Research suggests that sustainability may not be sufficient to yield a competitive advantage. Building on the resource-based view, this research evaluates three questions: (1) Can using sustainability as a differentiator lead to consumers choosing sustainable products? (2) Does product sustainability appeal more to environmentally concerned consumers? (3) Does product sustainability appeal more when paired with innovation? To test the hypotheses, an online survey of 344 US respondents was conducted. Consumers were given a hypothetical budget for an office chair and asked to choose between two products at a time. Hypotheses were tested with frequency and Chisquare tests and logistic regression. …

Prescribing Controlled Substances Goes Electronic, Alberto Coustasse, Craig Kimble, Ken Maxik
Management Faculty Research
With the Affordable Care Act in 2010 came interoperability and meaningful use requirements. Part of these requirements included the implementation of electronic medical records (EMRs), which was a crucial part of achieving these standards. With EMRs, prescribers began sending electronic prescriptions. EMRs can provide advanced decision support when writing prescriptions, and they include features such as auto populating the quantity prescribed, formulary information, therapeutic duplications, warnings about interactions, or other potential clinical or regulatory issues. This system results in enhanced patient care and a more streamlined dispensing process. In addition, electronic prescriptions for controlled substances (EPCS) has become more widely …
The Effects Of Network Structure And Social Information On Contribution Performance On Crowdfunding Platforms: An Experimental Investigation, Yanni Hu
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The long-term potentiality of online communities and activities depends critically on contribution behaviors of online individuals. In this dissertation, this study deepen and extend our understanding of contribution behavior by applying contributions to crowdfunding platforms, whereas social networks, social information, and social influence affect people’s contribution decisions, which in turn influences their contribution performances. Specifically, this study looked into how contribution behavior at crowdfunding platforms is shaped at a fundamental level of social interactions initiated by social and information technologies on contribution performance, using online and natural experiments as study methodologies.

10-Minute Ebd: Does Articaine Compared To Lidocaine Result In A Higher Risk Of Paresthesia?, Ben Balevi Dds, Msc
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This Evidence-Based Dentistry column examines whether articaine, when compared to lidocaine, increases the risk of paresthesia in adults undergoing dental block anesthesia. After conducting a comprehensive literature search, the evidence suggests that 4% articaine may enhance the probability of achieving profound block anesthesia, with a very low risk of paresthesia, comparable to other dental local anesthetics. Considering this evidence in conjunction with the patient's preferences and values is crucial when making clinical decisions.
Staff Matters: Should You Create A Combined Pto Bank?, Jodi Schafer Sphr, Shrm-Scp
Staff Matters: Should You Create A Combined Pto Bank?, Jodi Schafer Sphr, Shrm-Scp
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Consider consolidating separate leave banks into a combined Paid Time Off (PTO) system to simplify administration and boost employee flexibility. PTO allows staff to use their leave days for any purpose without providing a reason. While it fosters trust and personal accountability, it may lead to employees saving days for vacations and working while sick. A PTO policy should address availability, employee type, coordination, and communication to encourage PTO utilization, prevent burnout, and enhance work-life balance.

Antecedents Of High Performance Work Practices In Smes: An Attention-Based View, Javier Martínez-Del-Río, Pingshu Li, James P. Guthrie
Management Faculty Publications
Relative to the large body of work in the broader strategic HRM (SHRM) literature, knowledge about determinants of SMEs’ approaches to HRM remains limited. We argue that heterogeneity in the use of high performance work practices (HPWPs) is influenced by top managers’ exposure and attention to information obtained via environmental scanning. Invoking an attention-based view (ABV), we develop hypotheses suggesting that competition tracking, participation in trade associations, and social network embeddedness will be associated with greater use of HPWPs. We also propose direct and moderating roles for top managers’ perceptions of competitive intensity. We test our hypotheses using a database …

Mobile app escape games are excellent tools to create an experiential learning process in online contexts. Through the act of solving puzzles to escape the rooms, students experience a process in which they need to discover new information and clues, adjust their strategies repeatedly, and become more aware of the way they learn. Their emotional and behavioral reactions when they encounter difficulties can shed light on their learning identity and learning flexibility. The experiential learning cycle is complete with the addition of after-game reflection, debrief, and discussion. Escape games are versatile and can be used to teach a variety of …

Dentistry And The Law: Understanding The Dental Plan Audit Process, Dan Schulte Jd
Dentistry And The Law: Understanding The Dental Plan Audit Process, Dan Schulte Jd
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Dental plan audits, which can result in demands for fee repayments, often focus on recordkeeping deficiencies rather than the quality of dental services. Dentists should be aware of key points regarding these audits, including the timing, the nature of audit findings, and the lack of immunity from prior authorizations. Dentists should also request clarification when the audit results are unclear and seek explanations for alleged deficiencies. The audit process may lack a comprehensive explanation, suggesting that the primary goal for dental plans is financial recovery rather than the correction of errors or documentation improvement.

Optimizing Incentives For Systems With Heterogeneous Agents, Chen Chen
Dissertations
This dissertation explores new models and applications based on the game theory of incentives. This exploration starts with controlling an invasive insect problem to address one of the most significant challenges facing our forests, the invasion of the Emerald ash borer (EAB), a non-native, wood-boring insect that threatens to kill most ash trees in North America, through designing two new cost-sharing programs between the landowners and local governments. Ash trees are one of North America’s most widely distributed tree genera and a vital part of the green infrastructure of cities, where they provide residents with numerous social, economic, and ecological …

The majority of individuals in need of mental healthcare fail to seek it, and the diagnosis of those who do is driven predominantly by the patient's subjective self-assessment. There is a need for mental illnesses trackers that measure psychological and physiological symptoms and provide alerts and interpretable data for therapeutic interventions. We present a system that complements existing protocols to detect distress in mental health, passively monitor patients, and quickly alert authorized parties on possible mental health distress. We evaluate modeling a person's mental health from the sensors and activity logs of her/his cell phone using logistic regressions, LSTM, and …
