A Natural Gas Purchasing And Storage Model Under Uncertainty In Demand, Reuven R. Levary, Burton V. Dean
A Natural Gas Purchasing And Storage Model Under Uncertainty In Demand, Reuven R. Levary, Burton V. Dean
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
Storage and purchasing policies that minimize expected shortages of natural gas in the service area supplied by a single natural gas utility are developed. The problem is formulated and solved using a multi-period linear programming model. The model takes into consideration the variability of weather conditions and its effect on the demand for natural gas. Forecasts of future weather conditions are updated several times during the model planning periods; also, the optimal flows of natural gas are determined at the time that the forecasts are updated. The optimal storage quantities at the beginning of each time period and the consequences …

Toward A Definition Of Organizational Politics, Bronston T. Mayes, Robert W. Allen
Toward A Definition Of Organizational Politics, Bronston T. Mayes, Robert W. Allen
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Viewing organizations as political entities is not a recent phenomenon. March (7) suggested that organizations are political coalitions in which decisions are made and goals are set by bargaining processes. Other writers stressed the utility of taking a political perspective when studying organizations (1, 6, 9, 22). Anyone associated with almost any form of organization eventually becomes aware of activities that are described by employees as "political", but what is termed political by one observer may not be viewed as political by another. To understand the nature of political processes in organizations, some agreement as to what constitutes political behavior …

Dental Management Game Administrator's Manual, Arnold Reisman, Hamilton Emmons, Susumu Morito, Juan Rivaud, Edward J. Green
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
This paper discusses progress on the development of a computer aided game to teach various management skills to dental students as well as to dental practitioners. The game first deals with the decisions concerning the establishment of a practice, e. g., preferences regarding location, the form (solo, associate or group) of practice, staff patterns and salaries, purchasing of facilities, etc. Next considered are decisions which must be made daily, e. g., patient and worker scheduling, control of supplies, etc. Performance is evaluated in terms of income, costs, care delivered, patient waiting time and personnel utilization.

Planning A Dental Practice With A Management Game, Arnold Reisman, Hamilton Emmons, Susumu Morito, Juan Rivaud, Edward J. Green
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
This paper describes how a dentist can use a new management tool, a computerized dental practice management game, to plan his or her own practice. After reviewing factors to be considered in planning a dental practice, we briefly describe the game with special emphasis on what it can and cannot do. After identifying the information required to make such an exercise useful in planning a specific practice, an example is given which shows how the game can be so used.

Research Reports from the Department of Operations
This study examines the implementation and evaluation of the Cleveland Telemedicine Project, an initiative designed to address the maldistribution of medical personnel between University Hospitals of Case Western Reserve University (UH) and nearby hospitals, including Forest City Hospital (FCH), a small community hospital in Cleveland’s inner city. Through electronic communication links, Telemedicine facilitated specialist consultations between UH and FCH, enhancing healthcare delivery where travel or specialist availability was limited. The project involved collaboration between medical, administrative, and engineering personnel, and the system was continuously evaluated. The Operations Research team conducted a systems approach evaluation, focusing on input, process, and output …
Ecuador And A Business Opportunity, Cesar Arturo Paredes Roldan
Ecuador And A Business Opportunity, Cesar Arturo Paredes Roldan
Theses
As a result of its recent status as a petroleum exporting country, Ecuador is enjoying an economic boom, which is expected to lead to the formation of new enterprises, the creation of jobs, the utilization of human and natural resources and the encouragement of harmonious development of the national economy.
This thesis is based on the belief that the private sector must assume a decisive role in the adequate implementation of Ecuador's industrial development programs, and it aims to show the feasibility of establishing there an enterprise that would manufacture domestic electric irons.
The coverage of the subject comprises three …
An Approach To Energy Conservation In A Manufacturing Industry, William Polignano
An Approach To Energy Conservation In A Manufacturing Industry, William Polignano
Theses
The approach attacks the problem of control and planning of energy usage via three major categories. These areas are: detection, forecasting and reporting of energy usage.
To initiate any energy program the first step, is the identification of the areas that use the most energy, thus allowing detailed studies to be concentrated in these energy-intensive areas. The author has attempted to show which areas are energy-intensive in his employer's plants.
The second step is the accurate forecasting of energy usage. The author has attempted this via an econometric forecasting model that accurately predicts energy usage based on direct labor hours …

Generalized Isotone Optimization With Applications To Starshaped Functions, Vasant A. Ubhaya
Generalized Isotone Optimization With Applications To Starshaped Functions, Vasant A. Ubhaya
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
This article considers a smoothing or data fitting problem involving minimization of the distance from a function f to a convex cone of functions. A weighted uniform norm is considered as a measure of the distance. The domain of functions is a partially ordered set, and the convex cone is defined by isotonicity and nonnegativity conditions on functions. The problem has a linear programming formulation, however, explicit expressions for optimal solutions have been obtained directly, thereby eliminating the necessity of using linear programming techniques. The results are applied to approximation by starshaped functions.

A General Contingency Theory Of Management, Fred Luthans, Todd I. Stewart
A General Contingency Theory Of Management, Fred Luthans, Todd I. Stewart
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Recent formal recognition of situational influences on the management of complex organizations has led to an increasing number of contingency models, but a comprehensive and integrative theoretical framework for contingency management has been lacking. A General Contingency Theory (GCT) of Management is introduced as an overall framework that integrates the diverse process, quantitative and behavioral approaches to management; incorporates the environment; and begins to bridge the gap between management theory and practice
