Performance Issues In U.S.–China Joint Ventures, Gregory E. Osland, S. Tamer Cavugsil
Scholarship and Professional Work - Business
Based on an in-depth study of U.S.-China joint ventures, this article offers some insights into the performance of such international business relationships. While the conventional literature treats government as an amorphous aspea of the political-legal environment, in this case government is an active participant and influence in the performance of international joint ventures (UVs). It has both a constraining and enabling effect on LJV structure, strategy, and performance. For example, limits can be placed on ownership shares of joint ventures and on prices of the output. At the same time, government can cooperate with LJVs and foreign parent companies by …

Nursing Home Management Of The Certified Nurse's Aide: Voluntary Job Turnover, Job Satisfaction, And An Overview Of Industry Challenges With Proven Solutions, Kevin G. Sullivan
Nursing Home Management Of The Certified Nurse's Aide: Voluntary Job Turnover, Job Satisfaction, And An Overview Of Industry Challenges With Proven Solutions, Kevin G. Sullivan
Theses
This thesis will focus on the issues surrounding the voluntary turnover rate of the certified nurse's aide population. Research has attributed the high turnover rate to numerous factors such as inadequate monetary compensation, lack of job satisfaction, difficulty in being promoted, inattention of management to the relevant issues, and the failure of management to use proven solutions utilized by other non- health care businesses in attracting and retaining qualified and desirable employees.
With annual turnover rates of the certified nurse's aide population estimated in the 100% to 300% range, the magnitude of the problem cannot be disputed. However, with the …

Outsourcing In Western Australian Hospitals: Management Considerations, Geraldine M. Martin
Outsourcing In Western Australian Hospitals: Management Considerations, Geraldine M. Martin
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis examines Health Care Managers' considerations with and experiences of outsourcing services in Western Australian hospitals. Support services such as cleaning and maintenance are some of the areas which have been targeted for outsourcing (contracting out) by the state government. These services have traditionally been delivered by permanently employed staff either on a full or part- time basis, usually with active union involvement. Core services such as nursing and medical care which involve direct patient care delivery are not included in the outsourcing debate. Firstly, this thesis reviews the literature on outsourcing and its application to the health care …
Managing And Partnering With External Stakeholders, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Caron H. St. John
Managing And Partnering With External Stakeholders, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Caron H. St. John
Management Faculty Publications
The weakening of the traditional management hierarchy, the hollowing out of corporations, and an increasing management emphasis on boundarylessness have created a new mind set concerning external stakeholders. Increasingly, organizations are moving beyond traditional stakeholder management techniques to partnering tactics that lead to the achievement of common goals. In spite of these trends, there has been very little effort in the management literature to tie stakeholder management and partnering tactics. This article demonstrates how successful partnerships with stakeholders create such valued benefits as increased product success rates, increased manufacturing efficiency, the development of distinctive competencies arising from partnerships with local …
Effects Of International Diversity And Product Diversity On The Performance Of Multinational Firms, Stephen Tallman, Jiatao Li
Effects Of International Diversity And Product Diversity On The Performance Of Multinational Firms, Stephen Tallman, Jiatao Li
Management Faculty Publications
A study examined the relationships among international diversity, product diversity, and firm performance. For a sample of large American industrial multinational enterprises (MNE), it showed a consistent quadratic relationship between product diversification and MNE performance but minimal performance differences across different measures of international diversity. Analysis of the interactions of international diversity and product diversity indicates a weak effect from increasing internationalization on the performance effect of product diversity.
The Effects Of Environment Dynamism And Heterogeneity On Salespeople's Role Perceptions, Performance And Job Satisfaction, Ravipreet S. Sohi
The Effects Of Environment Dynamism And Heterogeneity On Salespeople's Role Perceptions, Performance And Job Satisfaction, Ravipreet S. Sohi
Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications
This article develops a structural equations model which examines the effects of environmental dynamism and heterogeneity on salespeople’s role conflict, role ambiguity, performance and job satisfaction. The model is tested with EQS, using data collected from 230 salespeople in multiple companies and industries. Indicates that environmental dynamism reduces satisfaction and performance, and increases role conflict and ambiguity. Notes that environmental heterogeneity also reduces performance and increases role conflict, but does not have a significant effect on role ambiguity.
Fund-Raising Systems In Children's Museums: An Analysis Of Fund-Raising Behavior And Philanthropic Income Trends, Elizabeth A. Potter
Fund-Raising Systems In Children's Museums: An Analysis Of Fund-Raising Behavior And Philanthropic Income Trends, Elizabeth A. Potter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem under investigation. This dissertation analyzed philanthropic donations and fund-raising behavior in children's museums. The research embodies a descriptive, inductive, and deductive study which infers that philanthropic donations increase gradually and are influenced by an organization's fund-raising behavior.
The subjects. A stratified random sample of 15 small, 47 medium, and 20 large U.S. children's museums were surveyed; operating budgets determined museum size.
The methodology. Time-series statistical techniques and economic data measures calculated the change in children's museum philanthropic donations from 1990-1994. Correlation coefficients determined the relationships between the income variables. The fund-raising behavior variables, nominal data, were calculated in …

[Introduction To] Transnational Marriages In The Steel Industry: Experience And Lessons For Global Business, Kim Sae-Young, Garth L. Mangum, Stephen Tallman
[Introduction To] Transnational Marriages In The Steel Industry: Experience And Lessons For Global Business, Kim Sae-Young, Garth L. Mangum, Stephen Tallman
Bookshelf
Drawing upon case studies of firms in the steel industry, the authors show that companies competing internationally can pool their strengths to offset their individual weaknesses, enabling them to build economically successful entities more easily than if each company tried to go it alone in competition with rivals. In doing so they show how the world steel industry emerged into a group of international joint ventures and how in each of these transnational marriages the whole became greater than the sum of its parts. Among the authors' main points are: cultural conflicts are minimized by economic success but magnified by …

A Study Of How Women Are Perceived In The Workforce, Christopher Roberts
A Study Of How Women Are Perceived In The Workforce, Christopher Roberts
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Women are defined as a minority in the United States. This is not because there are fewer women than men in our country but because they have traditionally held less power and earned salaries 39% lower than the average male's income (Conrad, 1994). although the gap in pay is decreasing, it illustrates the different expectations our culture places on men and women. Whether we embrace the idea or reject it, men and women also behave differently. Researchers argue that these differing behavioral patterns are either genetic or learned. This paper explores communication differences in an organizational setting. More specifically, it …

Job Competencies, Career Paths, And Educational Backgrounds Of "Fortune" 500 Training Directors, Rachael A. Shultz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the job competencies, career paths, and educational backgrounds of training directors and also compared the responses of male and female training directors in an attempt to identify possible sources of justification for reported male/female salary differences. Data for the study were gathered through the use of two questionnaires. The first was based on a part of the American Society for Training and Development's (ASTD) 1987-1989 Competency and Standards Study. Additionally, a demographic questionnaire dealing with biographical, educational, and professional characteristics was self-developed. Both were mailed to training directors in all Fortune 500 companies. Major findings include: (1) …

The Soul Of The Firm (Phoenix), C. William Pollard
The Soul Of The Firm (Phoenix), C. William Pollard
C. William Pollard Papers
Delivered at the Activating Your Firm's Service Culture Symposium (Phoenix), this speech outlines Pollard's theory of the corporate soul, which is most clearly defined as the people who make up the organization. According to Pollard, proper recognition of the firm's soul requires a certain kind of leadership, one defined by both service and sacrifice.

Communication Flows In Distribution Channels: Impact On Assessments Of Communication Quality And Satisfaction, Jakki J. Mohr, Ravipreet S. Sohi
Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications
We develop and test a model of the relationships between: (1) norms of information sharing and communication flows of frequency, bidirectionality, and formality, (2) these communication flows and dealers’ assessments of the quality of communication and satisfaction with communication; and (3) formality of communication flows and dealers’ distortion and withholding of information. Based on data collected with a survey mailed to a national sample of computer dealers, our findings offer insight on channels communication to both researchers and practitioners. By examining the impact of communication flows on summary judgments of communication, managers can focus their efforts on vital communication flows …

Servant Leadership - A Look At Values In The Marketplace, C. William Pollard
C. William Pollard Papers
In this speech to the members of the German-American Chamber of Commerce (Hotel Intercontinental - Chicago), Pollard reflects upon the uncertain economic and socio-political climate of the mid-1990s. He posits that institutions might move forward despite such uncertainty if only their leaders understand themselves as servants charged with the holistic well-being of the organization's employees.
