To Mandate Employee Vaccination For Covid-19?, Jodi Schafer Sphr, Shrm-Scp
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This Staff Matters Column addresses the confusion surrounding COVID-19 vaccination mandates for private dental practices. Following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) vaccine mandate was upheld. However, the CMS rule, clarified through FAQs, applies to specific health care facilities accepting Medicare or Medicaid funding and does not include private dental practices. The article navigates the nuances of the CMS rule, emphasizing its impact on certain health care settings rather than private dental practices, offering clarity on vaccination requirements for dental professionals.
10-Minute Ebd: Digital Scans Or Conventional Impressions: Which Results In Better Crowns?, Laura Tsu Dds
10-Minute Ebd: Digital Scans Or Conventional Impressions: Which Results In Better Crowns?, Laura Tsu Dds
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This 10-Minute EBD column critically evaluates the outcomes of digital scans versus conventional impressions in fabricating single-unit crowns, focusing on factors such as marginal and internal fit. Employing a PICO question and a literature search pathway via PubMed, the analysis includes systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Findings suggest that crowns from digital scans generally exhibit clinically acceptable marginal and internal fit, often outperforming conventional impressions. However, heterogeneity in study samples and methodologies contributes to varied results. While digital scans meet the standard of care, ongoing research is essential for a comprehensive understanding of the evolving landscape in digital prosthodontics.
