Breaking Down Barriers: The Impact Of Segregation On Social Capital And Economic Outcomes, Donyetta A. Bennett
Breaking Down Barriers: The Impact Of Segregation On Social Capital And Economic Outcomes, Donyetta A. Bennett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Breaking Down Barriers. Does social capital indirectly affect black/white economic outcomes via entrepreneurial activities? Does the relationship between social capital, entrepreneurship, and black/white economic outcomes change when social capital interacts with segregation? Drawing from Bourdieu's (1986) and Coleman’s (1990) social capital theory and prior scholars' regressive view theories of segregation, I propose that 1) social capital improves entrepreneurial activities and black/white economic outcomes, and 2) segregation’s interaction with social capital has an adverse effect on entrepreneurial activities and black/white economic outcomes. To perform the analysis, data were collected at the county- level from multiple sources and aggregated into one file …

The Strategic Choice Of Sovereign Wealth Funds: The Impact Of Fund Level Heterogeneity On Investment Decisions And Governance, Malak Abdulaziz A Malibari
Management Dissertations - Archive
Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs) have emerged as a new form of state-owned multinational companies (SOMNCs), structured to manage the wealth of countries and promote their economic development. They mainly function as institutional investors, but what drives those investment decisions has yet to be fully understood due to the limited prior research in this area. However, it is increasingly recognized that SWFs are not a homogeneous class of investors. This study draws on multiple theoretical perspectives and argues that the heterogeneity across SWFs leads to different investment and governance choices. Specifically, I examine the impact of the variation in the source …
Emotion-Related Transactive Memory Systems: Theory And Nomological Network, Jigyashu Shukla
Emotion-Related Transactive Memory Systems: Theory And Nomological Network, Jigyashu Shukla
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Transactive memory systems are emergent states in teams that represent the shared knowledge about skills and expertise of the team members which is encoded and stored in the collective memories and is retrieved when required. Traditionally, transactive memory systems literature has focused on encoding, storing, and retrieving only task-related information in teams. Unfortunately, this emphasis on the task-related aspect of transactive memory systems has ignored the potential for transactive memory systems involving emotional knowledge, skills, and expertise in the team. My dissertation explores the emotional side of transactive memory systems and introduces a novel construct: emotion-related transactive memory systems (ETMS). …

Disruption is an inevitable factor in business and society, while inability to mitigate and manage risk can cause irreparable damage to business, the economy, and our ways of life. The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened interest in standards-based strategies for risk management and crisis preparedness to enhance organizational and societal resilience. University curricula that integrate national and international standards offer students a rich skill-set for effective performance in their careers. Moving forward, we must cultivate capable professionals who understand the challenges and risks facing society, and who grasp standards and systems for strategic planning, response, and recovery to promote organizational resilience …

What makes a director independent? Scholars, regulators, and investors have grappled for decades with the fleeting notion of director independence. Originally conceived as guardians of shareholder interests that could safeguard a corporate board’s ability to check management’s power, independent directors have become a marquee feature of modern corporate governance. But do the corporate actions of directors that are considered “independent” under current standards comport with what we think independence requires? In many cases, the answer would seem to be “no.” From a lack of observable financial impact to the unabated flow of corporate scandals, independent directors seem to keep failing …

The Influence Of Marketing Communication Approaches On Student Pilots’ Choices Of Flight Schools, Jingmin Jin
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
As the U.S. domestic commercial aviation activities have been recovering and will continue to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic over the next few years, a trend of the shortage in the regional airline pilot workforce is noted. Therefore, it is crucial to increase the reservoir of pilot candidates to sustain the industry’s pilot occupation rigor. To assist advance flight schools’ recruitment of new pilot candidates, this study examined how various marketing communication approaches influenced student pilots’ selections of flight schools. This study also further investigated how student pilots’ preferences in accessing school information differed in accordance with their different demographic …

Operationalizing A Culture For Successful Lean Transformations: A Framework And Model-Based Tools, Amir Najarzadeh Dr.
Theses and Dissertations--Manufacturing Systems Engineering
Lean manufacturing has been embraced by many companies as a business model to promote operational excellence. However, a high percentage of lean implementation attempts have failed; many organizations have not been able to sustain continuous improvements to achieve lean transformations. This failure is often attributed to the sole focus on the hard-side (tools) of lean, at the expense of the soft side (culture). The majority of research exploring the cultural dimensions of lean either aims to increase awareness about culture or addresses it only in a cursory manner. To bridge this gap this study aims to identify and assess the …

The erasure of marginalized people, especially LGBTQ+ people, is commonplace in sport. As sport has become more commercialized, even at grassroots and youth levels), one group that has become even further marginalized and dehumanized are sports officials. Understanding the intersection of marginalized identities is important; as such, this study examined how homophobia and transphobia interplay with the sports officiating profession. Semistructured interviews with 16 self-identified LGBTQ+ referees revealed a series of organizational and social factors that led officials to either pass as non-LGBTQ+ or to come out as LGBTQ+, leading to the development of the LGBTQ+ Referee Identity Management Process …

Separate, And Not Equal: How The Implicit Links Between Social Class, Race, And Leadership Differentially Impact Evaluations Of Women Leaders, Marla L. White
Business Administration Dissertations - Archive
ABSTRACT: Much research suggests that Whites are more likely to emerge as leaders than Blacks. However, this research has primarily focused on male leaders. Alternatively, an intersectional approach evaluating racial differences in evaluations of women leaders suggests that Black (vs. White) women have more behavioral leeway to express dominant leader-like behaviors, which are generally proscribed for women. Theoretically, more behavioral leeway to enact dominance should enhance Black women’s chances of progressing to senior leadership, but this is inconsistent with demographic patterns of leadership representation in America’s workforce. Black women’s representation lags far behind White women’s, suggesting that Black women experience …

Well-Being From Home To Work: The Role Of Mindfulness, Alisha Gupta
Well-Being From Home To Work: The Role Of Mindfulness, Alisha Gupta
Theses and Dissertations
Considering the growing spillover of work and home and its impact on well-being, I draw from the Work-Home Resources Model and Attention Restoration Theory to examine the effects of evening recovery experiences at home on mindfulness at work and eudaimonic workplace well-being. Specifically, I focus on two indicators of eudaimonic well-being—one indicator of psychological functioning (work meaningfulness) and one indicator of social functioning (high-quality connections; HQCs). Further, I introduce a boundary condition, distance from work, of the relationship between evening recovery experiences and mindfulness. I suggest that due to alternative work arrangements in today’s workforce (i.e., that permit increased overlap …

Bullion
This study examined the mediating role of trustworthiness (ability, integrity, and benevolence) on the effective performance appraisal (EPA)-employee engagement relationship in deposit money banks in Nigeria. A survey was conducted as a sample of 149 of the deposit money bank employees, and a Hayes' three-way parallel mediation was used in testing the study hypotheses. We found that EPA significantly influences (positive) employee engagement and that integrity and benevolence significantly mediate the relationship between EPA and employee engagement, whereas ability does not mediate this relationship. These findings have implications for policymakers and managers of deposit money banks in Nigeria.

Business Administration
In this paper, we introduced the concept of socially responsible human resource management (SR-HRM) and examined the effects of perceived SR-HRM on Sustainable development (SD), a particular area of research that has developed and grown significantly over the past few years, adding to the expanding academic discussion on what is known as "socially responsible human resource management" (SR-HRM) and how it relates to sustainable development. In order to promote sustainable development, the SRHRM discussion aims to proactively improve workers' work experiences and satisfy their social and personal expectations. However, there is no connection between SR-HRM and its impact on SD …

Expanding The Dimensionality Of Team Deviance: An Organizing Framework And Review, Trevor Spoelma, Tamanna Chauhan
Faculty and Staff Publications
Although team deviance is known to detract from team functioning, extant literature largely focuses on deviance that is independently enacted and directed internally toward other members. This relatively narrow focus poses limitations to the practical application of strategies to reduce the incidence and negative impact of team deviance. We offer a four-dimensional typology that takes into account features of team deviance that are important yet undertheorized: level of coordination and target membership. We use this typology to summarize current research, highlight the narratives on team deviance that underlie each dimension, and discuss how to advance the research domain.

Maintenance can improve a system’s reliability in a long operation period or when a component has failed. The reliability modeling method that uses the stochastic process degradation model to describe the system degradation process has been widely used. However, the existing reliability models established using stochastic processes only consider the internal degradation process, and do not fully consider the impact of external random shocks on their reliability modeling. Furthermore, the existing theory of importance does not consider the actual factors of maintenance cost. In this paper, based on the reliability modeling of random processes, the degradation rate under the influence …

Effects Of Burnout Amongst Primary Care Providers, Summer Payne
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
INTRODUCTION: Physician burnout within the United States has been deemed an epidemic within the healthcare system with nearly 63% of physicians reporting burnout. The rate of burnout amongst Primary Care Providers (PCPs) is higher than other provider types at 70%. The presence of burnout affects the likelihood of medical errors, provider retention, and patient-provider communication. Fifty-six percent of PCPs that reported burnout also associated this burnout with their reason for leaving the practice. Physicians that are burnt out are less likely to find nonadherence in their patients, more likely to refer to specialists, and more likely to prescribe medications unnecessary. …

Assessment Of Founders In Venture Capital Investment Decisions, Gregory Gerald Hennessy
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This manuscript documents a research project that employs grounded theory to determine what criteria contemporary investors in early-stage startups use to assess founders. One of the first questions posed by entrepreneurship researchers - even before entrepreneurship had formalized as a field - was, what criteria do investors consider when making investments in startups? Initially, the central concern was whether it was the founder(s) or the business model, often characterized as the “jockey” or the “horse.” From the start, it was generally accepted that the founder was the primary consideration, especially in early-stage ventures. Nonetheless, while business model considerations were parsed …

Whether an experience is perceived as ordinary or extraordinary (i.e., memorable, meaningful, transformational) (Duerden et al., 2018) depends on a variety of potential factors including but not limited to time, social connection, and reflection. The purpose of this experimental study was to assess how activity type, social connection, and reflection type influences exper ience type, ordinary versus extraordinary, perceptions overtime. Data was collected from 209 undergraduates using a 4x4 experimental design. Participants engaged in one of four different 20-minute activities based upon Melton's (2017) family activity model (e.g., core:parallel, core:joint, balance:parallel, and balance:joint). Each activity was run for four different …

A large body of literature explores the role of context, structure, actors, and outcomes of open innovation (OI), yet pays little attention to the mechanisms underlying these relationships. In this review paper, we synthesize the OI literature using a context-mechanism-outcome approach to identify and classify the various mechanisms observed in empirical OI studies. Our findings demonstrate that the OI literature draws on a wide variety of mechanisms originating from the fields of management, sociology, economics, and psychology. The fifteen mechanisms most frequently observed in the literature fall into four categories: governance and policies; environmental dynamics and interactions; knowledge, skills, and …
