Theories Of Management: A Manual For Managers, Terrie Hearns Schwerdtfeger
Theories Of Management: A Manual For Managers, Terrie Hearns Schwerdtfeger
Theses
Terrie Hearns Schwerdtfeger’s thesis, Theories of Management: A Manual for Managers, serves as a practical guide aimed primarily at preparing individuals for roles in middle management, especially within healthcare institutions. The manual is structured around three central areas: managing oneself, managing subordinates, and managing the organization. Schwerdtfeger argues that successful management depends on mastering all three, as they are interrelated and in constant flux due to evolving business and societal demands. Drawing from both classical and contemporary theories, including those of Taylor, Herzberg, Vroom, and Maslow, the work addresses core concepts such as motivation, job enrichment, decision-making, organizational communication, …

The Transfer Of Japanese Manufacturing Management Approaches To U. S. Industry, Richard J. Schonberger
The Transfer Of Japanese Manufacturing Management Approaches To U. S. Industry, Richard J. Schonberger
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Just-in-time (JIT) provisioning of manufacturing inventories is a notable feature of Japanese manufacturing management. Kawasaki Motors, USA, has committed itself to JIT objectives, which result in moving toward lotless repetitive manufacturing, a streamlined mode of operation characterized by minimal inventories and "shop paper," plus flexible market response. Kawasaki USA has forged a hybrid process of effecting change, featuring Japanese JIT objectives but without Japanese-style consensus mechanisms for making decisions and effecting changes
An Idiographic Approach To Organizational Behavior Research: The Use Of Single Case Experimental Designs And Direct Measures, Fred Luthans, Tim R.V. Davis
An Idiographic Approach To Organizational Behavior Research: The Use Of Single Case Experimental Designs And Direct Measures, Fred Luthans, Tim R.V. Davis
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
The underlying assumptions of the dominant nomothetic (group-centered, standardized, and controlled environmental contexts, and quantitative methodologies) and idiographic (individual-centered, naturalistic environmental contexts, and qualitative methodologies) research perspectives are examined. An interactive theoretic (i.e., real people interacting in real organizations) for organizational behavior is suggested-a theoretic assumption that lends itself to an idiographic approach. Intensive single- case experimental designs and direct observational measures are proposed as a potentially powerful methodology for idiographic research of organizational behavior.
A Management Science Approach To Contingency Models Of Organizational Structure, Sang M. Lee, Fred Luthans, David L. Olson
A Management Science Approach To Contingency Models Of Organizational Structure, Sang M. Lee, Fred Luthans, David L. Olson
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
This study demonstrates the applicability of a quantitative modeling approach, specifically goal programming, in operationalizing the relationship between environmental variables and specific organizational structural variables for optimal goal attainment. A goal programming model is developed to analyze and determine the optimal relationships for goal attainment.
The contingency approach has emerged in recent years as the dominant theoretical framework for viewing organizational structure and design. Although open systems analysis (Katz & Kahn, 1966) emphasized the input of the external environment into organization structuring, the contingency approach attempts to establish functional relationships between environmental variables and organizational variables. Over the past decade …
A Critique Of Linear And Nonlinear Regression Problems With Four Different Minimization Criteria, Radhakrishna Murty Gajjala
A Critique Of Linear And Nonlinear Regression Problems With Four Different Minimization Criteria, Radhakrishna Murty Gajjala
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
The multiple regression problem is analyzed by the model type (linear and nonlinear models) and four different minimization criteria, viz., minimization of the sum of squared errors, sum of absolute errors, sum of absolute relative errors and sum of squared relative errors. The advantages and the limitations of the eight alternatives (two model types x four minimization criteria) are discussed. The appropriateness of these alternatives for a sample data is analyzed. Methods of estimating the parameters for four of the alternatives (not covered in the literature) are given. For the linear model, the properties of the least sum of squared …

Ord River Irrigation Area Of Western Australia, Western Australian Department Of Agriculture
Ord River Irrigation Area Of Western Australia, Western Australian Department Of Agriculture
Farm Systems and Economics published reports
The Ord Irrigation Project is located in the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley in the far north of the State of Western Australia.
The potential for harnessing northern rivers was realised many years ago. In 1941, a small experimental farm was established on the Ord, and possible dam sites were investigated upstream.
In 1945, this small experimental farm was relocated and the Kimberley Research Station was established on Ivanhoe Plain, part of the 12,000 hectare area now irrigated from Lake Kununurra above the Diversion Dam.
By 1958, the Western Australian Government was convinced of the viability of an irrigation scheme on …
A Study Of The Relationship Between Outpatient Queue Length And Number Of Providers, Diane Lurie Sachs
A Study Of The Relationship Between Outpatient Queue Length And Number Of Providers, Diane Lurie Sachs
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
This paper describes the development and implementation of an index of accessibility for ambulatory health care. The index, used at Kaiser-Permanente facilities in Cleveland, measures factors such as time spent making appointments, waiting in queues for appointments, and waiting for lab or x-ray tests. Data was collected through direct observation and telephone traffic systems, with appointment availability monitored monthly. The paper proposes a simplified model designed to integrate with existing data collection systems, enabling predictions of changes in accessibility due to shifts in personnel configurations or system usage. This model aims to enhance efficiency in ambulatory health care services.

Interpretive Structural Modeling And Its Applications, M. Venkatesan
Interpretive Structural Modeling And Its Applications, M. Venkatesan
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
The purpose of this paper is to introduce managers and management scientists to a recently developed tool for modeling complex systems. Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) is a technique for aiding people think and communicate effectively about complex systems. The elements or variables of a complex system can usually be identified with sufficient clarity, but the relationships among the elements can seldom be clearly stated. The ISM technique assumes transitivity of the inter-relationships and uses a group-consensus process for developing subjective pair-wise relations and uses a computer for storing and processing the subjective information using simple logical operations. A binary matrix …

A User's Guide For Software To Obtain The Largest Im-Free Subset From A Set Of Frequencies (Dual Code), Harvey M. Salkin, Kamlesh Mathur, Koichi Nishimura
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
This report presents operating instructions for the interactive computer program FREE4, designed to identify the largest intermodulation-free subset of a given set of frequency values. The program ensures that the subset satisfies a specified lowest permissible order of intermodulation and accounts for additional constraints, including frequency separation, guard bands, and the number of concurrent threats. A frequency set is deemed intermodulation-free if no subset combination produces intermodulation interference. Mathematically, this involves satisfying constraints on guard bands and intermodulation order.

Control Of Construction Costs During Construction, David H. Foo
Control Of Construction Costs During Construction, David H. Foo
Theses
The construction of a major project requires a vast amount of time, money, material and human resources. Proper coordination of these elements into an array of activities is crutial to the success of the project if it is to be built on time and within budget. As technology advances, the complexity of the project increases the resources to build them remain finite, and therefore, the project manager must seek methods to improve control on the construction project.
This thesis provides an overall view of the relatively new and rapidly expanding field of cost engineering. Cost engineering may be defined as …
Use Of Numerical Optimization Methods And Interactive Simulation To Improve The Operation Of Transfer Lines, Sven Charles Milenbachs
Use Of Numerical Optimization Methods And Interactive Simulation To Improve The Operation Of Transfer Lines, Sven Charles Milenbachs
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
A set of FORTRAN computer programs is presented for the simulation of a special class of manufacturing subsystems known as "transfer lines": a serial arrangement of machines that sequentially process parts and include temporary storage buffers between machines. Parts movement through the line is modeled as a flow between adjacent buffers, which is temporarily interrupted by machine shutdowns and buffer capacity constraints. This approach makes program execution time proportional to the number of flow interruptions rather than the number of parts processed. Implementations of the Nelder-Mead, Hooke-Jeeves, and Rosenbrock multivariable search algorithms are interfaced with the simulation capability. Several example …
